Matchday Thread PNE v Ipswich - 03/02/24 - KO:3PM - Championship

I hate nothing more in modern football than centre backs taking goal kicks, only to pass it 5 yards sideways to the keeper

What’s the point

Fair play in persisting with it, but I imagine they go and get another keeper in the summer because Hladky cannot play out from the back.

Especially on what was a very poor pitch. It seems that a whole generation of Guardiola type managers are coming through and it’s very boring. At the risk of getting my threads mixed up, we need to find a way that’s different to the norm if we’re going to achieve anything. I have no real idea of who or what that different way is. Maybe it’s a manager who’s had a break and is ready to return after spending the last few years researching and studying?

Years? Or 10+ years? 🤣

Thought we did ok. You could say we were a little fortunate with a couple of our goals, but we took our chances. Ipswich are a decent team and were never just going to sit back and let us win 3-0. We really need to learn as a team we can't sit back and defend especially at home - we can't defend to save our lives.

On another note another game I've seen where the standard of the match official was worse than shocking. For both teams. Now becoming a common theme this season IMO.

Decent 3 points.

Did you stay until the end ??

We won, we got three points and that is the main thing, but yes for a huge part of the second half we just tried to defend that 3-0 half time score..
Fortunately we managed to keep Ipswich to just two goals, but the majority of the second half was just bombardment of our 18 yard box, with us defending deeper and deeper.
Hopefully we will learn from the game and move forward, a win is a win and some of our attacking play in the first half was good to watch, We need to learn how to put to good halves together, back to back.👍🤔

No, I did actually get a bus but not the shuttle and left just before Woodburn’s appearance to make sure I caught the return bus. I would have got the shuttle but I forgot it was time to leave and missed it!

Back from the match. A game of two halves. We were well prepared for them in first half with their short game and made them pay. Their keeper looking very uncomfortable with the ball at his feet. Second half the introduction of Moore and a more direct approach, meant we were having to defend more and getting deeper and deeper resulting in little options for an out ball and we then see more pressure as the ball keeps coming back at us into dangerous areas. Thought ref was poor, Keane mom and a mention for Whiteman. I am worried about Osmajic. His habit of diving is becoming annoying and gives the opposition cheap possession.

Still 3 points I didnt expect. Have a good weekend.

Defending also isn’t all about tackling, pressuring your opponent is just as effective - as we saw several times today. This narrative that he can’t defend or doesn’t work hard enough is just nonsense. I’ve no idea who started it, presumably someone who manages a football team.
As a true professional and multi-season manager on FIFA, I would never level such an accusation at an opposing player.

So, why did I feel as we came away from Deepdale that we had just lost the match! First half we came out of the traps at a sprint, wonderful flowing football, great to watch and a trio of goals from Keene and Riis really deflated the Tractors tyres. What did Mr Badges tell them at ½ time I wonder? It was to be expected that Ipswich would come out all guns blazing and we just sat back with just a few forays up front. After Ipswich's first goal I suspected that we might once again capitulate and after the second I was sure. Mr Badges substitutions were the usual suspects that made us seem even worse. Why Mads was taken off I still cannot fathom. The Referee blew hot and cold, but for possibly for the first time I can remember, NO Cards issued. So well done to the Team for the entertainment which was good to see again, but I think with little credit to Mr Badges.
Kudos to Ipswich for bringing 3435 Supporters all that way from East Anglia, a hell of a drive. On to the next match then sitting in 10th just 3 point away from the Play offs
(less the negative goal difference) and see what happens. Mr Badges OUT!

A direct ploy to a big forward should not be hard to defend, cut out the crosses, so shut people down, give the no room to bombard the 18 yard area.
More importantly put your biggest, defender, the one who is your dominant aerial defender to mark him one on one.
That is not difficult, pretty basic, but we don't, we continue to defend with zonal marking so we failed and he got the two goals getting Ipswich back in the game.🤔

We won't learn because it is what our badges manager does and it nearly cost us another 2 points today. Lowe got lucky..again.

Does anyone else think it may not be a tactical decision to sit back but a lack of fitness?
Not sure it is, perhaps late on yes, but we defended far too deep before Ipswich scored the first goal, we were fortunate not to concede prior to the first goal Ipswich scored.
Whether it is fitness levels or tactical decision either way it is down to the manager and his coaching team.🤔

It doesn’t surprise me that a team that has been in the top 4 all season and had only lost 3 games prior to today comes back strongly.
We are not solid enough defensively though.

We defended far too deep, allowed them.far too much time on the ball, did not close players down or stop the numerous crosses into our box.
We had managed this in the first half along with attacking Ipswich, creating numerous chances and scoring three goals.
Unfortunately we did not follow through this game plan in the second half
🤔

Thoughts on this?

This was for the first goal. Probably a foul isn’t it and one that VAR overturns I’d imagine.

THIS IS NOT ME SAYING I WANT VAR.
