Excellent !!!For me I'd rather look at a tomato. In our house only satsumas, clementines and mandarins exist. The T word is forbidden.

It's interesting that - according to Peter - Hughes and Bauer suddenly aren't OoC next summer any more, because when they signed their latest extensions in January 2022 they certainly were - and Peter himself made a point of saying so, contrasting these shrewd new 2-year extensions with the unwise longer extensions he'd given out in the past:
PR: "In terms of Pat and Andrew, they've deserved it. It's interesting we've gone for 2 year deals because some of the longer deals we've done in the past have come back to haunt us, 3 or 4 year deals. They've taken a while because both wanted longer contracts but they were both coming up to 30, and we're happy with the deals that have been done. First of all with the wages [...] and I think the length is right given their age."
That length being "2 years" but simultaneously somehow "not 2 years". 🤷♂️

Surely it's pretty simple. 2 year contract ie wages committed for 2 years with an option exercisable by the club to extend for another year.
If player is not performing they leave after 2 years, if they are the club can choose to extend. (Or if specific trigger clauses eg #games played, extension is automatic)

That's all very possible - but in that case, how can Peter confidently assert (as he did on FTF this week) that e.g. Bauer isn't OoC next summer?Surely it's pretty simple. 2 year contract ie wages committed for 2 years with an option exercisable by the club to extend for another year.

Why describe these extensions as "2-year" (in direct contrast to the bad old 3-4 year extensions) when perhaps they weren't really 2-year?
Why state "the length is right given their age" if the length was in fact unknown at that point?
Why point out the negotiations were arduous because the players "both wanted longer contracts" than 2 years, when in fact the players may well have got longer contracts than 2 years after all?

What is so hard to understand?
It was a two year contract with the club having an option to extend but no commitment to 3/4 year's wages.

Further comment on this one:
th3 2022 deal was a NEW CONTRACT not an extension:

Preston North End are delighted to confirm Patrick Bauer has signed a new contract at the club until at least 2024.
The German defender’s current deal was due to expire in the summer, but he will now stay on at Deepdale for at least the next two and a half years.

That's not an argument- he means the same thing- as in he extended his stay here.
However at least 2024 implies that there may have been an additional year clause activated.

Sounds like it, ashame cause he's contributing naff all and probs on a good wage as previously notedThat's not an argument- he means the same thing- as in he extended his stay here.

Bauer is a decent hard-working defender but it is evident that he is now right at the bottom of RL's selection policies for the defence and it would need three of Storey, Whatmough, Lindsay, Hughes and Cunningham to be unavailable before he might actually start a match. It is quite possible that he will never play another second of league football for us. Whatever his current contract situation it would probably be for the best if he found a new club in the next window - a return to his previous club wouldn't surprise me - to allow us to bring in a much younger player.

Yeah, which if that's the case, it makes PR's pronouncements in January 2022 that "we've gone for 2 year deals because some of the longer deals we've done in the past have come back to haunt us" and "the length is right given their age" was nothing but hot air, and definitely wasn't giving the Butter Pie podcast guys the full story. That's not an argument- he means the same thing- as in he extended his stay here.

Which is my point.

It's a odd choice, to extend the contract of a 6th choice defender, cause you're right, can't imagine he's being paid a pittance.
It’s a long season. No issue for me to have Bauer as back up

The same with the Cornell argument. We need to have back-ups for obvious reasons. If you've got a great pro, who trains hard and is a great leader around the squad irrespective of whether he is playing or not. Why would you let him leave, only to pay more money to sign an unknown quantity?

A fine example of this was Hunts, who worked his socks off at training, rarely played but when he did he nver let us downThis is completely true.

You clearly misunderstand how contract options work.
Try reading this.
What are contract options?
The transfer window is set to kick in but there is one factor in a move that can make or break deals - a contract option. So what are they?
