Matchday Thread PNE v Middlesbrough -14-02-24 - KO:7.45PM - Championship

Was like an early season game wasn't it? Played hardly any decent passing moves for pretty much the whole game bar Mads hitting some nice through balls near the end but a couple of shots and that was enough to win a very crucial three points.

Boro are decent but they just lack the firepower they had this time last season. With even one of Akpom or Archer they'd probably be in the play offs bur mid table season for them now.

Big game on Saturday. Think team will be changed a bit as Hughes will be a big doubt and Whiteman was limping when he came off so think that will be starts for McCann and Whatmough. Hopefully Potts will be o.k just to push Millar back into the final third more regularly.

What a strong old season this is turning out to be....

Big three points which was hard fought with chances taken.

Beat the plastics on Saturday & we might even have a glimpse upwards a little.

Hopefully injuries don't cause us issues, must be hard work on the heavy pitch.
Glimpse upwards? We're level points with 6th, we could be 6th and a point off 5th by Saturday evening. Come on JK, surely he deserves a little credit and acknowledgement for the turnaround?

It's three points, we were gritty, finished the two goals very well and we've now won three in a row. That's some big positives right there.

But it's very hard for me to enjoy the football on show. It feels like this squad has more to offer than these tactics are allowing.

But with the likes of Riis, Keane & Millar we know we have guys who can score goals. It's the general quality of passing which frustrates me. We really make hard work of things.

Just hope these mounting injuries and our cost neutral January, aren't gonna really hurt us in the coming weeks. But no matter what we should go into the Rovers game on a high.

I am giving him credit, didn't see this run of results coming but since half time against Bristoll City the philosophy seems to have changed a little.

I was actually looking forward to the match tonight for the first time in a while.

I am not going to get carried away just yet as it is so tight between about 6 teams.

Plastics then Coventry away, Hull home then Southampton away a huge 4 games that will give us an idea of where we will end up.

Oh yeah I'm with you, I'm just enjoying the fact we're back in with a shout because the season felt over after Swansea.

Nothing wrong with the tactics tonight, generally did our best to attack when we could, we just aren't very good at it. With perhaps the exception of Mads and Keane we are just deeply average as a team when we have the ball. Unsure if that's a lack of ability or poor coaching, probably a bit of both.

But by hook or by crook we got the result and are somehow still in the frame. What we do have is guts and effort.

I agree we need Millar back on the left and Brady off, but Browne has been in great form in the middle of the pitch so why ship him off to right back when we have a right back on the bench…
Whatever Browns attributes are, and he has quite a few, a quick give and go is not one of them. He seems to dwell on the ball too long and either gets tackled or the prospective recipient has then be marked. Maybe next time Lowe watches Liverpool he can take Brown with him to see how it's done.

We will take the 3 points and move on . I have a feeling Browne was playing with an injury today. Looked miles off it . Mads was done after about 55 mins . They had all the midfield . Acres of room . Not sure how the boro havent got anything out of that . Brady was decent . We was better defensively when whatmough came on . Not sure how Freddy got man of the match . His kicking was atrocious. Good couple of saves though.

just hope we have enough bodies for rovers
