Matchday Thread Hull City v PNE - 21/04/25 - KO:3PM - Championship (Gentry Day)

This is where I don’t get what’s going on. We’re missing McCann, Ledson, Potts and Holmes from that midfield earlier in the season. Any of them should have walked straight into that team if available.

So if Ledson is fit, why’s he not in the team, or the squad at least?

If it’s sewn up that he’s going to Wigan, are we not playing him for fear of injuring him? Has he fallen out with the manager and got himself sidelined?

Either way, he should have been playing and needs to be starting in the final two games. Put all the other stuff to one side when you’re in a relegation battle.

It’s just rank incompetence to not have him included when you’ve got Mawene, Kamara and Carroll filling squad spaces.

I am not, for one second, suggesting that we have played well recently; our performances and effort levels have been awful. However, how many times have we been screwed by the officials this season? It’s beyond a joke. Say what you like about the performance, but that penalty decision changed the game again today. If QPR go down to 10 on Friday do they go onto win the game? We’d be comfortably safe by now if the refs were anything near competent.

We can’t rely on refs to save us though, we have had shit luck but we should be playing at a level where one shit decision doesn’t cost us the entire game. Too often it has, because we rarely get more than a goal ahead.

It’s always the unlucky clubs at the bottom of the league ! 🤷‍♂️

I think he’s supposed to be injured?

Enough said .
It's 3 league wins with Whiteman starting (out of our 10 league wins in total).

For added context, it's 2 league wins with Potts starting, 2 league wins with Brady starting, 4 league wins with Ledson starting, 4 league wins with Greenwood starting, 7 league wins with McCann starting, 9 league wins with Mads starting, 9 league wins with Thordarson starting.

(These stats take no account of if/when they were subbed etc.)

Maybe when he’s been told about the contract decision he’s said that his hearts not really in to playing any more games for us?
Perhaps it would have been better saying contracts would be discussed after the last game.

And if we hadn’t dropped 26 points from winning positions then we would be in the top six

120 seconds before the first penalty, we had a throw in taken by Kes deep in front our supporters end, within 3 touches Mads had 'passed' it out from 5 yards, shocking!
Hull take that throw ad hey bingo go up to our box ,apply pressure, and well , there you go.
That for me is an absolute joke, I have banged on about these our throws after virtually every fixture I witness.
Clueless springs to mind or sheer lazy coaching.
Point is, make it difficult for the opposition to have of reclaiming the ball from our advantage ,
As Mr Clough quoted , 'biggest crime in the game is to give that ball away, treat it like a loved one'

Not stats that @ 'sports rehab' will like. 😉

Yep, we wait and wait, and faff and faff, then still end up losing possession anyway.

What concerns me is that PH keeps picking Whiteman both for the team and as captain when he clearly lacks any leadership qualities whatsoever. That’s been the biggest issue for me, we have no leaders on the pitch so as soon as things start to against us, we just capitulate.
Who would you play instead with McCann, Potts and Ledson injured?

You are correct, he’s not had much choice.
However he still insists in playing Whiteman in the central role in front of the 3 centre halves.
That should be Thors spot every time he’s fit and push Whiteman to the top right were at least he might be forced to look for more forward passes

The further forward you play, the fewer options there are for forward passes, as there are fewer of your own players in front of you.

FWIW I don’t think Whiteman makes our XI when everyone is fit, but to watch that today and come out of it thinking that the issue was Whiteman and not passing forward then it’s just pre-conceived agenda driven guff.

Another lifeless performance. It really is hard to get up and behind them - there seems so little urgency and creativity coming from the pitch.
Not as bad as last week in my view , but still looking a weak team. Meghoma , Storey, Mads and Thor didn’t look up to this level against a very weak hull team who never looked like scoring bar the dodgy penalties.

We are not going down, I am confident of that, but big warning signs for next season.

A major concern of mine is the style of football we play, and the difficulty we are going to have changing it. We don’t have any attacking width , so if we were to move to a 4-2-3-1 we are looking at recruiting 4 wide players for squad depth. After the Bowler experience, that is going to be nigh on impossible. I can see us stuck with wing backs again. We got lucky with Kkh, but meghoma , who will be a good player in a couple of years but is miles off at the moment , shows the risks of trying to get wing backs in.

It’s clearly time for a new CEO , rarely do they hang around this long in any business, success or failure , I have had a theory for awhile that we recruit managers to suit the squad we have, not the squad we want. Ironically I feel the more abuse that gets hurled his way, the more likely he is to be here next season. Craig Hemmings strikes me as the sort of person who is happy putting the money in, but doesn’t want the spotlight on him , and is happy to have an extremely thick skinned CEO taking the flak when things go wrong . I don’t share others desire for a change in ownership. We have rich, local, and genuine supporters owning the club. With 95% confidence I can say our next owners will be far less desirable , at least to me - just look around at who has taken on Blackpool, Wigan, Bolton, Huddersfield etc.

The issue is Thor being constantly played out of position in preference to Whiteman who as you say wouldn’t make our 1st eleven if everyone is fit.
With regards to Whiteman not looking forward enough unfortunately its an issue in most games he starts.
