Matchday Thread Norwich City v PNE - 09/12/23 - KO:3PM - Championship

1 point off the playoffs, 3 points off 5th 😁

Only jesting, but it is a fact, for those who like facts.

I asked a question the other day: would fans prefer it if we played expansive, easy on the eye, attacking football like Plymouth and were 7 points worse off and 9 places further down the league?

I'm guessing you might say you will be OK with it, since league position isn't that important to you? (by the same token, I assume it doesn't matter where we finish in the league?)

It's a genuine question, not being belligerent.
I don’t see why it needs to be either or? We don’t have the players for expansive football without picking up results like Plymouth, but at the same time are squad is better than the crap we’ve served up all year. We barely score any goals yet ship them like nobodies business

I’m easily pleased, I’m happy with seeing a recognisable style of play and clear tactical preparation - that’s why I enjoyed Neil’s first two years. We didn’t play expansive football, we were super aggressive in the press and a lethal counter attacking team, which was why we were capable of beating anyone on our day. I cannot see a single element of tactical preparation or coached style of play under Lowe, and haven’t for over 12 months.

And yeah, I’d rather finish 15th and look back over the season at a number of games where I’ve enjoyed the performance, we’ve scored 3 or 4 goals and battered a team, than finish 8th after a year of boring game after boring game with exclusively 1 goal victories and multiple thrashing. But maybe I have different interests when it comes to football than others

Made my thoughts on Lowe clear last month when I said I would give him until Christmas. So not arguing there.

But the question is whether its possible to play expansive attacking football at PNE and achieve promotion, if that's what we're all saying we want to see and achieve?

Not possible the way the club is currently run or budgeted.

Sure, we could have a go and be presented with a pound shop version, but the fans won't tolerate that.
Unfortunately, some fans expect a five star hotel meal with a McDonald's budget.

Why is it 'never going to happen'?

Luton got to the PL after appointing a young up-and-coming manager - and without spending millions.

And we have invested in some better players this season but the manager, who presumably had a say in his signing, leaves one of our most expensive acquisitions ever on the bench more often than not.

He also gave extended contracts to the likes of Ledson, Cunningham, Woodburn and, worst of all, Brady - money that could have been spent on acquiring players to actually fit the system he insists on playing - such as proper wingbacks.

It will never be easy for a club of our size to gain promotion but with judicious appointments and signings, Luton, for one, have shown it can be done. If we don't believe that, we may as well give up.
Do we really know who give those contracts? Ridsdale, Lowe or a combination? Where Ledson and Wooodburn are concerned whoever offered them contracts should not be at our club.

Fwiw, my tuppence worth -

I didn’t see today’s game apart from the last 5 mins.

I want Lowe to go as much as anyone but to vilify him for today’s tactics at Norwich is ridiculous imo. We needed to stop the rot and he did that, we might even have nicked it.

Totally agree. I want Lowe to go asap but I’d have taken a 0-0 at Norwich. But I expect 3 points at Huddersfield this week.

Norwich have conceded 36 goals this season which is more than us yet we went there to defend…a tactically astute manager would have taken the game to them considering they leak goals. He’s just not a good enough championship manager.

Probably been posted already- but these Sky highlights tell a very different story compared to this matchday thread

We had 4 decent chances but none actually came from open play.
It was a decent point but we are absolutely woeful to watch.

Surely Lowe, as manager, had the final say? As far as Ledson and Woodburn in particular are concerned, that much is apparent from the number of times he's played them.

As others have said, in isolation and from a result point of view, getting a point and a clean sheet is welcome considering our run of recent results.

That’s where the positives end though I’m afraid. It’s quite amazing the number of fans that literally treat each game in isolation and fail completely or just choose to ignore the bigger picture. From a performance/progression point of view - it’s terminal, we won’t be seeing any sort of miraculous turn around. He’s just put out a team and a formation to not concede and not put any focus on attack.

Across the whole of this season so far, performances haven’t been great - we’ve had good results early on, but that’s not happening now that teams have worked us out…if they really need to do that at all.

We go through the same cycles - this is the lead up to the end of Lowe, like Frankie and Neil. The football has gone and if you’re happy with it - then you’re happy with league 1 standard football. There’s not enough passion and effort through the team to get us through tough patches and games.

You can sit there and say you don’t give a shit about what people that are not fans or linked to our club say, but when we become a joke and ridiculed, you realise how shit we have become. If I was a Norwich fan today, I’d be pissed off of not getting the 3 points.

Echoing others, I’m not expecting Champaign football (impossible with our owner and ā€˜advisor) - but I do expect something resembling football and passion/fight to go with it.

You are the second poster to mention this like it is an either/or.

Very few teams in our league are able to play expansive football.

However, it would he nice to see us play with some sort of attacking intent and not bore everyone to death from time to time.

You have to remember all this "brand" ā„¢ļø was from his own words.
To me it wouldn't be quite as bad if he showed a little humility and actually said 'maybe i was a little bit silly to prattle on about a 'Brand' of fast attacking football when actually i've realised that with the Players we have, we maybe have to be a bit more pragmatic, i would like them to get forward a little bit quicker than we do, though, and we are working on that'
Not that i would expect him to use those exact words, but something along the lines of, wouldn't go amiss.

For me, what happens on Tuesday is key. Whilst today's tactics worked (to extent) we can't afford to sit back and soak up the pressure against Huddersfield.

Excellent performance, I dont care if Im alone in thinking this, but after that run this is exactly what was needed.
You’re embarrassing .

If it wasn’t for poor finishing by Norwich we’d have been twatted, that’s all it was.

What exactly was excellent about that performance?

We were completely outplayed and registered one shot on target from our rare attacks.

Lowe said the other day he’s not going to change what he does so shit points like today just keep the useless twat here that little bit longer.

It's absolutely infuriating seeing the "we don't have the resources" gang talk about style of play. I think most are just absolutely baffled we employ a system the majority of time with 5 defenders and 2 sitting midfielders while still regularly getting spanked. If your pragmatic whilst still getting results (and people can actually recognise a coached system with patterns of play) most would be happy. The standard of coaching is evidently dog. Graysons football was turgid but you were always in a game wherever you went because you knew the players were well drilled.
