Expect more of this from Tony Cascarino and Chris Kamara...
Because we are the "little club", even smaller than Burnley as this would suggest...
Will it be Burnley, Preston, Reading or Sheffield United joining Birmingham and Wolves in the Premier League and who will survive for more than one season?Birmingham City had to wait until the last game of the season to secure promotion to the Premier League. Burnley, Reading and United will join Preston in a winner takes all play off. The winner gets the rights to play in the coveted Premier League and will also walk away with a bonus of £50M to help buy players, invest in the infrastructure of the club so they are better equipped to fight the survival battle in the toughest league in the world.
The play-off games are always highly charged and played with such passion and intensity. There is no room for error. Preston were the most unlikely of the teams to make it to the play-offs but with their current confidence they have an outside chance of beating the gritty, never say die Sheffield side. Reading looked like they were heading for automatic promotion but a string of poor results in the last few weeks of the season spoilt the party. Will they be able to find their form against a lively young Burnley side that rise to the occasion under these play off conditions? The fate of the winner will be decided at Wembley on 25th May. Anyone prepared to stick their neck out and name the winner?
It does not seem at all comprehendible that people should be debating next season’s relegation possibilities but the knives are already out looking to name the lame ducks of next season’s Premier League. From past season’s experience it has the newly promoted clubs that provide some of the names for relegation the following season. This season the writing is on the wall for WBA with Hull living dangerously. Stoke were almost consumed by the task but have just managed to stave off the big drop. So what are the prospects for the new boys? Birmingham have been there, done that in 2007 and will be careful not to repeat the same mistakes. Goals have been a problem so manager Alex McLeish will have some wheeling and dealing to do to correct this. Wolves had a solid season playing with fluency and grit but manger, Mick McCarthy needs to look to add one or two experienced heads to go with the youth he already possesses. If Burnley makes it, their cup exploits against Premier League opposition suggest they can handle the pressure. Their ability to play free flowing football will make them very watchable. Sheffield United have the battling qualities which could see them picking up enough points against the other out of form sides. In the unlikely event of Preston playing in the Premier League they will have to produce a rabbit out of the bag to survive.
Now is the time for any brave supporter to share your thoughts about the survival potential of your side in next seasons Premier League. Who will remain up and who will bounce straight down?
