Matchday Thread PNE v Watford - 16/12/23 - KO:3PM - Championship

According to @baysidepne, FFP may be an issue, meaning we can't sack and pay off the entire coaching team and hire another 😕
Given how Peter has mentioned FFP and us sailing incredibly close in recent years, and how many staff would need paying off and subsequent re-hires, I doubt it'll be cheap.

Doesn't mean it won't happen because let's be frank, if he loses these next 3 he simply cannot remain in charge.

Dont be suprised to see him here.

He was the heir, till he didn’t agree with the management and coaching and left.

He was gutted to leave an all.
He strikes me as the type of bloke that will make a quality manager. Intelligent player who immediately stepped into coaching

Probably too early to be manager here but I’d love him back at some point

I can quite easily see us losing the next 3 bay…

Swansea : We never do well at their place, I’m not expecting anything.
Leeds : I am expecting a thumping from one of the best teams in the division
Sheff Weds : Massively improved under their new coach , I wouldn’t be surprised if they won.

I think overall if you look at Lowe -on his appointment he was talking about an attractive wing back style of football etc -which was a mistake as he couldn’t really manage it.Ridsdale I think said at one point Lowe has improved as a manager whilst here(something like that)which implies he’s really learning at this level. But tactically as in second half he’s not astute enough to change things positively when not going well. The overall point I’m making is that it’s a big step up from league1/2 to Championship and managers who have been successful in lower leagues get found out(Simpson at PNE springs to mind).I think the next 3 games are critical and although PNE are 8th at moment Bristol are 14th only 3 points behind. Not beating Swansea and Sheffield Wed will I think result in Lowe’s demise as they are both near the bottom of the league.I would prefer a manager with a track record in the Championship because it’s such a competitive league .

Sunderland away hot in the heels of those 3.

RL's tenure as manager must surely be at an end. Yesterday's second half performance was a disgrace to everything this club is meant to be. That really is all there is to it. Let's hope RL and PR are thrashing out an agreement right now to enable RL to walk away with some dignity at the latest by tomorrow morning. He deserves that much but this week has to see a complete fresh start.
Why does he deserve that much? The man has no dignity; he blames the players at every opportunity. Even yesterday he deflected the boos aimed at him towards 'his' players who did not follow 'his' game plan (the man has a gameplan?).

I was really enjoying the match until the second goal went in. Lowe was fuming at Potts for his meek effort in trying to head the ball after the kick off. I must admit that was Potts worse match for some time and his head went down after that. In fact the whole team looked deflated. Watford in the first half had 4 attackers. It was a joy to watch their quick and slick passing (although we did make it easy for them. As for Lowe I really don’t know. It’s the position in the league that appears to be keeping in his job and I can see us beating Swansea on Friday, losing against Leeds and a win at Sheffield Wed, which will see him till the end of Jan at least.
So he's fuming at Potts for not heading the ball.
Most of us though are fuming at him for the ridiculous set up at the kick off.
He then sets up exactly the same way after conceding.
That is completely unforgivable.
Taxi for Lowe

I watched Swansea yesterday and saw a big improvement under the caretaker manager. Middlesbrough clearly had a plan to exploit Swansea's lack of pace at the back. It's a game made for Riis, Millar and Homes but I fancy we'll park the bus and play for a draw. I was planning on coming up for the Leeds game but with Piroe and James in top form I'm not sure I fancy it.

Spot on Bowland….. he doesn’t know how to change things when things are going wrong…

I hate to think what Leeds and Chelsea will do to us
I would imagine we will now endeavour to "Park the Bus" against both, I think.against Leeds RL will have us set up as we did at Norwich, defending at all cost , 7 at the back and see if we can nick something on the odd breakaway we might have
Chelsea will be similar I'd imagine, damage limitation from the off, with little attacking intent.
We will have to wait and see, but I'd imagine that will be the tactical plan for the two games.🤔

Think we will need the supporters buses as well for Chelsea ?

This is the stupid thing with basing your entire coaching/recruitment structure around a manager and his friends. Managers are only at clubs for a short period of time, if things go wrong you're just throwing money down the drain. It's like letting a contractor be in charge.

If we had a director of football in, they could pick which fitness coaches we hire or which scouting team we hire, etc. I get Lowe having his own assistant manager and maybe coaches but Lowe has brought everyone in.

Just to reiterate how short term-ist an approach it is, Lowe is the 2nd longest serving manager in the Championship and he's only been here 2 years and 9 days

The set up against Leeds an Chelsea plus I might as well say Swansea, wouldve been the usual, whatever form we were in prior to the games.
Chelsea, a complete carbon copy of the Tottenham tie.
The excitement beckons! 🙄

At times RL has shown some passion and has delivered a few memorable moments even recently like the win at Blackburn unlike, say, the protracted ignominy of the last several months of AN. For that reason I would be prepared to give him and the club just a bit of time to agree some sort of deal. But his time must now be up and if doesn't agree to walk then he must be pushed.

“It’s like letting a contractor be in charge” the whole philosophy throughout the club, whether it’s match day catering, kit supply, club shop provision etc.

Nobody wants to take on the responsibility to build and develop the club, there’s a complete abdication, whilst this sub contract approach continues Risdale always has someone else to blame.

My Dad met Paul a number of times when he worked at North End.
Has nothing but praise for him - an all round top bloke who deserves any success that comes his way.

Best of luck to him.

Not rocket science…we know Watford had a pacey attack so we should have setup 451 with our fastest defender hughes in the middle and Cunningham left back for experience and cos I would rather him than Brady play. Holmes and Millar on the wings to press their wingers back. McCann as the midfield ball winner Browne and Mads in the middle supporting osmajic up front. Why was our fastest defender on the bench??
Holmes ( RW ) and Millar ( LW ) would both be aggressive and provide a good service to strikers Osmajic and Riis ( when he returns )

If Stoke decide to bring in a new manager / coach then maybe we should consider Gally or would it be too big a gamble at this stage of his fledgling career ??

I really don't know how to respond to yesterday's game. I have been saying for months . Win lose or draw. l wanted then to entertain and show some desire and attacking intent, I wanted more shots at goal. Well I got that in spades first half
Second half was beyond comprehension. Stupid formation gifting a goal. Fine doing a mass change after 3 goals but the people and formation did nothing to help in fact made things worse.
.I'm not a Lowe fan but no idea how we change the whole situation and no, I personally doubt he has lost the dressing room as many often claim after each bad result.
I probably still go to Chelsea where I never did expect us to win, just hoping for a performance similar to the first half.
