Might be wrong but I always thought that players were free to discuss contracts with other clubs in the last 6 months of their deals. Maybe he already has something lined up elsewhere and that's why we aren't bothering to offer him anything.

Yep. Spot on (from what my ‘source’ (I feel like Fabrizio Romano) has told me).

He told the club in November last year that he had no intention of signing a new deal.

He had approaches in January (I have no idea who from) so I imagine he’s already got multiple offers on the table and he’s just taking his time to decide.

I imagine that could change if we do (somehow) go up though.

Question is, if you're DJ do you go and sign for another club or do you get a 2/3 year deal on reduced terms?

He knows the club, will be embedded in the area and the grass isn't always greener.
I doubt he'll stay. At 30 this is probably his last chance to get a 2/3 year deal on a higher wage. An extra £5000 per week on a 2 year contract is an extra half a million pounds for him and his family, and if he doesn't take it now he probably won't have a chance at earning money like that again in his life. Would love him to stay and feel like part of him probably wants to, but just can't see it happening myself.

If that's true then fair fucks to him giving it 110% of late, would have been easy for him to sit on his behind and do the square root of nowt.

Whatever happened to 'Utility' players? As a kid, PNE would often sign a 'utility' player on loan, who could cover, say, left back, left mid and centre back or whatever. Nowadays these players are classed as square pegs in round holes. Or, if they're lucky, 'versatile'.
Love those types of players, they can just excell in all areas of the pitch, really hard to find though,

Even a playoff spot at the end of the season could convince him to stay, we haven't achieved that in the 8 years we have been up in the championship, maybe would convince him that we are progressing even though investment is still desperately needed in this squad.

I'll throw this one out there...

We're apparently looking to add a "maverick" to the squad this Summer. Someone who can take players on and run with the ball. Someone with Championship experience. We know we're likely looking at a free transfer or ideally a loan with minimal contribution. Possibly someone who made a bad career choice, unwanted by his club and would need a fresh start to recapture old form. Youngish with sell-on potential. A Merseyside connection.

What about taking a punt on...

Mr Joshua Luke Bowler?

He's been shite since he went back to the lashers in January but he's still a very good player imo.

Only problem is that he's a winger and wouldn't fit in Lowe's formation.

I was thinking ditch the crisp packet and have him as a wide/running 10 when we play with a box midfield.

Must have been soul-destroying knowing his only option was to trudge back to that shithole.

I'd agree with that. Think he'd be quite good in that role too. Only issue I seem to find with Bowler is if an opposition stick two on him, he's a one trick pony and very limited.

He's still only 24 though and I can't imagine Forest will keep him round if they stay up.

Thought he was great for Blackpool in the second half against us. Both him and Ian Poveda I’d happily take here.

If he's now signed a pre-contract agreement with a new club he wouldn't be needing to keep himself clear from injuries etc. That must be on players minds as their contracts wind down but maybe he's got his future secured and is free just to play again?

Not a chance..... It doesn't convince me and he probably knows a lot more than I do... I'd keep him all day long but if he's had better offers than he's offski...Promotion would be ( in my view ) the only reason he'd have a rethink but the likelihood of that happening are as realistic as our budget increasing rather than decreasing.. We all see what's coming next season so I'm certain that he does too.

That's only if the other club is overseas/in another country. Like Ben Davies was set to sign a deal with Celtic in January for the following summer. Can't officially do those kind of deals between clubs in the same country until June, I believe

Someone suggested Connor Coady the other day, ludicrous. @Bobbage, you're one of my favourite posters but, this suggestion is just as bad.
Anyone with a modicum of football knowledge knows that the bidding for Bowler will start north of £30 million. Given that our record outlay is less than £2 million, I would kindly suggest that we won't be in the running for his prized signature.

You're right. If that massive club with the best fans in Europe can afford him for half a season, then we have no chance. I'm sure he'll have been woo'd back there permanently for their back-to-back promotion campaigns by all that lovely smooth tarmac they put down when he went away...

Could see us going for Phil Jones, local lad, wont have premiership interest and fits the bill of the RL “lost their way”.

Just a guess, not an opinion on his suitability to us.
Jones was talking to a friend of mine in Dubai last week . He won’t be playing football again . His knees have gone .
