Show some balls.

Selling Sean St Ledger (or an initial loan, or whatever) to Middlesbrough (a promotion rival, no less) would be an error of the gravest order and will prove once and for all what the club's ambitions are.

After a decent start, selling our best player would also announce to the rest of the squad that we're not confident of making a bid for promotion which will leave a trail of devastation throughout the remainder of the season and beyond.

KEEP SEAN ST LEDGER AND GO FOR IT, DEREK - if we keep him we are perfectly capable of promotion, if we don't we've fucking no chance believe me.

He'll be worth more at the end of the season because he'd have had a good season followed by a World Cup with Ireland - this will put £2 million on his value. How can we afford to cash in now when he'll clearly be worth more next summer?!

I'm seriously worried, it seems to me like the club are pushing SSL into a move because they don't have the balls to attempt to see the job through.

I hope I'm wrong.

Im completley with you Danny , we cant keep doing this and still expect to get a decent attendance.
What happens if in the next 3 years we dont find another Macken, Nugent or SSL?
Will we go bust Derek ?
The message we faithful fans (maybe blind faithers) are beginning to get is that we are SELLING club and we have reached the pinnacle of our ambitions or current limitations under our current board.

I hope you are wrong. But there is no proof anyone wants him let alone a promotion rival. Also, what is SSL's slant on this? Does he want a move?

Another very good point - the message that selling our best player mid-season would send out would be devastating.

Sell him if we don't get promoted fair enough, but now? Absolute fucking shite. It's obvious that he'd be happy to stay until May.

It's gathering pace, isn't it? His dad's been on here pretty much confirming the rumours and that North End want to cash in. What a way to carry on. 😡

This would be totally suicidal piece of business, I hope it all turns out to be bulshit though.

We can only hope, hence my plea. I think that DS/AI should be making a statement tomorrow saying that we want to keep the player until the end of the season in order to make a promotion bid. At least that's what I'd do.

Will it happen though? Will it fuck.

Selling him to help balance the books is one thing, regardless of the timing. But to rival club? Utterly embarrassing...

Its not so much the selling him that irks me its the fact that its to Boro. We can have a real go at this division, but it won't help if we sell one of our best players to a rival. Sell him to a premiership club, fine, but to Boro? Shit move for us and a shit move for Sean - he could do much better. Dannys point about the World Cup is spot on as well. A good WC and he can name his club to a certain degree - its always silly season transfer wise after a WC. From the players perspective, I'd rather be at a club like North End that won't try and stand in my way after a good world cup than Boro who think they are much bigger than they are and would try and keep him. It would suit us and suit Sean to stay for the season and look for a move next summer. Whatever Boro are offering will be chicken feed compared to what will be on the table if he has a good world cup.

It depends what the alternative is though. Is Hemmings strapped for cash after the credit crunch? Is the bank threatening to pull the plug? We may have to wait until the accounts are published before we get a clearer picture.

If a sale is in the pipeline so that we can bring in 2-3 players and keep the wolves from the door then in is understandable if frustrating and sad. If it is merely because any old club has come up with a decent offer and lets take it while we can then it would be a huge gamble on the playing, managerial and PR front.

We can only watch what unfolds when SSL returns on Thursday. I notice the Alves deal seems to have been completed and I would imagine Southgate see SSL as a very similar player to himself in his prime.

Of course Irvine wants to keep SSL - he said he was pleased to keep his squad together only last week. It sounds however that he may find the rug pulled from beneath him this week for whatever reason.

in a perverse way i hope he does go. It could be the catalytic kick up the arse we need to move to the next stage. Shaw would have to go surely!

In fairness i reckon it's just rumour and daft paper talk - we'll see!

If SSL was to be sold in January to "balance the books", then I'm sure most fans would be disappointed, but would accept the situation.

However to LOAN him first with a few to a permanent signing, to one of our promotion rivals, would be a bridge to far for many I feel.

I agree on both points.

well iguess it depends what position we're in. Mid table and yes, i agree but anywhere near the play offs and i'm sure the majority wouldn't accept the situation.

Our board can't be that stupid to loan out SSL to a rival CCC team, can they?

How can they expect loyalty from managers and fans when they keep moving the goal posts?

We all know the eventual fee won't be re-invested in the side ala Burnley with their Lafferty money.

Prove me wrong please Derek.

Fair point, however knowing North End, it wouldn't make any difference if the right fee is offered.

At least in January, we could TRY to replace him 🙄

Personally, I can see the usual suspects making excuses for the club's decision.

Let's just hope that it doesn't come to that. The situation certainly needs clarification though.

What happens if he were to get a bad injury while on loan. Surely they'd send him back for us to pick up the medical bills and call off the deal. Sounds like a lose, lose situation to me. if it happens i could see Irvine walking as well.

Thank phook i didn't renew my season ticket.

Danny you know that this will not happen, PNE never commment on transfers do they, just like they didn't comment on Paul Mckenna going to Forest 🙄

I presume any such deal would require Middlesborough to make an initial payment into our bank account now?

We borrowed a lot of money to get through last season, maybe we are already skint this season?

Need to beat Spurs and get to Old Trafford for another payday!

Just found 50p down the sofa, any use Derek?
