Suprised about Smyth. I know the lad, and Preston was the first club he played for I think, and he only joined us about 2 years ago as a striker. Good, good player.

Simply going off something Irvine said at the North Lancs forum last July - when asked about the lack of players coming through from the youth team, he stated that there wasn't any of the current youth squad anywhere even near to getting in the first team. Whether or not he felt any had the potential to be challenging in the future wasn't discussed

If any of my lads made the grade and man U, any of the bin dippers or Bolton or the Plastics came knocking on the door then Preston wouldn't even get a look in.

I don't buy that excuse so easily, I know we're in a populated area with big clubs around us but we should do better.

Burnley have had Richard Chaplow and Chris McCann come through their system. Jay Rodriguez seems to be on the fringes of their first team now too. Not to mention Neal Trotman who although they did let him go, is somebody we've paid 500k for.

Even looking below us at clubs like Crewe. They are a small club who know this and have therefore styled the club on their youth system. When you look at the players they've brought through you could probably get a Premiership one to eleven.

Hell even the third club on merseyside Tranmere and made two Premiership players in Koumas (Wigan) and Taylor (Newcastle).

Hopefully with the likes of Mayor, Barton and Collins to name but three, we could but looking at a much better output in the next few years.

was jackson after Langmead? I know they werent far away. I seem to remember he scored in a league cup match against Leicester I think. He was always more highly rated then Langmead, but Langmead always struck me a more likely to make it, for his size and build more then anything.
