I was thinking today about our chicken fiddling rivals down the road and their top scorer Smodicks. - 27 golas in a team that almost got relegated, the guy single handedly kept them up.,
He did this under 2 managers in a team arguably worse than ours yet both managers obviously identified a strength and played to it which was Smodicks. I cant help but think, if Lowe had Smodicks, i doubt he would have scored 10 goals. For Him to score so many Blackburn must have created so many more chances, something I dont think Lowe is capable of.
In fact I am certain he couldnt/wouldnt have gotten the results from him.

Your thoughts??

Won't score many from RWB.

Well, if you think about Lowe in the terms of only doing one thing all season long and absolutely nothing fecking else, then, yeah, I could see Smodics scoring a ton of goals for us.

Well they had two managers who almost got Blackburn relegated.

Saved their skin in the final few matches of the season. This was after a ten game winless run.

I don't think Lowe would have got the same output from Szmodics. He most likely would have stifled his game, like he did with Millar. Lowe's stodgy, dour football isn't suited to a player like Szmodics or Millar. Rovers played a more expansive game than PNE in the first half of the season under JDT which of course led to more chances being created for Szmodics. The football played in some of the games under JDT was the best I have seen in years, when it clicked it was devastating. Obviously, the lack of overall quality in that squad meant it could only be seen now and then. Even so, it was mainly Adam Wharton who was playing incisive balls through to Szmodics. Those two were the main men. Wharton went under the radar somewhat in the Championship, but is now visible to everybody at Palace. He is some player. Losing him was a blow, especially when he was more than happy to stay.

Despite the departure of JDT and Wharton, and the installation of a boring, dour manager in Eustace, Szmodics has continued to link up effectively with Dolan, Rankin-Costello (when fit) and Gallagher. They aren't brilliant players at all, but they can be dynamic on their day and the system Rovers play is different to what Lowe has PNE playing in. Szmodics has been likened to a lower level version of Craig Bellamy by a few pundits and I think they are right. He leads the press, is aggressive and quite quick (not Bellamy level pace, but still decent) . Take a look from 45 seconds in of the below clip as to how the two goals are created for Szmodics at Sunderland. Actually, look at the other three goals too. It's dynamic football but in patches, not consistently enough, as shown by the League table. Not sure if the PNE midfield/attack would be able to combine with him in the same way and create the same type of chances.

A converted midfielder. Just shows what can be done pre season. Our manager doesn't think of these things. Like trying Best in central midfield in a couple of pre season friendlies. Puts a bit of presence in there. Ok, mot fully developed yet but at least you are putting a feeler out. Gregan didn't convert overnight. Nowt wrong with trying something different in a couple of friendlies.
