Heckingbottom

Tony Lomor came here having been another player who always seemed to score against us but sadly when he signed for us that was the end of his goalscoring prowess, another one we successfully knocked the stuffing out of.
He was allegedly 6ft 2" but when he jumped he was shorter than when stood still.
We actually swapped him with David Reeves and rumour had it we sold Reeves as we didn't want to pay anymore money out as his signing from Carlisle was appearance based. That I can believe.
One of many pitiful signings we have made over the years

The problem with McBurnie was the wage demands he made. We were not prepared to pay what his agent demanded.
Smith was an easy option, no fee involved just his wages but a complete waste of a wage, the worse signing since Tony Lormor.

The Serbian was signed just in case we managed to get a club to buy Milly.

The clubs in a mess as regards what they are willing to spend which is next to nothing.

Hopefully we will be in the championship next season but if there is no investment in the summer then we will be in the position until we drop out.

There are a host of players that need moving on in the summer.
This this board need to sell and be quick about it
The whole recruitment set up needs reviewing with better staff employed
The coaching staff need a good looking at as well. A new set piece coach, a defence coach required.
A new manager?
The board are not interested !

He got a pass last season because of the mess Lowe left us in and the lack of a proper pre-season.

This year, it’s his squad so that’s not going to wash.

However, he did have to build that squad with very little money.

(Imagine if we’d got McBurnie instead of Smith, for example.)

I’m not saying he’s blameless - he’s making a right mess of it at the moment and looks like he’s given up.

But he was dealt a shit hand.

Just like the next guy will be until these owners depart.
I keep on seeing people mention that first point. It’s nonsense imo. It’s the managers job to go in and improve the current set of players.

Newcastle were in a mess when Steve Bruce got fired. Eddie Howe went in and their results improved with the same set of players.

He shouldn’t have got a pass for last season. The way we ended it was a disgrace. He had 44 games and failed.

I don't really understand this first point. Do you think outside of the Premier league it just drops to schoolboy kick and rush?
I didn't suggest it's one extreme to the other. It's 'only' one league above but the gulf in everything on the pitch out there is massive. I didn't suggest it's"Muck & Nettles" in the Championship, thats being simplistic. But it's relation to PNE is for their game to be playing on a different planet. Or League.
The only time there's "Cup upsets" now between Prem. & Champ. is when the Prem.club is fighting for survival & the Prem squad is so thin. Eg. Burnley

They're all very highly paid professional footballers, who could be top flight in other countries.
"Other countries". Yep, it's an international game. So, so many countries. But I'm on about the "Second Division" of the English League. ( We can all see the standard of these other countries if we care to watch Europa Conference League Qualifiers. )
At Coventry the other night PNE were a whole class below them- (and Boro.)
I'd still put money on at least one of them bouncing straight back from the Prem - (if I did gamble.)
Tactics, patterns of play and such aren't exclusive to the elite teams. Just look at Bodo/Glimt or NEC Nijmegen and how their intentionally progressive styles of play are causing them to punch miles above their weights, domestically and in Europe. They certainly aren't doing that based on being the very best footballers or athletes.
Remember when Sheffield United 'took the Premier League by storm' for half a season a few years back under Chris Wilder ? He bought overlapping centre-backs into the game & it took quite a bit of time before it was sussed-out. And then it was sussed-out.
Those two Clubs are the 2019/20 Sheffield United's of the moment. The end .

Just sounds like you've decided you can't be fucked, so therefore you're going to bury your head in the sand tbh.

Tactics evolve. Being ahead of the curve can make a real difference. The fact that they get caught up doesn't negate that, so much as prove the point, it's important enough that other teams have to learn to adapt and counter what you do.

Agree with a lot of that but honestly if we'd had McBurnie up front then how many chances would he get? We create fuck all and hardly ever attack and put teams under any pressure so I don't think McBurnie or anyone else would make much difference.

Still can’t get my head round how we have gone off a cliff since early Jan, there must be a bit more to it, has he lost the players ?

Was discussing this with my parents and between us we can't remember such a collapse during a season.

We've had relegations, we've had re-elections and worse seasons as a whole but to be 3rd to 14th since Christmas really is abysmal.

Craig Hemmings stated under the medal winner that the end to the season was "unacceptable."

Since then we have had two further seasons with a total collapse and the owners have done bugger all about it.

3rd to 17th.

Medal Winner - Westley.

Badges - Lowe.

How long a period was that over though and when I talk of drop offs its from being half decent to shit.

Rather than just league positions.
We are 17th now.

You mentioned Medal Winner. That was Westley. I'm saying you meant Lowe.

Think you need a Cup of Tea and the Wife / Kids to massage your feet! 😂 👍

The deciding factor is whether it's interesting or entertaining to watch, rather than going down the road of a game decided by drilled , very skilled athletes, as perfected by Man. City. Take away the on-screen marker pens and the rest of the current technology and the Beeb's M.o.D. would lose it's appeal even more. I just personally don't find it very interesting to watch anymore, though of course I like watching individual goal-scoring talent like Haaland exciting. Then you get a team like Arsenal and its incredibly effective & efficient ( & efficient in the art of gamesmanship, too ) players - and my eyes slowly glaze over watching it. You might enjoy watching Arsenal (1000's do ! ) but I wouldn't watch them out of choice. Because it's not entertaining to me. It's very efficient though.

Consider another game -
American Football.
You could be a fan, - again , 1000's do. Why aren't you ? ( Ay, for all I know, you are.) it's a very physical game, more so than World/U.K. football, employing lots of specialised 'substitutes' , lots of stoppage time for sports drinks breaks & opportunities for tactical advice given to the players ; lots of dead ball opportunities to utilise these "physical chess" moves when the official blows his restart whistle .
(I don't know if it has VAR.or not....but it wouldn't suprise me )
Some of those factors are now transposed ( (as much as practically possible) into Football.
'Comparing that Sport to for example -
World/U.K.Football- Do you enjoy or simply tolerate/accept its....
Increased number of substitutes used,
the ' drinks breaks' , the on-pitch tactical advice, the increasing use of direct free kicks as the now-main way a team try to score, (rather than from open play.)
The both games have more similarities now.... previously Football did not have those as described above happening , which arguably take away some of the flow, the steam, out of the game . (Hence 99% of games have at least 3+ minutes in the first half & at least 5+ minutes in the 2nd ) . This is now accepted, normalised, 'part & parcel'....
Hence a " Put up with it or shut up about it " attitude?
But I reserve my right to moan about how -
I don't appreciate stoppages very much ; I don't appreciate teams which concentrate on dead balls to score from; innumerable substitutions; highly-skilled athletes being very efficient but a bit automatonic; the black arts ( as perfected by Arsenal ) ; the reliance on technology to make many recorded highlights palatable..... it's simply a not very good watch for me - like it could be. It's gone efficiently dull .
You might consider these changes improvements to the game, but it's just the Premier League that's getting away with these 'improvements' and the gap between the Premier League & the other leagues is getting greater every season.
