Matchday Thread Cardiff City v PNE -10/02/24 - KO:3PM - Championship

Just need Lowe to follow the advice he gives the players - “have belief”.

Take the game to Middlesbrough rather than give a timid defensive effort like we did at the Riverside and we can beat them.

Same line up (injuries permitting) and brand as last Sat and today please.
Middlesbrough are really average at the moment. Nothing to fear. Take the game to them and we win

A deserved three points. A curious first half in which for twenty minutes we were awful. Couldn’t hold or pass the ball and Cardiff were lining up the shots on target. And then totally against the run of play, we found some space down the left and Riis twisted, turned and torched a rocket past the near post.
Thereafter we bossed the game. Plenty of possession, picking our moments and weaving a beautiful second for Whiteman to roll home.
Cardiff’s frailty was all too apparent after the first goal and didn’t really go away even with Aaron Ramsey and Reuben Colwill supposedly pulling strings.
Our front four were superb. All of them a menace and Mads getting better and better - a player in a different class. Keane and Riis are strong and quick, Millar is just a handful. Whiteman swept up nicely. Lindsay handled a big forward line solidly. And I thought Hughes also did well, especially after Cardiff hooked Bowler at half time. All Andrew’s Christmases…
Tbh, less impressed by Browne who was at the heart of much of the first twenty minutes of rubbish. And Storey also had a difficult game although in fairness he had a job on his hands containing Etete.
I hope Potts and Browne recover quickly although McCann stood in manfully. Brady and Woodburn got their appearance money again but thankfully this time they were only needed for a few minutes.
We have some good players who are starting to gel as a team. Jury still out on whether that’s the result of managerial strategy or good fortune. Time might tell.

Could be a huge week now.

Win on Wednesday and then that Rovers game is absolutely massive.

We play a lot of the teams in and around us now. Pick up a few results and you never know.

Doubt that very much, sadly. PNE
I think he's been better recently, maybe had a little reflection time.
I want him to succeed, i didn't like him telling me i was watching something i wasn't, nor talking bullshit, but if he cuts that out and matures a little as a person, then at the end of the day its results that count.
He hasn't helped himself in the past, but he could in the future, and he has recently adopted a slightly less, its all about me tone.
If he carries on i might change my opinion, to keep - but not yet.
He still has a bit to do.

Losing Rogers is a big blow, and Matt Crooks is off to the US, another key player for them. We shouldn't be facing them or Hull with any fear.

Hull are absolutely carried by Philogene, that Carvalho who everyone was fawning over has had a very average start.

A strange game today. The pitch was unusually bouncy, or the balls were over inflated. First twenty minutes incredibly scrappy. Next ten minutes became walking football, both teams slowed it down, I guess in the hope of getting some control. Then, during the final fifteen minutes Preston changed gear and Cardiff continued with their walking football. Two really good goals. Riis hit it so hard I thought he'd hit the side netting, as for the second I've got to see the replay. Second half was slow and scrappy and that suited Preston. Freddie took a huge amount of stick and was solid throughout although his distribution was shaky at times. Whiteman was composed throughout the game and hit some glorious long balls to Millar. Mads put in a shift and was sublime at times. Potts injury appeared to be behind the knee or maybe the upper calf. I think the physio made the call to get him off. Browne appeared to hurt his shin. Neither injury looked serious to me 🤞.
The stadium was virtually empty after 85 minutes, perhaps the fans decided to go to the pub and watch the rugby, I went and joined them, but kept my mouth shut, although my accent is more Welsh than Lancashire these days.
To summarise a strange game but a good result.

Just got home and although we deserved the three points the game up until Riis scored was absolutely dreadful. We looked like we were there for a smash and grab and Cardiff looked like they didn’t know why they were there!!

Once Riis Scored it seemed to spark belief into our team and from then on in there was only one team who looked likely to win the match. Second goal was brilliant (from the stands anyway) and shows what we can do in games.

We are still a very frustrating watch though as we could have gone on to score 3/4 or 5 today but once the hour mark struck we seemed like we had had enough and knew full well Cardiff had nothing in them.

Fantastic 3 points. Am I concerned long term - yes, but right now we are in a good position in the table with no real expectation either.

Well done, kudos to you and the other PNE faithful who made a journey to a place we don't often do well at. You could hear the PNE, PNE, PNE and 'Yellows' chants on i follow very loudly. Us stay at home fans (who once went away) salute and commend you for carrying the flag, onward.
