PAUL Jewell has confirmed his disappointment at a failure to sign central defender Sean St Ledger from Preston North End.

“I know Preston chairman Maurice Lindsay and while I was out of work towards the end of last year I asked him what fee would he want for Sean,” explained Ipswich Town manager Jewell.
“He told me a price, and we made a bid. But it now appears that the player’s value has gone up by £1million.
“I’d spoken to Preston manager Phil Brown, and it’s disappointing how it’s worked out.”
The Lilywhites are understood to want £2.5 million for the Republic of Ireland international, with Lindsay saying that bids for St Ledger, Billy Jones and Andy Lonergan have all been rebuffed.
“Ipswich wanted to sign St Ledger and we said ‘no’. Along with the other two bids we have seen off it shows that we are not a selling club.
“We are trying to strengthen in our battle to avoid relegation.”
While Town have signed midfielders Jimmy Bullard and Andy Drury they failed to add to their list of strikers.
Jewell says that he wants to see goals spread around the team being happy with the defensive record of his team.
“We looked a bit one dimensional against Millwall, but in the second half against Doncaster we looked much more like a team that can create chances,” said Jewell.
“We will be looking to carry on from that display against Derby.”
Jewell doesn’t expect a great welcome tonight after failing to hit the heights in his previous managerial job at Pride Park.
He went on: “I cannot say that I did well there, but there were mitigating circumstances.
“Am I a better manager for my experience at Pride Park? Time will tell but I think so – I made a lot of mistakes, but they were not all my fault.
“I could have been more patient, and now I am not so impatient and perhaps a bit nicer.”

Ipswich would be a bad move for SSL. I understood when he signed for Boro. They had just come down from the Premiership and looked capable of bouncing back at that stage. Ipswich on the other hand are shite, and so is Jewell.

Well done our Maurice!
+1 Deadly would have probably knocked a million quid off the asking price.

Maybe the extra million is down to SSL finding some form again and perhaps starting to play like the £4m defender hw was a couple of seasons ago.

Hes a bit thick twice over. Thinking that players values dont vary according to the willingness of the seller and buyer and then stating it in public like an idiot amateur. Made some(?) mistakes at Derby -like losing nearly every game.

Why, when he was out of work, would he ask how much we wanted for the player?

Someones telling porkies.

`If I had a club and a job how much would Sean St Ledger be Maurice`? What a load of shite!!!!!!!!!!!!

A conversation between friends while Jewel was out of work-

Mo- someone has enquired about ssl but it wasn't enough
Jewel- well, how much you looking for?

Now jewel is in a job Mo probably asked for the extra million because jewel was being a cheek cunt.

Correct in my opinion. Add in the fact that it was deadline day, we didn't have to sell and Maurice was trying to achieve the best possible deal for the club.

it must be remembered that SSL has only got 18 months left on his contract. I'm also wondering if Billy Jones will go in for any 50/50 tackles now he's been handed a big pay day

Isnt the point here that Jewel maybe applied for the PNE job and he feels snubbed and is now stirring after the fact. He's making himself look cheap.

The word "maybe" is apt.
St.Ledger is carried by other players and is a liability.
He's only worth about £300,000 as far as I'm concerned.
