Peter Ridsdale says it is ‘highly likely’ that Graham Alexander and David Unsworth will remain in charge of Preston North End for their Boxing Day clash with Carlisle.

The joint caretaker bosses oversaw Saturday’s 1-0 win over MK Dons, and they’ll be asked this week whether they now want to be considered for the manager’s job full-time.
North End chairman Ridsdale has an open mind about whether to appoint from within or look for an outside candidate.
He’s been meeting with some of the applicants on an informal basis but insists him and the board won’t be rushed into a decision.
After going through six managers in the nine-and-a-half years since David Moyes’ departure, the PNE board know that they need to get this appointment right.
Ridsdale told the Evening Post: “We’re in no hurry because we want to get the right decision.
“The two lads in charge at the moment will be asked tomorrow if they want to throw their hats into the ring. If they do want to be considered they will be put on the list, and Saturday’s result will certainly help them.
“I think it’s highly likely that Graham and David will in charge for Boxing Day.
“You never know exactly what is going to happen, but I’d be extremely surprised if they weren’t.”
A seventh minute goal from Paul Parry gave North End victory at Stadium:MK, the Welshman finding the net for the first time in over two years.
His far post header was part of an early flourish from the visitors in which they could have been further ahead.
The Dons got on the front foot as the game progressed, but despite having the greater share of possession, there weren’t too many heart-stopping moments in the Preston camp.
Ridsdale said: “Clearly the players were playing for Graham and David which says a lot. I spoke briefly with them after the game and we’ll be having a full football review tomorrow afternoon.
Saturday’s performance pleased me, MK Dons had a lot of possession as the game went on, but the rules of the game are that you need to put the ball in the net – we did that, they didn’t.”
The PNE chairman wouldn’t be drawn on speculation surrounding the names of potential managerial candidates. Billy Davies is someone many fans would like to see back at Deepdale after he twice guided Preston to the Championship play-offs in his two years in charge.
Said Ridsdale: “We had 22 people who have applied –there were actually more, but I’m talking about 22 names in football as oppose to young lads playing Championship Manager on the computer. Half a dozen are top quality candidates, and it will need me to spend some time with them to see if they are the right fit for Preston North End.
“I will be seeing some people and have seen people already because they have asked to meet up and talk.
“I am not going to comment specifically on individuals, but I’m sure if I wrote down a list and other people did, they would be quite similar.”

Ridsdale needs to get with the times - it's called Football Manager nowadays Pete 🙂 Anyone playing championship manager should have their CV filed in the bin immediately.

I read the article as Grezza and Unsworth can apply separately and that he also sees the current double act as not an option. It's one with the other as assistant.

I think if I was Grezza I would push for Unsworth as the man and apply for his assistant, the 2 of them both singing from the same hymn sheet would be seen as a stronger application than both wanting the same post.

No need to worry

No need to worry

Unsworth, as manager with Alexander alongside him, is, for me, the dream ticket for PNE right now.
Crucially, if the manager's job is an equation, these two balance it. In terms of club finances, club loyalty, experience, enthusiasm, successful record as reserve team manager, contacts with premier league people, international experience, experience with top coaches.

Continuity and internal progression is what kept North End progressing from John Beck onwards (as it did at Liverpool for two decades).

For me, the footage from Stadium Wimbledon MK spoke volumes. The sight of these two chatting excitably at the start, constantly discussing tactics throughout the game, and them jumping in delight at the final whistle, is all you can ask for in a manager.

This, in addition to the most effective team selection at the start. Coutts into centre mid. Mayor right wing (a classic performance by a player who I think has mild echoes of Sir Tom), left footers on the left, right footers on the right, and a big bugger in the centre of midfield.
I also think that Tsoumou should be given time to get better. Perhaps a luxury at the moment, once he gets his confidence up, I think he'll be dangerous. Perhaps a bit too nervous at the moment. Who wouldn't be, playing for PNE?

I think Unsworth can spot the ability in players that others can't. Like Moyes, I sense he can make all players perform at their best. Smith looked unrecognisable at the weekend, after the last time I saw him play.

Should North End be careful about losing Unsworth? Would we regret it if he went down the road and succeeded, before we give him the chance to take us up?
Well done Dave.

"mild echoes of Sir Tom" no way. We have had much better wingers than Mayor since Sir Tom retired and none of them deserved that description.

"Well be having a full football review tomorrow"?Funny thing for the Chairman to get Involved with.

He is called 'Chairman of Football'. I suspect it will be more to do with the kind of signings we need in January rather than down to the tactics etc.

Danny Mayor - going to Be a decent player. Echoes of 'The Man', not yet. I think Danny himself would be embarrassed by that one!
In fact there are very few players I would compare with Sir Tom. To have been a skillful player, a great goalscorer and a gentleman are qualities that are difficult to find, particularly these days when prima donna attitudes prevail. I would bracket Finney only with Eusebio, Pele and Charlton. Bit to go yet Danny lad, but who knows?
As a matter of interest Finney got 76 caps for England and scored 30 goals; not bad for a winger!

looks like its between
o driscoll
jones
davies
alexander/unsworth
ince

but i do agree, its alexanders and unsworths to lose. i hope personally it's either them two or billy davies.
