“We had 22 people who have applied –there were actually more, but I’m talking about 22 names in football as oppose to young lads playing Championship Manager on the computer." Peter Ridsdale

Imagine you are on the selection panel. What are the 'essential criteria' for the Preston manager role?

low salary, can work with no budget, will not need any more staff

has no problem with selling your best 3 players in Jan

The expectation set by the chairman, Mr Risdale, is that PNE should be a team challenging for promotion to the Premiership, the stand out managerial candidate who can deliver this, has got to be Billy Davies, anything less is a compromise.

You can't name your candidate without criteria! That's unethical! Besides, one of the other candidates may be better in every department. What qualities does Billy have that you'd like to see in a manager?

A proven track record with three different clubs in achieving the current chairman’s aspiration for PNE, that is for PNE to be a club challenging for promotion to the Premiership.

+1 This.... thread closed! That is all.

Eh? You guys are unbelievable. Just because Billy did that then does not mean that he could do it now. Perhaps even the contrary is true and he will be blinded by his past actions, perhaps he is not able to adapt or learn. The way he spoke at Nottingham was remarkably similar to the way he was here don't you think? He wanted support from the Chairman which he certainly will not get here.

He succeeded then only because he has certain qualities then, qualities shared by other people now. Perhaps the same qualities which led to him wanting to go to a bigger club. He had determaination and passion and optimism, he wanted to prove himself, he was not tainted by failure! Basically. If it's not 'blind faith' then it is supported by argument!

In any case the thread is closed since nobody here has the sense to enter into a real discussion about what it takes to be a good manager.

Blind faith definition for you = belief with is not supported by sufficient evidence, true understanding, perception, or discrimination.

Pick whatever names you want but unless you can support it with rational argument then your opinion is meaningless.

Pretentious nonsense!

Billy Davies.

5 Full Championship seasons in his total career with 3 different teams.

5 Top 6 placing resulting in the Playoffs.

Devour this, then try and annihilate me. You quite simply can't.

I wouldn't like to devour you, sorry. Neither am I going to argue with you (i don't want to). You still haven't answered the question though... why?

4th best win ratio at PNE since 1950, 2nd best points per game ratio since 1950.

I've argued my case! 😀

Successfully might I add!

No you haven't. You haven't listed one charactoristic that makes a good manager. You've just argued that one manager has achieved some good results. Why? If you can answer that then you might be on the way to having an argument.

Same question to number three. Why? What is it about his style, tactics, managerial skill? Are there any other managers which have these qualities? How would you select a new manager?

Fella, I deal in results in a business that is based upon results.

Yes, Billy is a twat but he gets results far more than most.

There is a saying..."Nice guys always finish 2nd".

Instead of me pushing Billy, you try and knock him down from a results / tactical basis.

The answer is is that you can't.

Futhermore, you project to ME a manager who can equal the record of Billy Davies at Championship level over the past 5 seasons.

I think I'll be having quite a wait here...

I was a big Billy believer 1st time round. He has had relative success since he left us, brilliant success for himself financially.

But surely the 1st answer to this question has to be:

The new manager has to be able to WORK WITH the new chairman of football to bring us success for the fans and owner.
