Hi, my name is Alvaro Cabrera, i'm a journalist from Uruguay and member of the History Society of Club Atlético Peñarol. At the time i'm researching about the lives of the firsts players of the club.
One of them was Percy Davidson Chater, born in 1869 and arrived in Uruguay some time before 1891. Recently i was able to find a publication saying that he played in the youth team of Preston North End with other of the founders of Peñarol called Nugent, and also Henry Stanley Bowles, a legend in the history of uruguayan football. I was searching references of PD Chater and Nugent as players in England but wasn't able to find anything about that.
There is any chance for you to have any information about this people? Previously i try at PNEFCHistory in facebook and email but havent get any response.
Thanks a lot for your attention.
Regards from Uruguay!
Álvaro.

Hi there Alvaro, and welcome to the forum.
What a great story. I’m straight on to it now. Give me a day or two and I’ll see what I can come up with. With your permission I’ll also put it on here so that the supporters will be able to follow his story.

Hello and thanks for the interest!
That kind of stories are not weird in our country, half of the founders of Peñarol were british people, workers and managers of the Central Uruguay Railway Co.
There are a lot of players in the early years of our football that came from England, people who emigrated to work here and ended in the sport.
Especcialy about these two:
Percy Davidson Chater was i think the best cricket player in Uruguay's history, to be fair it's not a sport who became relevant here, but looking at the chronicles for late 1890's you can tell that. He played cricket in England and some data was provided to me by Association of Cricket Historians. In Uruguay he was the first President of the football association (now Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol). You can find my research about him here:
About this Nugent, not a single clue, not even his name. Sadly it's something not so weird, im trying to trace the lifes of 118 founders of Peñarol in 1891 and half of them are just a surname. Even there are some transcription errors who just be copied book after book, im trying to fix some of that, a couple of months into that job and a lot to do yet.
To be fair, im not specially hopful about this two and the suposed link with Preston North End, there are several references made by historians that i have investigate who became not precise, but it worth the try!
Sorry about my precarious english, i hope it's understandable.
Thanks again for the help!!

It is perfectly understandable. Keep up the good work, and please feel free to spread the good name of Preston North End around Uruguay.

Good luck pal. I hope you find what you want too.
I did a project on PNE at school for my English?, I think, and got loads of history and info on the players etc,
but nothing on the youth players unfortunately.
I don`t have anything of it left now as it was in the early seventies and even my memory has been lost to time.....
I wish you well in your quest.....

P.S.
Your English is very much understandable......Better than most on here......I`ll get my coat....

The Splash is definitely the man for you. Could I ask that you post some of your research on here. I find it fascinating. Thank you and good luck.

Of course! I hope once will all my investigations be part of a book. I share one of my favourite stories, the life of the fisrst Captain champion of the Uruguayan League in 1900: https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1687135893830668289

There are others like the finding of the house of the second President of Peñarol when he come back to live in England, he named it 'Villa Peñarol" and it was a legend until i was able to find his descendants. You can find all that in my twitter account.

Bienvenidos amiguito. Si en cualquier momento estás en Buenos Aires avisamé y nos juntamos para hablar de Preston. Y que lindo Uruguay!
