If I'm not mistaken, we have been trying to sign wing backs for years and have been playing 3 centre halves etc etc.

Well we have been awful for ages too, same styles of turgid crap play, and drawing or losing huge amounts of games

Is it not time to try a somewhat old school 442, with gibson and offiah in the middle and build out from there?!

Something has to give, if we dont have the players or management to make us win with this 352 after 2/3 seasons then make it more simple and revert to a more straight forward formation?!?!?!?

Im sick of watching the exact crap performance like yesterday and DONT want to see this when the season starts

Thoughts people?!

He's been using 442 along with the 352 in the friendlies. Has switched to it at some point in the second halves.

If we sign another player who can play out wide, then we should move to a back four for good. I think it'll help a lot with our issues trying to build-up play from the back.

I don't think we have the players. Like last season, I can see us experimenting with it, and like last season, I can see it going very badly.

If you’re playing for 3 centre halves, one or more need to be more expansive as otherwise you’ve lost a player in the rest of the pitch. The over lapping centre half style employed by Sheffield United was interesting and not sure if we’ve the players for that but certainly Gibson and Offiah could push up on occasion to vary the offence.

We have played wingers as wingbacks while persisting with a dysfunctional 3 at the back, for years.

It would be ironic to switch formation now we've signed wing backs and don't have wingers.

If we have a shit start to the season, id make a change tbh

Bored senseless of seeing the same setup not bringing results

Seems no matter who comes in, we dont seem to win

No point even discussing it. Ridsdale believes 5 at the back is the way to go, and has done since Neil left, and has recruited every manager since based on them playing a back 5. It’s also cheaper to recruit for because wingers cost money.

Heckingbottom is wedded to it, although not as much as Lowe. He occasionally switches to a 442 - which is usually as easy to counter and deal with for opposition as our back 5

We are genuinely stuck with this formation until Peter dies or retires and a hierarchy come in that will sanction the purchase of actual talented attackers

It's true. He's a massive Nathan Jones fan too.

One of the main reasons I have just hated watching us for years now.

Wingers are the best thing about football.

It's just a pity we could only get a player like Bowler (Q.wtf went wrong with him ? )
- or the Club not try & keep and build a team around someone like Liam Millar. ( who was never a Wing-Back or someone who could play on both sides) Having "Badges" didn't help at the time, but would Hecky have tried to shoehorn him that same way? Not the the Fat Controller would have disapproved .

Did we not play 4-4-2 against the mighty Tranmere and lost 2-0. All for changing to a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 as it generally offers you more options going forward. I think the biggest problem is we just have to many plodders in the team who aren’t able to move to ball quickly or do a quick counter attack.
This season has all the hallmarks of the season with Millar who was our only attacking outlet with pace. Get 2 players on him and you stop our attacking threat

Tbf against Tranmere we had the Chuckle Brothers at CB, Gibson LB, two LBs as wingers and Mads as a striker

It’s two completely different set ups with and without the ball. PH did the exact same as SUFC.

3-5-2 on the ball (which gives the wing backs license to play very high, the wide CMs normally drop outside the lines into the full back position to receive on build up).

Then a 4-4-2 mid block without the ball, which I don’t mind because it’s tough to get through if you’re compact, but then a threat on transition with two centre forwards and wide players.

One thing I’ve noticed though is we are nowhere near as intense in our press as PH said he’d like us to be when he joined. It’s very much a mid block, only applying pressure on specific triggers. I did think we’d see a return to the AN-type high press, but doesn’t seem to be the case.

Agree. I remember the 1st 25mins away at Oxford in one of his early games. We were terrific in pressing. Really high intensity. It has definitely slowly dropped off. Would love to see us take it to teams again

But at Sheff U, he was doing it with the best players in the league. Ahmedhodzic at CB, Bogle/Baldock at RB, Norwood, Doyle and McAtee as a midfield 3, Ndiaye and McBurnie up top

You can probably afford to do a different setup with those players and play well, but when you try and do it with a bargain basement squad, you’re going to find some sort of deficit, whether that’s going forwards or defensively

Well, with a bargain basement squad, there’d be some sort of deficit whichever formation you play.

I don’t mind it personally. It’s better than defending in a back five like we did last season, which invites pressure and offers no threat in transition.
