Cannon

Cannon

Would cannon coming here mean Ali might be involved in that deal. Seems it's gone quiet about his contract extension

It was well known that we tried. The question is, what percentage of his wage was offered?

Under Ridsdales leadership the only chance we've got of signing him is when he's on a free and been out injured for a year so has to accept a below championship average salary.

Ridsdale has dropped clangers with recruitment but it’s the very low level of budget that in all likelihood prevents us making a realistic wage contribution.
He fitted in well here and would love to see him return.
If he did will hopefully be as successful as Iversen on rejoining.

£100+ million over the past decade isn't a low budget, it's how it's been wasted that is the issue, the Ridsdale issue.

Time and time again it's been "we tried". Yes we did, but have been massively failing in the transfer market for a decade. Prem loans have managed to mask the issue but ultimately the focus should be on developing players to sell on for a profit. Cannon doesn't fit into this category any more, arguably never did if his Leicester transfer fee was correct, so we should be looking elsewhere.

Depends how we look in January. If there's a realistic hope of a top 6 finish, then spending on a short term boost like a quality striker for half a season in a worthwhile gamble.

Didn’t realise that the budget had been that much.
I agree it hasn’t been used effectively over the years with too many injured players signed and stupid extensions given.
Still a low budget by Championship standards surely albeit not quite the lowest.

ironically the one season we tried that, in signing Scott Sinclair, he turned out to be shit and well past his best.

Short term deals have their place but we need the longer term projects as well. Something we don't have the leadership, scouting network or development set-up to make work.

Yet next season another £10million+ is going to be paid out to a bunch of Championship plodders who are made up if they finish 11th.

Where is the next David Nugent when you need him?

I'm not sure he's worth chasing.
Yes, great for us last time but both Leicester and now Sheffield seem happy to let him go who are after all now in the same division as us.
There must be a reason and I can only presume he's not deemed to be good enough.

Expect a statement from Ridsdale in the next 48 hours advertising that the total budget since 2015 has "only" been £87.5 million but I'm simply going on the basis of 10 years of £10 million but I think recently it's been higher than that - can't be arsed looking up the accounts. Some people just count the Conway Trust investment as the budget, others count gate money, sky money and our wonderful commercial income. There is the argument that without the Hemmings investment that we wouldn't be able to tread water in the championship, and that's true, but that's another discussion.

Regardless, had the budget been invested better in the past decade more players would have been signed cheap and potentially sold for a profit, therefore theoretically increasing the budget and meaning offering £1 million for Cannon on loan
for a season might have been an option rather than the £250k which was probably offered.

It's the "vision" of signing and re-signing safety first championship plodders that grates on me the most as it seems at times the past decade has been one massive missed opportunity at a time when smaller clubs such as Bournemouth have moved light years ahead of us.

Already sat in an academy of a prem side, will never get the right loan move and will drift out of the game aged 24.

However, a decent under 21s and pathway might encourage him to reject a contract extension aged 20 with said Prem club and take a short term reduction in wages in the hope of signing his next one as a first team premier League player.

It is a lot harder to find hidden gems than even 20 years ago but that doesn't excuse Ridsdale for being as shit at his job of overseeing recruitment and contract extensions as he is.

Spot on
The game has changed so much over the last few decades.
The big clubs and big academies hoovering up any talent with minimal opportunity for them in the first team

If the rumours of a takeover are accurate I very much doubt we'll be seeing any more contract extensions until the new owners take control.
Ah yeah that's a good point never took that into consideration. What with Potts one gone silent too
