Matchday Thread Preston North End v Rotherham United - 16/08/22 - KO:19:45 - Championship

Fantastic display except for the obvious.
Only slight criticism is that we maybe didn’t need to start with the two sitting midfielders.
Lastly we should only be concentrating on bringing a striker in not getting rid of a quality one.
Evans looked like the player who’d done 85 minutes when he came on, hopefully it’s the fact he’s hardly played through his own recklessness. Some very encouraging signs, Brady is simply beyond words - his defensive game has surprised me but he’s just sheer quality,

Someone should tell the referee that keepers can only keep the ball in their hands for 6 seconds. I know they all try it on, and we do our best to time waste ourselves, but we timed one occasion at 25 seconds. That particular offence is punishable by a yellow card and an indirect free kick, it was that extreme tonight that it should have been punished.

Few things for me:

- Anyone calling out Parrot is a muppet. Yes, he missed a big chance, but my god, he’s a brilliant footballer. Can tell he’s been training with Kane/Son on a regular. His movement is superb, his touch is excellent and his all round game is far better than Archer (if only he had Cam’s finishing ability)

- DJ. Horrific. That’s it. Genuinely dreadful tonight.

- Best football we have played in an age. If Riis does go, this is genuinely the best chance we have had. That money NEEDS to be re-invested. Lowe has something building here.

As much as Luton was a great result, this was a pretty poor one.

One up front with Ledson and Browne in the midfield is a 0-0-and-let's-try-and-snatch-one formation, and doesn't suit us at home.

Aside from DJ's early effort and Parrott's one-on-one, we didn't create much of quality in the first hour, and we still play too many high crosses into a box full of players that - regardless of the quality of the cross - can't do much with high crosses.

Rotherham for their part defended resolutely, and deserve full credit for that (and they didn't just sit back the whole game either). As entertainment for a neutral it was probably a really good 0-0 to watch.

We created more late on, but a lot were pot shots from range, not much was clear-cut - which is what this team needs to be able to score a goal it seems.

And, Riis apart, the subs didn't work, and pointed to a general lack of game-changing quality on the bench. Luckily the transfer window is still open.

I'm not having it!

As negative as I can be at times after a draw or a defeat, I am really proud of the whole team performance today. I think Lowe got it right. Plenty of low balls in too, they weren't all high. If one of those shots went in we'd be over the moon with it. Fact is, it didn't happen and I don't think there's one factor to blame, except to say that sometimes that happens in football.

Think playing Ledson actually frees up Whiteman to actually get on the ball. Normally when he’s playing at the base of the midfield on his own, an opposition player just stands on his toes all game

Parrot has missed big chances in every game I’ve seen.

Yes his link up play & movement are excellent but that’s not why we got him. He needs to score goals.

Couldn't get on tonight with work but seems we played some really good stuff, great atmosphere and fans entertained.
YET, we still seem to have some moaning over critical whoppers.

Dreadful team selection. Only goalscorer in the squad sat on bench for an hour. Other subs made too late. 1 goal in four league games and no goals at home says it all. You need to play your goalscorers and goal creators. Until you get other goalscoring options in the squad you have to pick Riis. We have Woodburn who is creator sat on bench and McCann who scored twice last week also benched. Instead Lowe continues to pick his favourites who are not creators or goalscorers.
Sounds like you needed a HT pie.
Q too big was it?

Parrott’s 1 one 1 attempt was pathetic. Childish attempt. Almost cowardly.

He will never make it beyond championship level.

We’ll go up with a proper striker.

About as positive as I can be. Best football since the King Billy days, most of them were 0-0 an all.

If Double J is commenting positively about the football, something must be good 😂

Means absolutely fuck all when it reads Preston nil every game. If it wasn't for an absolutely gravity defying volley then it would have read 0-0 for 4 games in a row.

Play him as a 10 and sign a proper striker.

I’ll disagree with you as usual.

No we won’t.

We will have a better chance with one.

We have a quality manager. Now let’s back him!

We hardly ever beat Rotherham at home. It’s usually boring long ball football against them. Makes a change seeing us play it on the deck for a change.

We’ve got 2, 3 if you count Evans.

How about having a positive outlook for a change, we are in the play off positions ffs. Undefeated and yet to concede.
Sorry but Evans isn't reliable. Imagine that's the first leg of the play offs and we're throwing Evans on to gain an aggregate lead. We're not going to get promoted in that scenario. We need more quality/strength in depth if we want to get promoted.

Saturday won’t be 0-0.

Our defence won’t keep Watford out. Has to play Riis, even if that means sacrificing one of his beloved DJ or Browne.
