As a Paul McKenna fan even I recently questioned, after a noticable dip in form, if he had lost his desire to keep the North End midfield together.

In recent weeks he has almost single handedly kept our midfield engine room going. Chaplow still looks way off the pace and McKenna does a lot of the hard graft needed in the centre of the park. Paul looks back to near his best form. A minority on this forum (and we all know who they are !) seize every opportunity to 'have a go' at McKenna and these people see no good in North End's current longest serving player. I find this bewildering. He is PNE through and through and he will know he has the backing and full support of North End's most knowledgeable fans - those that choose to often target McKenna need to take a closer look at the standard of player playing alongside him and realise just how lucky we are to have such a gifted player in our midfield. If we were to uncover another 'Sean Gregan' type player to play alongside Paul I feel confident of us reaching the Premier League.

McKenna is a quality player and his loyalty and graft for the PNE ought to be more widely acknowledged. Along with Mawene he was excellent today and was deserving of yet another Man of the Match Award. Keep up the good work Paul.

Been saying this for a while, we need a new Gregan. A bit of aggression in the Midfield, and force of personality to drive the rest on

At home there is not need to change anything, Away from home, with a 'Gregan' we could get an automatic place.

I agree 100% but unfortunately it isn't ony him who certain posters have A GO AT. Silly people, or just on an ego massage I don't know but hey it takes all kinds. Good post m8

Im not having a ego massage, but Mckenna was far from captain marvel, did very little, passed the ball backwards and sideways alot, and Mawene was far more the MOTM.

The people who think the sun shines out of Mckenna's arse are worse then the people who constantley slag him off!

Mckenna was the best defender Ipswich had! He broke down every "forward wave" we had by stoping the ball, turning around and passing backwards! He is the most negative player in the football league.

It is an enigma why our managers played him every match but no other managers have ever come in for him in his entire playing career. Its obvious to me.

hes a good player. but lets not pretend that

a) hes hasnt played poorly for long periods in the past (something your post alludes to in fact despite you trying to belittle fans who've criticised him) and

b) that just because hes still here it means hes loyal. There have been enough rumours of his wanting a move to suggest theres some truth in it.

good player, and some criticisim has been OTT. but some has been justified.

I couldn't of put it better myself.

Great post.

We do need another central midfielder. Even if Chaplow's form is down to fitness, we still need someone who can see the season out.

Nonsense.... If you really cant see how well hes doing of late its a poor do. Even one of my 'gang' who is by no means a kenna fan, has given him credit, believe me, thats high praise indeed!!

Ps i thought Youl just edged him for MOM today.

McKenna and Mawene were our best 2 players yesterday.

Although I agree McKenna has been relatively poor for long periods I must stress the word 'relative' - as his worst hasn't been as bad as the poor form Chaplow, Nicholson, Carter, Nicholls etc

Not only is criticism of McKenna sometimes warranted, it's also necessary to prevent him from regressing back into his comfort zone.

I thought he played well yesterday, especially as Chaplow is now looking like a very average going-through-the-motions midfield player worth nowhere near the amount of money we paid for him.

However, I still believe that this is the last season for McKenna as a meaningful contributor - he still doesn't provide enough for me to be considered a major player in a top six Championship team.

If he continues to play as he did yesterday away from home though, I'll applaud him for finally proving me wrong (in the short-term at least!)

McKenna and Mawene were the best players at Reading as well. The weakness is not McKenna, its some others who dont step forward when he occasionally has a dip. Someone needs to next Saturday - lets hope.

As someone who has an instinctive understanding of the game i always see things one step ahead of play and can recognise Mckennas failings. When the ball comes to him i can spot the ball that needs to be played to open up the oppo which he never plays. He passes it to the nearest teammate quite often playing them into trouble. This is not 'ball retention' it is playing selfishly dropping a colleague in it to save himself looking bad.

Rather than slagging off my opinions maybe you should start picking my brains as its not often average fans like yourselves have the opportunity to debate with someone as informed as myself.

Its a lot easier to see the correct pass when youre not on the pitch. Lets face it were all world beaters off it. Fact of the matter is he's been playing consistently well of late and is one player most managers in the league would rather have on their side, hes a constant thor n to most other teams.

Agreed.

And there was someone on the Phone-In on Radio Lancs after the game - who made the Very Important Point that------Chaplow hastles and jostles an opponent-with-the-ball - but only Very Rarely actually lunges to make THAT Timely Tackle....preferring to Just put the Guy Off , instead.

C'mon Chappers - get that ball WON .
