Good news!!

Good news!!

This forum is actually the perfect example of be careful what you wish for.

Main topics of last 5 years:

(1) Shaw spend some money FFS!

(2) Get rid of Shaw!

(3) Get Hemmings in!

(4) Change the manager!

(5) Get rid of Lonergan/McKenna etc

Admittedly many of these were a handful of empty vessels repeating the same over and over, but if you look at the demands of the small cross section of fans that come on here, they've all been met. For the end result just check out the league table compared to 2 years ago.

The mentality on here is amazing. Everybody and his dog wanted Ferguson out. Then everybody wanted Brown out. Now everybody wants Westley out. Maybe...just maybe the common denominator here isn't the manager. Maybe the club has been heading in the wrong direction for a number of years and maybe like an oil tanker it isn't going to be able to change direction very quickly. Switching the manager all the time is not working. It never works. Show me a club which is successful and I can guarantee that club will have had a manager who has been given time.

I don't know if Westley is the man. I don't know whether he's a one hit wonder or not. I don't pretend to be able to predict the future. But I know one thing for sure and thats that you can't judge anything from 10 games.

Swansea?

I agree the turnover isnt good for the club, but that doesnt automatically mean that giving any manager time means hes gonna be successful, or that we should give a manager who isn't working out more time to take the club further backwards. theres no reasonable logic to those conclusions whatsoever.

Id be right behind westley if wed seen any improvement whatsoever, and hes had the time and resource for us to expect some sort of improvement, even incremental, but hes taken us backward in pretty much every sense. To the extent that people are, almost justifiably, expecting relegation.

You can have AC Milan as an example of a new manager instantly doing well but Jose is in his second season at Real before he has achieved anything. He was regularly in the frame for being sacked last season (according to the media). Obviously Real Madrid have nothing on our beloved PNE so it's no comparison really, just wanted to explain how some of your point was wrong.

Madrid were probably the second best club side in the world least season. Second to arguably the greatest club side of all time.

Agree with this, not all managers can be successful no matter how much time they are given. They do as you say need a reasonable amount of time to achieve success but should show some positive effects quite early in their period in charge. The reason why successful clubs give managers time might just be because they are successful, a bit of a chicken and egg situation in a way.

If you knock a house down and rebuild it it is going to be before you see anything take shape. Westley, and this is really putting a positive slant on his reign to date, has made massive changes in personnel and playing 'style.' If we end the season just above the relegation zone and begin next with back to back wins then all will be well!!

The knocking the house down analogy is an interesting one, perhaps it is best to do this when no one is still living in the house.

Swansea is a very different situation. Brendon Rogers took over a club on a steady rise up the divisions and in a great position to move forward. He didn't need to turn anything around or to rebuild. His was a similar situation to the one which Billy Davies inherited at North End.

Its important to keep remembering how bad a situation Westley had inherited. Billy Davies had he taken over like eveyone wanted - I suspect he may well have gone about things in a not dissimilar manner. He would certainly have started from the back like Westley has done. Defensively we are stronger than we were under Brown. That is an improvement.

Real Madrid - currently ten points clear of Barcelona
AC Milan - current Italian champions
Chelsea I'll give you
Germany - not even a club

So you're talking out of your arse here.

Of course we have the same sort of financial clout as this lot so potting managers, at great expense, won't have any real impact on PNE will it?

I didn't say we did have the "same financial clout as this lot", I was merely clarifying that two of the four have enjoyed recent success and one's a fucking country.

Few Stevenage Fans views on Westley today: -

If he can get a squad together early in pre season, I'll be surprised if you're not up there.
He's just digging out all the weeds in your team as it is.
Our squad has many players that weren't deemed good enough by other clubs in the conference but thrived under westley's management and have improved dramatically.
Any players happy to commit to the work levels westley demands will improve their game if they can stay injury free - anyone else, as you say, is clearly just interested in their pay packet.

I would be happy if we had gone for someone who know about English football and will follow PNE results with interest next year as they will finish well above us next season

Also when you have some decent bricks sourced to build a new one,not used bricks taken from a worse house than you started with !

To suck further on the withered teet of this analogy; when you constantly change the manager then you also have no foundations. We do need someone to create a solid base to build on.

You missed...

(6) Get Darren Carter

(7) Get Kevin Nicholls

In all seriousness the current set up is so far from eutopia it really is unbelievable! That said chopping and changing clearly doesn't work and we're never gonna all agree on who is in the hotseat so that they truly get time.

My only preference is for a manager who doesn't play what I call "formula" football. What I mean by that is the Charles Hughes mantra of football, where it's all about having a set of big, strong, super fit lads and we play down the channels and it's all about percentages. There's no denying that this type of football works, Sheff Wed took a comfortable 0-2 win at Deepdale playing exactly that type of football. Warnock, McCarthy, Pulis and Allardyce have made a career out of it, but it's not for me.

I'll give Westley his chance but it is with great reluctance and I'm afraid this type of manager will always have this stigma because it's just not pretty. I like comparisons with Barca or even Swansea and at the moment we're being compared with Wigan Warriors and Leeds Rhinos, this should tell you everything. Good luck Graham!
