Lots of my North End heroes over 66 years as a fan, have been strong captains- Nobby Lawton, Sean Gregan, Tom Clarke.
I like Ben Whiteman as a player when he is confident (ie. not at present!) but I dont't feel that he has the style or the energy to inspire a struggling team. Certainly in the second half at neither Swansea nor at Oxford did anybody seem to take responsibility.
From the current squad, do we have a Captain?

Personally I like captains to be centre defenders or defensive midfielders. I feel it gives the team grit and organisation when they’re in the shit. Being in the spine of the team.

Sean Gregan for me was the last memorable captain material I remember. Taking the game by the scuff of the neck and dragging the team forward.

I also fondly remember David Moyes and Graham Alexander.

Bryson, Lucketti and Clarke were ok.

Captains should be one of the first names on the team sheet; vocal, consistent, someone that stands out when the going gets tough, encourages players, etc.

I don’t see that in Whiteman. I didn’t see it in Browne. The problem is, I don’t see it in any of them.

Duane Holmes might be up for it - but it doesn't seem he's a 90 minute player.
And so far this season he's not inspired.

Brady's always giving it lip- sometimes to the wrong people, but he might thrive on the responsibility. Especially in the next home game.

Ledson.. for that tackle at Blackburn .. or at least any other player who can do the inspirational stuff.. McCanns tackle and run and set from one box to the other .. Thor for the talk ..sadly, it’s not Whiteman who I think gets the gig because he is one of the first picks . Inspirational he is not .. can’t think of any others that are nailed on starters

If he stops makng stupid cynical fouls like those he committed on Saturday then Lindsay would fit the bill. Whiteman might play better relieved of the captaincy but as with Potts I increasingly think he should be repurposed as a right-sided defender.

Thor seems to be the best candidate to me from what little we have seen of him, seems a natural leader on the pitch whereas Whiteman is anonymous for huge parts of the games. I'd even have Ledson above Whiteman for captain based on this seasons games.
