Better off relegated?

Better off relegated?

Serious Question - would we be better off releggated from a financial point of view.?
Its fact we lose millions every season and Hemmings keep us a float but would the loses be less in L1

  • Crowds would drop but not by much and I think the ticket prices would stay the same, so for me no major drop in revenue
  • Salaries of staff would be substantailly lower
  • TV revenue much lower
  • lower sponshorship money
  • lower match day costs
I dont know the numbers here, but I strongly expect that due to the drop in salaries, being in L would mean reduced annual loses.

Discuss?

Absolutely never in a million years....it was so shit last time we were there, hardly any away fans plus awful standered of football and no guarantee of being back up anytime soon......bollocks to that!!

The question was would the club be better off finacially. i.e. lose less money in L1,?
As per my post, we almost went out of Business last time when spending a significant amount of time in the bottom 2 Divisions.
That would be a scenario i would not see the Hemmings continuing to input dead money into.
A new owner may or may not put significant funds in, but again Bradford City who still get 18k plus crowds have had owners who put in reasonable funds - but are still in Lg 2 (Division 4).
Living outside Preston, albeit only a 2 hour extra drive there and back, i would probably not bother making the effort, at least nowadays i guess i could join the ranks of the tele watchers though.

Losses would be lower, but so would income.

We don't know what the owners would do, but it's a fair bet they'd copy the old man initially - last time we were relegated, turnover halved, but so did the wage bill. With the reduced budget we could only afford Westley's madhouse, and we didn't get out of L1 until we significantly ratcheted the budget and professionalism back up again.

Again, we don't know what the current owners would do, what their "ambitions" would be, nothing. They don't share that sort of information with mere fans.

But relegation is coming anyway if we don't change strategy - not necessarily this season, but soon enough - so it's best not to think about the prospect as Armageddon, more just another place for us to settle into mid-table, possibly for a loooong time.
I have said on here that i am relatively happy with what (ultimately) ends up as mid table obscurity, as i think the Championship is a great Division.
However i may have been misunderstood as to what is my aim for the Club at the start of the Season.
For things to tail off and then end up mid table at the end we need to have had assembled a squad that has the potential to get into the play offs, even if it ultimately falls away, but could also given a bit of luck and the right run in, also do it.
I totally agree that a squad like we have at the moment is at best geared to be lower mid table, which therefore always gives a scenario where given a bad run, injuries, suspensions means either relegation or only just escaping.
Possibly our best scenario this Season is to just escape relegation and the Hemmings wake up to the fact that Ridsdale not only totally wastes the monies they put in but also doesn't enhance the available budget either.
And actually get a decent replacement.

It all depends on the ownership. The asking price would surely have to drop although no doubt some bizarre criteria would be implemented to have it the same as now.

I'm not sure it's 10/11 just yet, more like 09/10 when the wheels fell off enough for Irvine to be sacked but there were enough experienced players still to get the team to safety but think everyone knew what was coming the next season especially just thinking signing young loanees would be enough under Fergie Jr.

Then it was an awful first 18 months back in league one under Brown/Medals so number one would be getting the manager right as would PH even stay? Or would he even still be in a job as getting relegated would mean winning very few games for the rest of the season.

If an Ipswich type revival under new ownership could be guaranteed I'm sure many would take it but it took them 2-3 years and a few wrong manager picks for them to get to McKenna.

And we'd get back ... How ?

Bigger fish in smaller pond, chance to rebuild with younger players etc.

Look at what happened last time. Went down with a very poor squad with over the hill players. Brown then compounded that by signing Ashbee and Clarke Carlisle. Didn't Grezza come back aswell when he was nearly 40.

So wasted a season and then Westley made his 20 odd signings. A couple of decent ones like Hunts but so much rubbish.

It needed a good pro like Grayson to get things back to basics with clever experienced pick ups like Davies, Tom Clarke, Beckford, Kilkenny to settle things down and get a strong dressing room spirit again. Then being strong contenders meant hungry young players like Pearson, DJ and Robbo were interested in joining as they were proving themselves in league one for other clubs.

That's the formula if the worst happens again. Delusion if anyone thinks the club would walk automatic promotion with all of Storey, Hughes, Ledson, Brady etc as regulars. Only one I'd back to do anything would be Keane and he might have a release clause in the new deal he signed.

I'm not sure any of our younger recruits are up to league 1 level. I mean how many have we sent out on loan to actual league clubs and how successful have they been?

Best if he's still here would surely get a chance. Can only think PH dosen't think he's up to championship football so interested what January brings for him.

FGR might start to come into contention aswell as he'll be 19 start of next season so needs to be playing games somewhere.

Beyond that it will having to properly scout and sign some decent young players emerging from league 2 or abroad which I appreciate feels like too much hard work for the present lot.

It took Derby - a larger club than PNE - several seasons to get back up to the Champ.
Bolton , been now there ages now, a Club that's roundabout the same size as PNE. Wigan, same points in L1 as Blackpool.

TBH I think we were lucky getting back so quickly (& that wasn't a rebound ! ) & there's no way relegation is an 'option' for a Club that's down on its uppers already.

Didn't we get a hint with the Craig statement at the end of last season with his view the club shouldn't just accept lasting the last five without scoring and should've pushed far stronger for 6th in the run in. Or perhaps that was the ultimate public relations fluff statement. He didn't say at least mid table was the best this club could hope for.

Bet he's dreading dictating another one in May with the looming disaster this season is turning into, near impossible to spin relegation as anything but terrible.

Bolton had terrible financial problems when they went down in 2019. Think they started the first game at Wycombe with basically an under 20 line up as they hardly had any players and they were hours away from going out of business like Bury. In more normal circumstances they'd have been up there as they still had Phil Parkinson as manager then and he's proving again at Wrexham he's a top end league one manager. They got their reset in league two and had decent momentum since.

Took Derby two years. What they did well was getting in a Grayson type manager like Paul Warne immediately and filling their squad with experience.

1, the Op pitched the question financially - football will always be played on grass not spreadsheets.

2. In our 9 championship years we've not had to contend with a relegation battle - if that happens it would force all home truths to come to the surface and bring about change - survive or fail.

Losses would be lower and more manageable from a cynical point of view, if the current £10m a year hit is starting to bite this hierarchy. Not saying they want this, but in that context some at the top might not be too down upon relegation.

It would be a disaster for the club from a football standpoint though. Anybody who has notions of a reset following relegation or a 'we need it to have a clearout' argument is living in cloud cuckoo land. Just take a look at Rovers who exited the Prem and have never returned. That's what would happen here upon relegation, only we'd be stuck in League One for years wondering when we'll make it back to the Championship.

The only solution here is for Ms Revitt, Craig and Ridsdale to leave the building and hand the reins over to people with a bit of life about them.

Find these lively people then who are willing and able!!!

The landscape of football has changed somewhat since then, the days of cheap deals for young players of DJ’s quality don’t happen. Teams sign them up to 4 or 5 year deals and loan them out in the hope of selling for a few million with buy back clauses if they do well. The ones allowed to leave are the like of Stewart who couldn’t even get a game when we had 1 fit striker who we ran into the ground.

Liverpool put a buy back clause in the Stewart deal. So they also have seen something. The majority of PNE fans have rarely seen him play yet have written him off. We often called young Delap who is now getting rave reviews in the Premiership because RL played him out wide!!. These are meant to be footy wise intelligent managers.

Keane is 32 hardly one for the future

What does it matter if we're in league one winning more matches or in the championship being distinctly average and no threat. The premier league is beyond us because we don't have the intelligence and personnel to get us near that.

I am the same ok we talk about football on offer but it's worse in league 1 & some of the atmosphere is worse ok to few it might be few new grounds etc but you really shouldn't want to get relegated or wanting to.

Look how many clubs who are down now been for few seasons loads.

I was talking to a couple of Leeds fans not so long ago, and they both said they prefered watching games in the Championship where their team could compete rather than being in the prem and getting whipped week in week out, Valid points which i can understand.
They said it was a much more enjoyable experience with a betetr atmospeher seeing their team often win and be able to compete.

To be fair it only took derby two seasons to go up.
