I initially thought M6, off at Penrith, up to the A69 and straight in to Newcastle.

RAC routeplanner has me off at Tebay (one junction earlier than Penrith), across to just south of Darlington and then up the A1(M) via Durham and Chester-Le-Street.

Which is the quickest?

For me, Tebay then across to Brough and Scotch Corner and up the M1 is quicker. It can save you up to 30 minutes, if there are no lorries on the single track bit of the journey.....plus it's a nicer drive.

I'm going Scotch Corner way. Then parking at Newcastle Metro Centre (free parking), and then getting a Train from there for £2 to Newcastle Central for a few pints somewhere around there.

the A69 is the better route as there is loads of roadworks on the A1

parking at the metrocentre

good luck finding a space on a saturday

My choice in bold. Looks about 10 mins longer (using AA) but seems much easier to me, and its the route I've done previously and it was fine. I also hate the A1 so personally I would avoid it if possible.

In the past i'd say it was easy to get away without paying on that train (i park there and get the train in and out but have a magpie mover pass with my ST so don't have to pay) as it's often too packed for the conductor to get up the train and take pay for tickets but they've installed barriers at Newcastle Central now to stop it.

Alternative to the A66 Scotch Corner Route is to head towards Burnley on the M65 and join the A59 and join the A1 north of Harrogate.

Both quicker and shorter than going to Carlisle and then A69

A66 would be the best normally without question. However, 1 - it goes pretty high and gets shut in snow quite easily (and the forecast aint the best) and 2 - by the sounds of it the A1 is a pain in the arse at the moment mean that another way might be better. If you go A69 the A19 offers an alternative to the A1 and is usually virtually empty although you have to pass middlesbrough which is a miserable place and end up coming into newcastle by bit of an awkward route.

Best not to bother as apparently we're going to get stuffed anyway.....

Mate, follow your original plan-M6/ A69-but allow yourself the luxury of another 45 mins..

Very easy to get landed by some shitty beige coloured caravan and there are only about 3 safe places to overtake on the entire road.

Nice views across Northumberland, though...

Enjoy the game!

This is the route I have used in the past, and I'd use it again. Giving the game a miss this time, though. 😱

Theres a nice pub in Scotch Corner called The Shoulder Of Mutton. We used to call in when going to matches in NE.

One night coming back from Darlo the landlady put us some sandwiches on to keep us boozing. Got home about 3.00AM!!!

m6 to tebay then a class road through gaisgill, kirby stephen and join the a66 at brough. the a69 is a terrible road[like the old way to balackpool without the m55. tghe old way to bpool is a nice quiet road. the a69 is not. even with roadworks on the a1 the a69 is still crap. avoid barnard castle][stayon the a66] some disgusting dogs.
