Much of the debate on here in recent times has (understandably) been about our plight in the Championship. But yesterday's insanity on deadline day left me wondering whether we are falling behind in more ways than that.

You can argue all you want about value for money, and Carroll and Torres in particular look grossly overpriced. But we aren't really competing at all, at any level, are we?

I know that Hemmings doesn't want to throw good money after bad, but our acquisitions in this window have left me feeling very flat. Ashbee, Johnson, Clarke and a barely fit Ellington are not only not the answer but are faded both in terms of ability and reputation.

When, by contrast, you see the Lashers signing Puncheon (a real steal for them, I thought), the very tidy Reid, a Belarussian kid with a decent pedigree and not selling Adam, it makes me want to weep. OK, they had one moment of madness with Beattie, but my source up there tells me they bid £3.5 million for Andy King, ffs.

I don't see any easy way out of this. But we must stay up at all costs, and I'm not really any more hopeful than I was yesterday.

They got approx £90 million for getting promoted via the playoffs...............that is the only reason that they can offer £3.5 million for anyone.

Of course we are getting left behind!

Exactly, and they're hardly pushing the boat out, are they? Andy Reid? James Beattie? Reasonable Championship players at best these days.

Obviously we are getting left behind Blackpool, because of their promotion bounty, but compared to the clubs around us in The Championship, we haven't done too badly in the window. Sheff Utd signed Neal Collins for goodness sake!

I dont think much money is being spent in the championship, even QPR aren't spending that much and they are supposedly one of the richest clubs in the world. There is only Leicester and a select few throwing money around on ski high wages and transfer fees.

I don't actually think the championship is all about throwing money about, it is about making a couple of shrewd signings and building your team around them. We had the chance when we had the likes of Nugent but instead chose to sell him. Blackpool did it with Adam and what you would call an average squad around him, just managed well, Burnley did it with Paterson and Eagles.

The old saying "money is ruining football" couldnt be more true. £50m for Torres and £35m unbelievably for Andy Carroll, the world has gone mad. Give it 5 years time if that and £50m and £35m will be classed as very little and we will be talking about £100m transfers. It will all catch up with itself though and when the arse falls out, football will well and truly suffer at all levels.

Cant blame others millions for all our woes. We've squandered what we had including some core players that could have stayed, and being bottom doesnt attract players either.

Oh the joy, yet another thread by someone who can't grasp who a club adrift at the bottom of the championship can actually attract.

I for one think we have had a very good window, keeping key players, Ashbee and Johnson I think will make an immediate impact (when in the team) and we now have varied choices for strikers, which (being far better defensively recently) should stand us in good stead for the time being, but another couple on loan from next week should so us (hopefully) safe by the end of the season.

Agree completely. The players that Brown & Horton have brought in are a leap ahead IMHO. All things considered, we have made some very good signings. I mean, come on, we have just signed Hull City's Captain FFS! Plus Ellington, Linganzi, Clarke, and a 26 yr old USA international from a Premier League club!!
On top of that, we haven't sold any of our best players.

Totally agree with the above , noticed that we've kept Linganzi coz I thought with him being injured we might send him back , pleased he's stayed and could be our new Etuhu and drive us to safety

Can he drive the bus to away games in the meantime?

I really do hope football shoots itself in the foot. Players and agents in helicopters and private planes being called 'heroes' and many people in this country about to lose their jobs - something is wrong somewhere. Never mind taxing the bankers - tax football.

Grrr grrrr grrrr - blah blah blah!

Anyone with a SKY Sports subscription hang your head in shame.

You are to blame for all this madness

I disagree. The problem really started with the Bosman ruling which gave a disproportionate amount of power to the top players. The result of this means that Sky, Premiership and Champions league money goes straight into the players pockets and not into the game itself.

This is where we find out how good Brown Phil really is. The best managers can take seemingly average players and turn them into a team which is better than the total individual talent of the players.

The problem started in the early sixties when George Eastham won his case in court to be allowed to leave Newcastle to go to Arsenal. That was the key case that gave players the top hand in future relationships with clubs. Prior to that a player could not leave a club without permission.

The abolition of the maximum wage was the next big factor, and I can remember the shock when Tommy Trinder the then chairman of Fulham announced that he had agreed to pay Johnny Haynes the magnificent sum of 100 pounds per week to keep him at Craven Cottage.

That is when all this madness started, and it has got progressively worse and now with Sky pumping in the money, nothing in football makes sense any more.

Spot on Alby, and lets remember our very own Tom Finney wanted to move to italy but in those the days if the club said no, it was no. How things have changed. I remember being staggered at the vast amount birmngha City paid for trevor francis. 100k!
