Ledson

Ledson

Do you not think the criticism both Alan Browne and Ben Whiteman have received in their roles as captain is indicative of how few leaders we have in the team?

Yeah, that's a good point to be fair but this is present day with a new manager at the helm.
Whiteman, if he's gonna be an ever present, simply needs to become more vocal, especially in instances such as yesterday.
Sometimes I forget he's even actually on the pitch!

Ledson is on his 7th season, 4th manager and no one can really say with confidence what his qualities are.

Had Harrop here for 6 years, Maguire for 6 and Ledson potentially 9/10 if he signs a new deal. And people question why we’ve stagnated so badly.

Mediocrity gets rewarded with long term deals. Much rather use the squad place on someone younger and more dynamic. Not like we’d be losing much even if they were a complete flop
The same stasis applies to our dogshit defence as well.

We were told that all the leaders had stepped up over the summer...

In all seriousness though, it's not just Whiteman. I feel this is where Browne and Cunningham step up last season. Years before that Tom Clarke, Huntington etc. We seem to be lacking leaders in the team just generally.

We had plenty of awful performances last season with Browne and Cunningham in the squad!

Correct and historically we have had terrible performances with leaders in the side (as I mentioned yesterday, we did throw away a 3-0 lead against Chesterfield under Grayson).

But it was evident on the pitch that there was a lack of trust and responsibility given to the players as the manager would rant and rave during every phase of play. Heckingbottom gives a little more trust to his players, meaning they have a bit more accountability. Moreover, I don't recall any situations under Lowe where we threw away a 3 goal advantage (because we never got into a situation where we would create so many chances). We had awful performances because they were dictated by Lowe. Yesterday we were great until a loss in concentration, that feels like requires more on the pitch issue.

When we were on bad form around November to January, we had a mild recovery after and it was made clear at that point that there were player meetings going on. I would presume they were led by Browne and Cunningham. On the pitch I saw Cunningham guide some players through matches. I don't see that now. I'm not suggesting either of those two are up there with Chris Lucketti, Tom Clarke, Paul McKenna or Graham Alexander, but they did more noticeably try to set a standard than this current collection.

Browne got shit when his form was shocking and he started dishing it out to fans. When he played well, the fanboys and the non fanboys were all big fans. I'm in the latter category but I think he was an excellent captain and it's the leadership as much as anything we have missed.

Whiteman really looks like a man who does not want to be captain. I said at the time I'd have given it Lindsay and I stand by that. I'm not a huge fan of his either

He’s a liability, just a walking yellow card and needs moving on. If Hecky is to build a decent Championship side, this is one of the players that can make way - been here long enough now and isn’t going to get much better.

I’d put Ledson in for Whiteman against Arsenal

Played well against Fulham, and it’s easier to leave Whiteman out and it be classed as rested if it’s in the cup.

He wants to be captain for sure. Thing is - he is not captain material - and the burden of the responsibility is affecting his play.

He's been mediocre for most of the last couple of years, captain or not.

Personally I think the role of captain on matchday is massively over-blown. The bits we don't see through the week are probably more important.

Bollocks. Many have been slagging him for months, yourself included if I'm not mistaken.

Mmm, I’m not sure about that….

I don’t think I have ever been that vocal about Whiteman.

I may have commented on the odd performance but I certainly have never piled on him constantly
