Matchday Thread PNE v Sheffield Wednesday - 29/12/23 - KO:7:45pm - Championship

That was such a frustrating watch.

Fair play to Wednesday. Game plan executed perfectly.

We just lacked the quality needed. I do think if that Millar strike that came back off the bar is a few inches lower, we'd have gone on and won it, but we didn't. We didn't deserve to with the total lack of any quality in the final third.

Anyone any idea why Keane wasn't on the bench?

Literally the only positive was seeing Riis back on the pitch.

Frustrating sums it up. So does f***ing annoying!

The ref had already booked a SW player for dissent before Potts. No need for the players to get dissent bookings.

I don't think Rebecca Welch was anywhere near as bad as people are making out. I liked how she was refereeing the game. It wasn't stop start and I think she was giving what she saw or was advised by the other officials. Nowhere near as bad as people are making out.
Thought the fourth official hid behind his note pad, sat back almost in the stand. Defo didn’t help her.

Whiteman way out of position, jogging back not even noticing their spare man making the run forward for the goal. He cannot play defensive midfield or he just doesn't care any more.
His body language makes you feel he doesn't really want to be part of it, that screams bad management.
These players are better than this shitshow tonight.
Wednesday were poor but good luck to them and their magnificent support tonight.

Ahh she's nothin to worry about.
The assesser in the stands or wherever will do the report an it will be nothin to see here, carry on.
In my opinion, I thought she was a right arrogant....erm person.
Prancing off with her head stuck in the air after another crap decision
Let league 2 put up with her

Yeah agreed. She wasn't good. Thought she let Sheff Wed off without a few yellow cards in 1st half. The red card decision was harsh, too.

Must have been watching a different game but it certainly wasn’t a shit show if you compare it to what we’ve seen recently.

I’m not disagreeing, what I’m saying is people taking a game in isolation to judge a manager is foolish.

The issues we have are historically a lack of funding/being backed. I’m sorry but this window is one of the rare occasions where a manager cannot use that as an excuse.

Tonight wasn’t the worst performance we’ve seen, but it’s the continuation of a long trend.
Also worth bearing in mind we have a near fully fit squad, which has not been the case at this time, most season's

Whiteman has been terrible this season so far. He’s not a defensive midfielder! We need to get a grip in central midfield.
He looks more comfortable further up the pitch. As soon as they swapped him and McCann around, McCann was basically out of the game because he never looks comfortable higher up the pitch. He doesn't know where to position himself but when he plays the defensive midfield role, he actually helps us play it out the back. Whiteman, on the other hand, hovers in one position and allows himself to be marked out of the game. He doesn't move to provide a passing option to our CBs. It's only when we play the 3 at the back that he gets involved in the game because we have enough players back to pass it around to get the ball to him

There were a couple of decisions with regards to fouls on Potts which were highly controversial…one was a penalty that I thought the linesman should have seen.

Just pick one 😉

‘Last one I can think of is Nestor El Maestro. He's an unusual one as he's not actually foreign! He was born in Sussex to Serbian Parents! He is currently managing CSKA Sofia in Bulgaria. They are currently joint top after 19 games with a record of 12W, 6D and 1L. He came on my radar when he was in Turkey as he said something along the lines of 'life is too short to defend in a low block' after his Goztepe side got beat away at Besiktas. Cracking mentality to have imo. Kinda like Ange-Ball’

I've found the interview and one of his quotes was 'The game is about glory, it is about doing things in style and with a flourish, about going out and beating the lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom. Would we concede less if we defended 20m closer to our goal, probably. But life is too short to defend in a low block'.

agree, i think she did alright and tried to let the game flow - if more refs were like her maybe all the pathetic rolling about and acting may stop - there were no nasty tackles, just solid challenges. not much she got wrong for me unilke the scouse wanker as usual.
Potts booking came from pure anger and frustration due to her and the liner between them not giving a blatant foul on him.
The frustration stemming from her missing countless other offences against us yet blowing up for something and nothing for them.
She also made us bring the ball back to take a free kick rather than play advantage when we still had the ball and started a break away.

She was fucking abysmal.

Once again tonight we tried to play every through the wings, most of the time through Millar. Very little went central. Then we punt hopeful balls into the box. It was incredibly predictable and slow.

Millar was nullified out of the game early on. They’d obviously done their homework. Plus, he was outpaced. Personally would have swapped sides of the pitch to get him back in the game.

Lindsay, Holmes and Potts were all poor tonight.

Browne was sat too deep most of the game. Didn’t have great game.

Whiteman has been terrible this season so far. He’s not a defensive midfielder! We need to get a grip in central midfield.

Osmajic first touch is poor. He also does very little to contribute to overall play. Stop playing him on his own!

Evan’s was probably the wrong decision. Really like the guy, but he’s becoming less and less effective overtime.

Is tonight all Lowes fault, no. Could he have done better changing things up during the game, yes. It’s just another nail in the coffin.
Millar was doubled up on, no doubt about that. They still gave him a yard or so to drive right at them on some occasions
For some reason, he didn't or was told not to do that.
Instead he'd come inside more often than not am just lay it off an then usually the move just fizzled out.
What's the worst that could happen? He loses the ball? He gets tackled? He makes something happen.

Sorry but have to disagree. My biggest issue with the way she refereed the game was that she rarely moved away from a line down the middle of the pitch. As a result missed countless fouls (for both sides in fairness), turned her back on play and ended up losing more control of the game. Not the reason we lost of course.

He didn't have the pace to just drive by their lad Valentin. If they're doubling up on him, it's the rest of the team's job to take advantage of the extra man.

It's no coincidence that his best effort came after a rare Browne drive into the area, committing defenders first and giving Millar some freedom to work.

Hopefully we can sign a couple of gems in a few days either on loan or permanently and we can recover some consistency having Riis back is like a new signing though I’m not expecting miracles I suppose I’m trying like to find a glimmer of hope go forward 🤷🏼‍♂️

I hope they take half our first team squad with them on their way out.

Consistently inconsistent. Lacking mental strength. Lacking motivation and self belief. Lacking ability. Lacking ambition. Often lacking application & effort. Lacking determination. Lacking pace. Lacking creativity.

Guess that's why they're at PNE, because we're a perfect match.

As a general rule, you get what you pay for. No manager at PNE will get their ideal first choice targets.

Any manager, whoever they are, can't polish a turd. They can roll it in glitter, which will hide it for a while, but that's all.
