Matchday Thread PNE v Huddersfield Town | 08.08.26 | KO: 3PM | League Cup 1st Round (Goodison Park)

PH got lucky today by the skin of his teeth.

Highlight was the £3-80 Guinness and Stella plus being sat / stood in the sun shine the entire game.

Where do we go from here?

The club is a complete mess right now.

And Captain Fantastic should give up the armband after today - McCann or Hughes to take over.

We played pretty decent for 70 minutes of that game. And we had ten men for a lot of it.

A brilliant change at HT bringing Lindsay on. Not because it’s Lindsay, but because it meant we could push Hughes on and aim for him from goal kicks to actually get us up the pitch. Despite what people want to think, it’s very hard to progress the ball fluidly up the pitch when you have a man less.

There was absolutely nothing ‘lucky’ about that.

Just having more height in general mattered. Wasn't sure which side he would change, but convinced Vuk isn't fully fit so made sense to do it that way.

Also great performance from the manager who was getting a lot of stock on here team talk & subs did the job credit were credit is due

Lol we had our first shot on target 86 mins in and a lucky last second equaliser against a horrid league 1 team

But now suddenly the manager deserves praise

Well that was something close to the proverbial daylight robbery. We have to be honest and admit that we did not play well - just lumping the ball upfield - but on the few occasions we got the ball in the ground and played in something like a pass and run style we did show some flickers of creativity.

Now I will say it again we will get nowhere by just sticking wingers on the outside of the turgid, pedestrian central midfield we put out today. We absolutely need a player there who can drive forward with the ball and play a decent pass. I said at halftime that we needed to replace Thompson with Moran and I do have to ask why it took to the 90th minute for Hecky to see that.

Plus points well I suppose we showed some fight and Erabi looks good.I will look forward to the highlights because I have to admit I could not watch the Burgzorg penalty. Well a feeling if relief that as late as the third of four minutes of added time I did not think I would be feeling.

Funny game, is football. Reading the comments on here, it's like the end of the world, then we're suddenly nailed on to go to Wembley and win the thing.

Too nice a day to sit in front of the telly, but saw the last 10 plus pens. Thought we did ok, and commentators mentioned a couple of times that we'd fought well after going a man down. Erabi and Burgzorg have a decent look about them. Cup ties v lower opposition are never easy, everyone wants the underdog to do well. Felt a bit for Leddo missing his penalty.

Still not quite sure how Hughes (great servant, but getting on a bit) and Lindsay (gets a lot of stick but I'll love him for ever for scoring the winner at Ewood a couple of seasons ago) are still the core of our defence. Would really like to see a new RB soon.

As for Gibbo.... He's a long way from the "new Gregan" at the moment. Hope he gets back his mojo soon...

Why would Huddersfield be a league 1 relegation side? They're joint 4th favourites to win it!

And hardly a lucky equaliser, we should have had at least one penalty before that, and we had been putting them under plenty of pressure, with 10 men!

It's a sign of a shallow mind to not be able to reassess your views in the light of new evidence.

Objectively, to fight from 1-0 down with 10 men in 25 degree heat, is top work, hard graft and the players deserve credit.

If Erabi performs like that every week we’ve got a player on our hands, and Bergzorg looks to add something we definitely lack in a bit of confidence on the ball. Also think Offiah is such a top player personally, build that defence around him, wherever you put him. That’s the positives.

Absolutely miles away as a squad though, Thompson cannot be a starting midfielder, I forgot he was on the pitch when he got took off. Need bodies of substantial quality ASAP, because average sides in our division will slaughter us otherwise.

But, fair play to them for that second half, no easy feat at all in this heat.
Thompson was utterly shocking, I really don't get what he's supposed to bring never mind what he actually brings. Amazed it took so long before the manager replaced him with Moran.

We don't need anymore forwards is a big positive. It's strange how the only one who can't see our issue is the one making the decisions. Having said that, he should have brought Lindsay straight on after the brainless moment.

There is only you saying this, I’ve not read it anywhere else, so why are you trying to make out otherwise? Everyone is just relieved we didn’t lose

First half was shocking. Second half not great but much improved.
Nothing ‘lucky’ about the equaliser it was a well worked goal.
We need new signings to bolster the squad.
What we saw of the 2 new strikers was encouraging.
Much work to be done still but at least we didn’t totally fold with 10 men for so long.
