If Billy Davies is remotely interested in this awful, awful job...

If Billy Davies is remotely interested in this awful, awful job...

Difference is those four managers inherited a club in some form of crisis (one of them due to Davies' antics).

Davies inherited one of our best and most valuable squads in our history.

He is also the only one of the four to jump ship, so of course his win ratio will be higher.

Had Irvine jumped ship when West Brom came calling, Irvine would have the highest win ratio of the lot, having pulled us well clear of relegation, before getting us into the play-offs.

Either way quoting stats is missing the point - he doesn't like budgets, he can't work in a grown up manner with a chairman, and he deliberately tried to destroy our club, and for those reasons he isn't the right person for this job.

No he didn't. He inherited an average team. It was the signings he made of Nash, Hill, Sedgwick and most notably Nugent that turned us into a Play Off finalist team.

We were going into a relegation battle under Irvine in his final season though. He also failed to save Sheffield Wednesday from relegation, and they were under achieving in League 1 as well.

In mid September we were 2 points of the top spot, when he lost the services of St Ledger just a few hours before an important game.

We then had a bit of a difficult spell but many games were drawn or lost by the odd goal, and when he was sacked we were still just 8 points from the play off places and St Ledger had just returned to Deepdale, so things would have improved without a doubt.

We wasn't heading for the trap door (until Ferguson was brought in!)

I liked Davies when he was here and he's still one of the top managers we've ever had however his signings haven't been that great and for you to only name four players, one of them Sedgwick, who IMO was an awful signing to this day, just shows how you're clutching at straws there. Craig Brown made our best signings and BD inherited a very good squad but unlike Brown, he was able to motivate those players and play to their strengths. To say he inherited an average team is a load of bollocks. We were top of the league even when we had Teffers in goal before we signed Nash. It's between him and Simmo in who inherited the best sides upon their appointment.

Let's not forget David Moyes here who also inherited a very good squad. As did Craig Brown, unlike Gary Peters who inherited a shambles and Phil Brown likewise.

One of BDs finest achievements, was the way he turned Brian O'Neill from an unfit old crock into one of our most important players.

Moyes inherited a squad playing like a bunch of muppets .
He turned Ranking into a decent player .
Irvine was fucking shit .
He spent lots and his tactics were awful . Shef weds fans thought exactly the same .

Indeed Norky. That's why I struggle to understand the clowns that belittle Alan Irvines record here. Having taken over a side that was bottom of the league and heading out of it, lead them to safety. Then followed that up with a 6th place finish in his only full season at the club. A fantastic achievement and a record to be proud of.

It was no suprise that when Irvine returned to Deepdale just a couple of months later he was given a fantastic reception from all four sides of the ground.

Give me failure in the Championship play offs any day to where we're at now.

can you check the stat about us being bottom of the league when Irvine was made manager - pretty sure he took us bottom on New Years Day when we lost at Sheff Weds and yes we did stay up and ended up in the same position or thereabouts from when he took the job

This Billy Davies Malarkey.

This Billy Davies Malarkey.

It's rather like the, 'we could have signed Charlie Adam' fable. It's wishful thinking without any substance. You'll go for the cheapest option with the hope of avoiding relegation.

Good luck.

Let's not forget David Moyes here who also inherited a very good squad.

We were utter dogshit until Moyes weaved his magic. He improved virtually every player in that team, some dramatically.

Under 99% of managers Peters' squad would have been broken up, the likes of Macken and Rankine etc sold on.

I dare say that in the same position, with a couple of signings, Moyes could take our current squad to the Championship play offs.

You're partly correct, what I should have said is he took over when we were in the bottom 4 and heading for certain relegation. We were on a downward spiral at the time and it wasn't until the January transfer window when Irvine made some very astute signings that helped guide us up the league ladder and to safety finishing well above the trap door and not in the same position than when he took over.

Where we were in league when Davies took over? No where near top. If we were a good side Pa Brown wouldnt have been sacked. We also sold Healy very quickly after Davies tookover. We weren't a good side when he took over. With regards to Sedgwick, he played well when he first came. I only named them 4 signings as they were the ones in that first season who had a massive impact. I won't deny he made some bad signings overall, but he made some good ones too. My point was it was his signings in January that made us a good team.

That sounds about right, certainly took some time to halt the slide. But then I would not have sacked Simpson 🙂

I am not convinced Craig Brown inherited a good squad, more a team of overachievers that Moyes had motivated into a great unit but the likes of Eyres, Edwards, Murdock, Jackson et al all needed replacing.
