We said the same. How many times will we sign a midfield general only to actually get a girl guide? Looked completely unfit.
I just wonder if the sensitive flowers that are our players have reacted badly to a "leader" being enforced on them. For me this current shower are the most brainless, clueless, spineless, distanced from the fans, unmotivated bunch of tossers I have ever had the misfortune of clapping eyes on. We could bring in Mourinho with Wenger as his assistant and they wouldn't be able to get them to lift a finger. The lot of them can fuck off.
He is slow, that's mainly down to his age, but he has what we need in abundance. Leadership and guts, some of his covering and tackling today was excellent.

Funny how opinions can differ so much. I also thought he was excellent, as did most sat round me. His passing was simple but effective, positional play excellent and not as slow as I thought he was going to be. I also thought he brought the best out of Russell

Agree with this.
Like the way he bollocked one of the forwards in the second half for not trying to get on a through ball.

I agree, he rarely wasted a ball and got in some good tackles. Unfortunately, players like him, Ellington and Johnson have been brought in too late. If Ferguson had been sacked after the Hull game, a new manager could have been appointed and would have had time to get players in to blend as a team. As it is, it looked like 11 individuals out there today. The players we now have are good enough to hold their own in this league but it takes time for new players to bed in. Sadly, we don't have that time.

Nicholls has been the best midfielder to play for PNE this decade.
He hasn't played for us in this decade ;-)

I made a similar point on the match today, we do have players that can cause problems for the opposition but unfortunately they're not playing as a team. In the past we've been able to punch above our weight because of our work ethic and team-work whilst other bigger clubs have underestimated us to their cost.
Sadly we've lost our identity and feel like we're on a cycle of never-ending change, desperately seeking a quick win but never quite being able to find it.
What worries me is that there'll be yet more change, we'll be playing in League 1 with practically a new defence once Lonergan, Jones, Cort and St Ledger leave (isn't Davidson's contract also up?), and a new forward line as Ellington, Johnson and Clarke will return to their parent clubs. Whilst its an opportunity for a clear out, the likelihood of an immediate return doesn't bode well as new players have to settle in.
I only hope that the manager is strong enough, and the owner passionate enough, to get us back on the right track.
I must admit I was hoping to see more from Ashbee.
Hopefully it's just a case of him bedding into a new team.

Ian Ashbee was as slow as Kevin and contributed as much.
Hopefully it is lack of match fitness because we may well be stuck with him for the next 18months if his better days went with the injury.
Very disappointing thread. He showed an ability to read the game which is sadly lacking in Barton's play

I agree with this wld, and would add that it was good to see him talking and organising the rest of the players, especially the defence, certainly in the first half. It's what we've missed at Deepdale for quite some time - A Leader.
As for the OP likening him to Kevin Nicholls, well he needs to be very careful as this could be construed as slander!
Agreed.
I can't see what others can with Barton.
If Barton is an attacking midfielder - why do our forwrds get such poor service from him? Where are the killer through-balls & other passes ?
And don't get me started on his attempts to tackle. Hell, know he's young - but compared to Conors tackling......
