Central Midfield

Central Midfield

Watching the Cardiff - Forest game on TV just shows how poor our centre midfielders are compared to other teams in this league.

Yes he does put the effort in but as seen yesterday in close situations his short pass distribution was shocking in the times he failed to find his man and gave away the ball.
realistically is his short passing any worse then either chaplow or shumi? both are shockingly lax passers at the best of times.

Im not saying id advocate Sedge in the middle btw, i just dont think its his passing thats realy an issue if you take into account who he will be replacng.

And that's why i'm illustrating Sedgwick's shortcomings in respect of we wouldn't be improving the situation in central midfield jay, but i agree it's getting tiresome watching us giving the ball away so cheaply!! i know it's easy to say watching from the stands looking at the big picture below us but most of the time it's the basic's letting us down 😡

I thought McKenna was crap for Forest tonight at Cardiff. Plenty of wayward passes and very very stationary. He trots around the pitch like a smaller version of Jan Molby.
We still miss O'Neil more than McKenna.

Agree. I was saying yeterday how we could do with BON!!
PLEASE,PLEASE CAN WE STRIP LONNERS AS CAPTAIN AND GET AN ON FIELD PLAYER AS CAPTAIN! No-one listens to him. Can never understand why a goalie is captain, a waste of time

You must've watched a different game than me mate.

He did more in the 1st half than Carter, Chaplow & Shumi have done all season.

I would tend to agree, I simly cannot fathom how players at the 2nd tier of one of the greatest leagues in the world, the 4th most watched league on the planet, cant pass 5 yards with any consistency.

I dont know what we do in training, but it cant always be the right things.

Only watched second half, so can't really comment on full game. He was crap the second half I watched. In most peoples shadows, and a nowhere near as good as he was 2 seasons ago never mind 4 or 5 seasons ago.

Maybe so but still better than we have at the mo IMHO.

McKenna and Williamson were forming a great partnership at the end of last season. All McKenna needed was somebody next to him with a bit of pace and strength who he could trust not to lose the ball.

McKenna was not as good as he had been in the past but ...

1 He was aware of his strengths and weaknesses and he played accordingly.

2 He could use both feet and had a decent first touch

3 He could head a ball and often outjumped players a great deal taller than himself, due to superior timing.

4 He always made himself available to receive the ball and the other players trusted him with it.

He wasn't perfect but none of our current midfielders are anywhere near him!

Some fans are suggesting that Sedgewick be tried in central midfield. Whilst I like his attitude I would suggest that he lacks the confidence to play there. He needs the security of the touchline when under pressure. Central midfield requires a confidence that Sedge does not possess. Think back to some of our most dominant central midfielders, Gregan at his best, Brian O' Neil, these players had authority when in possession.

We need to sort this out soon!

Quite right Mersey - both in your appreciation of McKenna and in your judgement that Sedgwick should not be played in central midfield. Sedgwick should be left where he is - as a defensive wide midfielder able to drift and help shore up the centre, a role that is quite distinct from being a central midfielder in the first place. I am still hopeful that the Shumulikoski-Chaplow partnership might yet 'click'. But if we need to shore up the central midfield then the options from existing resources are Davidson or maybe Jones.

Our midfield badly misses McKenna. Simple as that. Maybe he wasn't outstanding but he was a consistent performer and always showed for the ball. Chaplow and Carter do neither of these. Shumi shows glimpses - he keeps it simple and is a busy player. But it's too early to judge him.

Foe me, the best option we have now, from what ive seen of these players in the past, is shumi and davidson central midfield. Between them they can bring back all the things we now lack, strangely all the things mckenna added. Effort, leadership, taking responsibility, retaining posession, tackling and heading.
