He's actually sticking up for us a bit on this show and seems like he genuinely wants us to stay up.

He also mentioned the Carlo Nash incidient, saying he was unsettled by agents spreading rumours and then threw a tantrum in training demanding a transfer. He also pretty much said that's what messed up our season that year after being top in November.

Toss manager mind.

How can anybody who signed Michael 'Ricko' Ricketts be liked by anyone?

Losing Nash was key that season, but Simpson's insistance on playing / fitting 'Ricko' into his team cost us. Said signing that useless piece of space would undo us at the time, and I was proved right.

Do one Simpson.

He's not exactly going to criticise us on national TV is he being jobless and failing @ shrewsbury and stockport.

What does that tell everyone about him?!

He hasn't got a leg to stand on and his next club should be no higher than BSP North/South!!

Well said that man.

A twat of the highest.

Simpson was undone by certain prima donnas, Nash being the prime one, unsettling things and derailing our season. He took over at an unenviable time, when Davies and his gang had left him/us in the mire and showed commendable dignity and fortitude. He even shook Davies' hand when we played Derby-I couldn't have! Nash treated PNE like dirt-and yet there are those who would still have the mercenary back. Simpson should have been stronger in the face of the 'bad apples', no doubt, but he was still relatively young and inexperienced (like Ferguson) and will probably have learned from the experience. As for Ricketts, he no doubt thought he could be the one to get a player of obvious ability to finally turn the corner and start performing again-as I'm sure Brown does with Ellington. Some you win, most you lose ;-)

Sometimes there is a fine line between success and failure and had Simpson received the backing he should have had in the January window, he could quite easily have taken us to the promised land.

Instead, he was given no investment and had to take a gamble on the likes of Ricketts, Soley and Pergl.

Other Managers have received more backing than Simpson did.

At the time he brought in Ricketts & co, his hands were pretty much tied, much as Brown's are now and it was a case of getting in what he could. Unfortunately, he did earlier saddle us with Carter and Nicholls, both of whom seemed good signings initially. On the other hand, he brought in St Ledger, whose eventual sale should more than balance out those two.

Out of his depth at this level but a decent guy who conducted himself with some dignity.
Carlo Nash was the polar opposite. A great golkeeper at this level who conducted himself with a total lack of integrity and decency. 'Warming the bench' should be his epitaph.

I'm sorry, I couldn't give a shit about what he's done. He is one of the worst managers we've had for one reason, and one reason only.

The Graham Alexander sale.

I cant slate Simmo in all honesty. Under him we played the best football I have ever seen at Deepdale. Remember Leeds and sunderland at home? He made inspired buys in Sean St Ledger and Billy Jones. He replaced Lewis (Whom Davies couldnt replace) with Danny Pugh. He got the very best out of Danny Dichio and brought in Chilvers who was excellent in his first year. The Carlo Nash thing came about at the worst possible time, yes Shaw wasnt backing Simmo but we were top of the league. Then add to that the injury to Paul Mckenna and things started going down hill.

Simmo obviously then lost the dressing room with the whole bad apples saga and maybe a bit of inexpireince showed. Things could of been very different though.

Simpson had many faults and did make mistakes.

To his credit, though...your post is excellent, and as I remember it factually correct, though tbh I don`t remember the football as THAT good.

Good on tne man for his good vibes towards us. He deserves some back.

The first 6 months under Simpson we played some lovely stuff up until Craig browns Billy Davies has 2 teams in the top 6 comment.
Don't know if Simmo tried changing the way we play to prove a point but we stopped pressing teams and generally turned to rat shit.
That's how I remember it.

TBH, until Phil Brown's arrival I reckon Simmo was the last decent manager we had, certainly better than the last two. It was Derek who sold Grezza BTW, thought it a good deal for an old player & without the benefit of hindsight probably was. Simmo's biggest error was talking to the press too much & not keeping things 'in house'
