January 2026 - Transfer Rumours and Discussions

what positions do people feel we need?

Wing back we're down to bare bones but 5 players in the squad whos role is WB

Small, Vuc, Pol, Potts and Brady. With Hughes and Offiah as make shifts there.

An extra forward would be nice. Maybe someone with potential to cover/replace Hughes

I don’t think we will see Brady this season and it might be the same for Potts.
That said, Small, Vuk , Pol and Offiah should be enough cover with Jordan Thompson also due back….

I agree about an extra forward… as I posted elsewhere , forward options of Osmajic, Jebbison , Dobbin and Cannon would be brilliant.

I’m assuming in the short term that Lewis is the cover for Hughes , maybe we offer him another 4/5 months if he does well between now and Christmas.

Getting rid of Keane and replacing him with another Striker would be a decent start. Keane is finished at this level and nowhere to be seen (is he even fit?)

I'd be tempted to bring in another defensive player on loan until the end of the season potentially too. Or extend Lewis' contract if he does well.

I guess the question of any other players coming in depends on whether we sell any (Osmajic?) or if Armstrong gets recalled to Everton...

Potts isn't a wingback, never was to be honest although he did a job there for us for way too long. So he's off that list.
Brady is an absolute sixk note at this stage of his career, should have been gone in the summer. Hopefully we can find him a move away in January.
That leaves us 3 wing backs plus the potential extension to James if we go that way.
Offiah can just about do a job as wing back although he basically plays that like a full back as he offers nothing going forward really. Fine as cover.
Hughes should be nowhere near wing back, leave him as LCB where he can actually be effective.

We definitely need another striker in January but I feel like we'll be told there's no money. See what Hecky can find in the bargain bin, he's doing well so far on that front.

forgot we'd signed Jamal Lewis as well, thats 6 players in the squad who can play the roles and as demanding as it is, cant see us carrying any more there with our budget.

Yeah Cannon would be nice. Think him and Osmajic are quite similar but just one them to come on for the last half hour and get a few game winning goals could make or break the season

Smith as well as the big lump option is handy - though the player from the first few games of the season to come back would be nice.

I don't think we'll do much.

Hopefully Lewis impresses and earns a longer deal. That plus a decent striker loan like Cannon would be a good window if we can get the likes of Pol back fit.

I think the recovery of the injured players, what happens with Armstrong and getting another striker in January will be what defines our season.

I don't think he's ever played as a centre back - I assumed he was cover for Vukcevic.

We have Valentin , Small and Offiah who can play that role..

We have or at least hopefully will soon again have Valentin and if he regains both fitness and match sharpness Potts though I would not want us to stand in his way if another club were to come in in January and offer him a deal beyond the end of this season. But Small is out-of-position on the right where he is unable to use his pace because he has to stop and cut in and defensively confused - he is much diminished compared to how he plays when on the left. Offiah for his part is a defender who is showing genuine character in playing in a position that doesn't suit him - he does well sometimes noticeably so in the defensive side of the role but rarely beats a man when trying to attack.

I have got some flak here for suggesting other possible alternatives but as I keep stressing anyone we play in that right wing-back role in the absence of Valentin and Potts will be a stopgap. Offiah probably is the best option if the main requirement is defensive but if we are looking to be more attack-minded then I would be interested to see how Devine might perform there an option that might free up a more central role for Frokjaer to add further creativity. In short we do need to think of bringing in a further right wing-back in January.

How's he confused defensively on the right?

Cannon starting for Sheffield United which is a surprise considering he couldn’t make the bench at the weekend. Last chance saloon you feel.

I still think he’ll end up here in January.
Just been subbed. Got a decent reception from the Sheff Urd fans, but he was pretty ineffective to be honest.

Offiah like any wingback needs the support of a strong RCB to be attacking and in Storey he hasn’t got that. All is well when the opposition don’t have an attacking threat down the right but if they do even Pol struggles (eg Monga Leicester and Dembele QPR …..) Offiah should be playing RCB driving forward the wingback to attack. How you can suggest Devine in the engine room! that’s a wingback baffles me when Devine can barely get through 90 mins🤷‍♂️!!
