Confirmed Ben Whiteman - Sold

Confirmed Ben Whiteman - Sold

This is fucking brilliant.

I have raised a lot of concern how any manager and recruitment will ever get the financial clout to take us back to a team with wingers. Literally nobody was banking on Disney FC spunking actual cash on Boring old Ben but here we are.

Yes but when you have to retire by 36/37 you have to maximise your earnings when you get the chance.

I still think it’s a cunt’s trick but I don’t really blame him for doing it, that’s just football. There’s very little loyalty both ways generally speaking.
It's a job.

They can you know post retirement get another job just like everyone else.

I don't disagree with your post, just adding some extra prospective regards post football career.

Yes, but you live to your means. Most footballers have big houses on big mortgages. If they’re smart, they invest and save as much as they can while playing to make life as easy as possible when they retire.

If you could maximise your earnings to prevent working after a long football career and set up your family for the future, why wouldn’t you do that?

Good luck fella, in life you have to do what you have to do, especially when you have a young family.

& this is the point missed by virtually everyone else, who in the same position would have done the same thing, its 1 last major payday for him/ set his family up for life, ok the way its been manufactured leaves a bit of a sour taste but thats football, the power is with the players now a days after jean marc bosman

As has been said a few times. I think that there's almost no one who, in the cold light of day, begrudges a 30 Yr old from making this move to secure his family's future. But if you sign a lucrative contract to be PNE captain and yo then wish to break it, in order to gain greater riches, then it's common decency to come with humility.

I am always someone who tries to see the best in people. It's possible Whiteman has been hung out to dry. But the way he's apparently gone about this move doesn't pass the sniff test for me.

There's 100% loyalty from football clubs when it comes to giving players security of payment of high salaries throughout their contracts, no matter what.

If a player wants to abandon a club that made a high financial commitment to him, in order to enrich himself, then yeah... it's understandable. But they don't have the right or moral high ground, and should behave that way.

Decent Championship footballer, terrible captain.

3 Million quid, snap your hand off every day of the week.

Frightening though, that’s the cost for a squad player at a play off competing side now a days, we are so so so far behind and if this takeover doesn’t happen, we’re so fucked.

To my knowledge, a lot of 'entertainers' and presumably high earning footballers/sports people put their earnings into a trust fund or limited company and draw down on it, so that when there career or shelf life (entertainers) comes to an end, they can still carry on taking a salary out, for years to come.

That is incorrect and totally missing the point.
The vast majority of people would not have acted like whiteman has because they are respectful. You can leave to join another club but just don’t be a dick about it.

I will use David Nugent as an example. David always said that by the end of the 06 07 season he wanted to join a prem club if Preston did not get promoted. Did he down tools during that time. No he scored 17 goals as Preston just missed out of on a play off place.

‘The power is with the player’ is just nonsense. If the power was with the player then we would have accepted the first offer. We got 3 million which was great business.

TBF Raefil i thought from a lot of your posts that you had a certain moral and ethical stance on things?
Surely you cannot condone the way that Whiteman has conducted himself?
Or am i wrong on the first line?
Ive always been a great believer in the old adage, "Theres always 2 sides to a story," and BW does hint at that in his leaving message.

Absolutely true but there's a way of doing what you have to do.
Yep, cant argue with that but I do wonder what led to that stance?

Maybe he was just being petulant, we dont know, perhaps he, like us on here, had had enough of whats been happening at our club with ownership, player investment etc, lets be honest many of us on here have made a stance of not renewing our season cards because of it all, downing tools in the only way we could?

In this day and age (wrongly but it is the case) all the power lies with the player. Effectively all they have to do is say they want to leave and it happens, there’s no need to do what Whiteman did (and in the absence of evidence to the contrary we have to believe the manager).

My views on footballer pay have not changed - they’re paid too much, way too much. It started with the top players earning the big money and I can remember having the argument that players like John Barnes deserve the money they got and compared them to the top pop stars who got it because people paid to watch them. It’s now ridiculous with average second division players being paid half a million plus per year - and that’s a conservative figure. I don’t blame anyone for wanting to increase their salary but take home pay of at least £300,000? I think I’d manage to set myself up for life after a few years of that.

Exactly. I don't think anyone begrudges him the 'pay day' (one thing Wrexham fans also don't understand) it's how he went about it.

If someone wants a move, fine but just don't down tools and sulk.

Came here to say exactly this, as someone who is self-employed I'll always try and get the higher paying job, but there are ways of going about things.

Another job that pays 35k per week?

He was on 18k pw here, and had a year left on his deal. So a contract worth around 900k all in. If reports are correct and he will be on double money at Wrexham and has a potential 4 year deal at 35k, then that contract is worth £7m.

He'll earn more in his 4 years at Wrexham than he has in the previous 12 years combined

I am not arguing that. I agree with you and BPIG.

It is when people say "it's a short career (true)" as if they are unable to do any other kind of work post football.
