PNE-Online and Mental Health

Hey... Sorry for late reply.
I got a book Free yourself from Anxiety.
Its a bloody eye opener... Full of stuff thats me down to a t.
Citalopram is up to 20mg per day but apparently thats a low dose.
When I'm fine you would have no idea of my issues, genuinely I'm perfectly ok.
This winter time, dark nights, bad weather just crushes me, i long for feb / march when the lighter nights start, its like a switch being turned off.... April to sept i am fine..... I dread the clocks going back... Its absolutely stupid i know but i never asked for this, anyway.. Cheers for taking an interest. Hope you are ok too.
It`s not stupid mate, SAD is a condition at this time of the Year.
My Dad died a few years back in the month of October and it always sets me off when the clocks go back.

Little things like when it gets to 21st December the Day length starts to get longer, not much granted but it helps me.

Take care mate.

Yes, 20mg is low. If issues persist, you can go higher. Seasonal depression is real and terrifying. I don't get it myself but do feel better in the summer of course, but I've witnessed it first hand.

That's exactly how depression works, and why it's key to take it seriously. One trigger is all it takes to set it off, and seasonal depression makes it so much worse. However, the winter solstice is coming, and after that it gets better.

Good luck with your battle against depression, you'll win.
I was wondering about this. Looking at the MIND website it looks as though those with depression/anxiety are prone to SAD. I wonder if trying to tackle some of the symptoms of depression/anxiety through pharmacology/counselling can alleviate symptoms of SAD, or looking at it another way if the changes in light and temperature that come with SAD are pushing the mind over the edge? Good luck to you all anyway. Hopefully it's a mild winter and we can all get out and about.

The long, dark winters nights don't help at all, get as much daylight into your eyes as you can, this helps a lot, similar sort of theory to a light box which SAD sufferers use. I loathe the long winter nights & can't wait until January when the nights start getting lighter by 2 mins a day, Roll on Spring & Summer, then (hopefully) with the oncoming vaccinations 🤞 we will all have more freedom to go places to stop the rot. Hold on tightly, because we will get there eventually, look after yourself buddy 👍

Just something to add as SAD's come up. I've always got very very down over winter, to the point where when it's got bad it's pretty much unbearable. Last year I started taking Vitamin D over the time where the clocks have gone back. Also made lots of lifestyle changes and had a better year in general so no idea whether it's down to the Vitamin D but I did feel better. As I say no idea if it's a placebo or if it'd work for everyone but the NHS recommends Vitamin D over winter if you're prone to feeling low during this time of year and they're like 3 quid for 100 so maybe something that's worth trying if anyone's struggling. No guarantees it'll do anything but can't hurt f you're looking for summet to try.

As we once again find ourselves in lockdown and further uncertainty is added to many of the lives of our forum members we would just like to remind you all that we have a Mental Health section on the forum.

One of the big things that sets PNE-Online aside from our contemporaries is that despite our many differing views on a wide range of topics we always come together for each other when needed and we aren't aware of any other football forum with a section dedicated to the mental well-being of its members.

If you wish to post under your usual name that is fine or if you would prefer a level of anonymity you are able to log out and post in that section as a guest.

All we ask is that, no matter how big or small a poster's issue seems to you, that any replies are done so with respect and without fear of recrimination.

Keep safe everyone.

The PNE-Online Moderation Team

I find this posting well founded but entirely untrue, maybe even a little hypocritical. Time after time on PNEOnline members are slagged off for having a different opinion with no thought given as to how the person being slagged off is feeling. With no thought given to what a person is going through, it seems if a poster holds a different opinion to yourselves then instead of understanding a different opinion may be held it seems quite right to slag off that person - even cruelly make fun of them - and for others to join on the side of the person doing the slagging off with agreements and emoticons. That is why I rarely post on here anymore because I have enough to put up with (I'm a cancer patient and going blind) which does not help with my mental state of mind and my ability to take being slagged off. I'm afraid paddysr that before your idea can be put into effect then the forum needs to be cleaned up resulting in a greater respect for poster's views.

I understand your point but I do disagree.

Irrespective of how people behave with each other when they disagree over politics or football when it comes to personal matters posters are very much supportive of each other.

It may appear hypocritical on the surface but I truly believe that messages of support and assistance are well intended and genuine.

The way people are slagged off on this forum shows how people disrespect other people on this forum. That disrespect is a personal attitude and affects personal matters such as how the recipient feels. It does not matter what the subject matter is - be it football, politics or a discussion about life. The way people talk to each other on this forum needs to greatly improve because at the moment it is unnecessarily disgusting at times. It is time people replied to posts on this forum that they disagree with by not being rude and disrespectful. That way their comments on this thread will be taken at face value and believed by those of us undergoing cancer treatment and the onset of blindness with the mental trauma it brings.

Disagree.

There are plenty of people on this forum that I have had disagreements with and some who's views I outright don't like.

However when I posted on the Mental Health section about an issue that was bothering me recently, I felt supported, respected and valued.

I dont feel that I need to respect or agree with somebodies views on football or politics to respect them as a person or to be there for them in their struggles. Nor do I expect all of my views to be respected.

In short I feel that the Mental Health areas of this forum are a great asset to us as a community and should be utilised by all who may need them.

Having to spend this Xmas stranded and alone in London because of the announcement today, having intended to head back up North on Xmas Eve. It fucking sucks to be honest. I suppose I’ll finally know what it feels like for those really unfortunate people who regularly spend Xmas in solitude.

It’s been a completely shattering last couple of months on a personal level due to the occurrence of a truly ugly incident and this has really compounded things. This was the one Xmas where I really wanted to be around my immediate family so that we could offer each other some support but it is not to be.

Hope there aren’t too many others on here in the same position.

Good luck pal. Hopefully this virus will be got rid of as soon as possible so we can all get some normality.

To add to this, it’s amazing how much of an impact vitamin/mineral deficiencies have on the body and your well-being. Vitamin D, Zinc, Magnesium and a whole range of other minerals are hugely important (zinc especially in Men). Anyone feeling low/lethargic I’d recommended investing in a quality A-Z supplement + zinc and maybe cod liver oil. Take the recommended dose and give it a couple of weeks and you should feel brighter.

Not to say this is a fix but it certainly gives you an extra 10%. I’ve taken the above for about 3 months and it’s the first time in years I’ve not had a single cold (although working from home is a huge factor in this too) - so even if your sceptical about what it can do for your mental health, it will boost your immune system at the very least.

Do your own thing fella and ignore the restrictions... Travel home.

I just think it’s a touch irresponsible mate. I have a mum who’s over 60 and has heart problems (albeit mild) and she’s already been through enough this year. COVID would be the final nail.

I’m also in the epicentre of it down here as well. Good chance I could catch it between now and Xmas, especially given I work in retail at the moment.

Fair enough mate... I've an 80 year old mum that i visit for a few hours every Sunday, I / she haven't taken any notice of the advise... Yes it's probably irresponsible but life has to go on....Best of luck fella.

I agree to a point as at times I find myself posting on here at times when I am at my lowest and not leaving the villa and it then gets too much with the group bullying and back against the wall for having an alternative opinion. I then dissapear as quickly as I find it makes things worse or attempts are made to get me banned. At times having a chat and having an opinion is something we all need to get by but sadly the forum at times has a bully culture.

It’s disgusting really when no one knows what you have going on in your life...

When times are good I am out enjoying and experiencing life... full national lockdown again finds me with a quiet Xmas ahead...

But yes besides the same few bullies when it comes to a mental health discussion people are supportive. I just think others need to realise that you don’t just need to be opening up about mental health on the forum to actually be suffering...

And then I hope I never have to experience being ridiculed for having once opened up previously to posters. That was the lowest of the low.

So I get your point but also feel that other than one poster in the whole others are supportive.
