I think we've had about 10 different variants of our badge on the matchday shirts over the years but I believe that the current one is the first one to have the year of formation on it.

Personally, I'd prefer a badge without the date, primarily because 1880 is nothing to write home about - surprisingly given our history, there's probably 15 to 20 teams older than us in England.

By the way, I'm sure we used to declare 1881 until recently but changed it for some reason?!

My favourite badge was the old 70s PP badge with the light blue background, as below, but I don't think we owned the copyright to it, Preston Council did.

I'm guessing this thread will be too 'anoraky' for many people!

We did say 1881 because we had our centenary game in 1981 against Burnley, a terrible one each with O’Riordan scoring. I’ve no idea why it changed though.

Ian Rigby's Book said the decision was made before a Game against Blackburn Rovers on the 26th March 1881 to fully turn to Football. It was a good job as Preston lost Heavily.

But I think the Club decided that a test Game was the first game, although I believe the earliest game was 1878 involving PNE, but we was a Cricket Club.

You would think it be documented somewhere the exact date.

I think that the club historian ( Ian Rigby ) did some research and found out that we were actually formed as a football team in 1880…

Preston North End were actually founded as a cricket club in 1862, there was a Preston Nelson team.
The Preston North End name was adopted because of the team playing in the North of Preston.

Because we formed as a football club (adopted the rules of association football) in May 1880. North End, along with many others, had got our formation year wrong for many years.

On the 21st January 1875 the club rented a field, part of Deepdale farm and began playing cricket at this new venue.
In 1878 after trying other winter sports to keep players fit out of the cricket season, the club decided to play association football.
On the 5th of October 1878 an exhibition match was played against Eagley with North End losing 1-0.
A meeting was held in the Deepdale Hotel in May 1880 and Preston North End Football Club was founded.

That is my favourite badge, however as I have said on another thread, apart from history, why an overweight lamb, lying down with a smug expression.

Hardly the dynamic for forward thinking, ambitious sporting club.

What is a club badge for a dynamic forward thinking, ambitious football club?

Norwich City have a canary stood on a football, Newcastle have two seahorses aside a black and white shield, Watford have a stag or moose’s head, Cardiff City have a blue and white swift, Southampton have a tree on water with a white flower underneath. Whilst Fulham have FFC in red on theirs, Leeds United have the white rose of Yorkshire above LUFC, BHA have a seagull and Manchester City have a sailing ship on water/sea and the red rose of Lancashire front of the water/sea. Are any of these badges/crests dynamic forward thinking for an ambitious football club?

All those badges are far better than ours. Ours is bloody awful, an embarrassment, as is the name The Lillywhites, just awful (we aren't lillywhite anyway, we're blue and white). I never liked it the first time I realised it was ours, sixty five years ago but you grin and bear it, don't you. A lamb with what looks like a stake through it, I mean wtf ?

There's no evidence (obviously) that it's affected us and held us back, down the years but I would have changed it in the year 2000. I'd have put Finney on there, not Finney the player but Finney the icon, greatest ever, and for that reason it would work, IMHO that is. Doesn't mean I'm right but that's how I feel. Ta ta !

Whatever you think, it’s all about opinion. 👍

The current badge is an abomination. It's dated, lacks quality design, and the font is not set correctly inside the dated scrolls.

Ideally it needs replacing, the PP would be great, and consideration given to either using a slightly tweaked (for copyright) version of the classic badge in post 1, or being professionally redesigned to appeal to a new audience.

Wake up Ridsdale and Hemmings. You did it with Spud Bros.

The scrolls top and bottom Ian are appalling, never like d them. You are quite correct saying it’s dated and lacks quality. Get rid of the scrolls just not required & never have been!
I’m ok with the actual crest, but just keep it plain & simple with a bold PP underneath and that would be ok for me. Simplicity is sometimes best, no need to jazz it up, especially when it’s done and looks unprofessional.

What astonishes me is the amount of people who have never noticed how bad it actually is, or don't care.

When you compare to the designs of other clubs, we are far behind some.

These things matter very much when that is your brand identity, and people buy shirts and other clothing with that badge on.

We even had a badge which was even worse, during the BAXI era, the font was all over the place. Different sized O's in the Preston and North words, for example.

Someone redesigned our badge once, in the same way that the Chelsea and Arsenal badge was re-designed You even get luddites saying you can't do that. Based on what? The dozen odd badges we've had over the years says otherwise.

It's a business and you would hope fans would be happy to wear something that looks good, fresh, cool, if done correctly and incorporates elements of our history, tradition etc

What is probably actually the case is we fear changing the current badges on the stand and various other places.

NB You actually don't need the scrolls, they deliver nothing of interest. The badge is nicer without them.

Badges i like - Bristol City, Oxford United, Derby County, Norwich City, Chesterfield, AFC Wimbledon, Salford, Brighton, Harrogate, Wolves, Forest. All simple.
