+1/Rep/Digging

I think users should be able to click 'like it' or similar on posts. It's a simple idea, but it works very well at creating a sense of community, which is dying on here.

Either that or turn the reputation system on (I think it comes as default?).

The rep system is attached to a user's profile rather than single posts, so that might be better in terms of longevity.

I think your right, I rated a thread in the PNE discussions and it hasn't appeared with the gold stars.

I think that whole side of it takes up a lot of bandwidth so we've left it off. Might be ok if you've only got a few hundred members, but with the levels of traffic we have we have to watch our bandwidth.
