Letter to Scunthorpe

Letter to Scunthorpe

Why? Because I am not jumping on the lets get at Scunthorpe band wagon?

I call it as I see it. PNE fans criticising one club, but not a word against our own club who did precisely what the first club did, ie had to postpone a game due to frozen pitch.

If any letters need to be written to the authorities, I suggest we leave that to the referee.

Also this postponement in my opinion can only help North End, who by the time this game will be played may have a significantly stronger team if other players including the Blackburn guy who is injured may be available for the rescheduled game v Scunthorpe.

The phrase "making a mountain out of a molehill" springs to mind.

The phrase 'What a fucking Albertan' springs to mind.

I dont disagree but your comparison is a little on the illogical side.

At the end of the day the ref called the game off, it happens.

Now I am confused. Are you agreeing or disagreeing with me?

Of course the ref called the game off.........so why blame Scunthorpe for something (ie the weather) that is out of their control?

Hence, no need for silly letters...........agreed?

If someone wants to write a silly letter then it is, of course, their right to do so. So I guess that means I dont agree with you.

Every credit to you for writing a letter, there's no harm doing so. I am not big into conspiracy theories but there is certainly something fishy about what went on yesterday, and if you choose not to buy into it then thats up to you.

I find it hard to understand that Lincoln, Rotherham and lower league games in and around Scunthorpe managed to take place, yet Championship side Scunthorpe United couldn't get their game on.

The amount of key players they had out for what could be the most crucial game of their season, suggests that they didn't want the game to take place.

There was an incident going back to Brian Clough's days at Derby, he went into the Baseball Ground and watered the pitch with a giant hose, he then sat in the stand and fell asleep and when he woke up the pitch was pretty much waterlogged. The chairman of the the opposing foreign side couldn't understand it as he said he hadn't seen any sign of rain in Derby. Derby went on to win.

Who is to say Scunny didn't water the pitch, knowing that the temperatures were around freezing. Who knows what time the pitch was actually covered.

I don't think they made every effort to get the game on and I can't blame them. The only plus point I can see from our point of view is that we have been given a bit of extra time to further bolster our squad. Only time will tell if its really affected us, when we come to play them.

So PNE chose not to spend 5-10K on preventive measures (like laying on a huge tarpaulin and an inch of straw) to rescue a youth team game which would generate revenue of about 2K

Scunthorpe chose not to spend that money to rescue a high profile Championship match, which had customers having spent two hundred grand....

Yes... these really are equivalent.

The phrase 'making a molehill out of a mountain' comes to mind. i think you're just being argumentative.

I don't know about the conspiracy theories. I must say that it did cross my mind.... but I was one that got all the way to Glanford Park (despite listening to Radio Humberside for half an hour before getting there)

I cannot believe the game was called off. Honestly, when the old fella greeted me at the ground and told me the match had been cancelled, I asked him if there'd been some sort of accident. In my mind, I assumed that some sort of tragedy had happened, and the match had been called off on compassionate grounds.

It had been cold overnight, but it was +3.5C in the afternoon... and it's not like we'd had days of sub-zero temperatures. Surely any groundsman (with a brain) who saw the weather forecast the day before and wanted that game to go ahead, would have achieved it.

Unfortunately, the OP's letter is too long to get read. But I do think that people should complain - either on the conspiracy theory grounds, or the awful couldn't-care-less-about-the-customer attitude taken by Scunthorpe.

According to this post on the Scunthorpe forum, it's our fault it was off!

The postponement - THE TRUTH ...

I am going to attempt to clear up all the conspiracy therioes with the TRUTH about yesterday.

Steve Wharton was absolutely fuming with the game being called off and by 2.00pm the pitch was playable.

It was the referee's first ever game at this level and he was pressured from Preston and not the Iron to have the game called off. The Preston kit man was the only one from their club present at the inspection and he was quickly on the phone to Phil Brown telling him not to bother coming to the ground as the game wasn't going to be on. Scunny officials wanted both managers to come to see the pitch but the preston kit man was adament that Phil Brown wasn't to travel from the hotel, which, incidentally was in Leeds and not Forest Pines. With the referee being inexperienced at this level he spent at least 20 minutes on the phone to FA officials getting advise on what to do.

The referee made a bad call and with experience would have no doubt gave it more time.

Believe me, the figures I have been told this morning that we stand to lose from just the 2 postponements against PNE are ridiculous and after hearing these there is no way in the world that the club wanted this game called off.

It is worth remebering that this fixture was origianlly scheduled to be played Boxing Day when a crowd of around 6500 was fully expected and PNE had sold over 1000 tickets. Yesterday only 4500 were expected and they had only sold 500 tickets with a maximum of 200 expected to travel on the day. Now the game will have to be played midweek and even less people will be in attendance. The club, Mr Wharton has lost money and is not happy.

I along with the rest of you was embarrassed about yesterday and still believe the club could have done more to protect the pitch in the first instance but believe me, they wanted the game to go ahead and these people stating otherwise are completely and utterly wrong.

UP THE IRON!

He forgets that staying in the Championship is worth a couple of million...

To be fair they did call in the referee in the morning and called it off at 12pm.

Had it been called off much later then yes i'd agree that they could be accused as having a couldn't care less attitude towards PNE supporters.

And I think you are holding a football club responsible for uncontrollable effects on a pitch caused by weather conditions.

Anyone would think this is the first time in UK that a football game has been cancelled due to a frozen pitch.

You sound like a barrel of laughs.

Fuck me, another one.

This board has become infested with old people.

I now concur with the majority on this forum that you are a complete unducated foul mouthed moron. Furthermore should you really possess the ability to tell someones age from a few typed words, you should be on a stage-preferrably a scaffold.

If i am older than you, have you never heard the phrase "older & wiser" ? Then again most school kids are probably mentally older & wiser than you and hopefully less foul mouthed.

It is illiterate foul mouthed underclass like you that infest this forum.
