Irvine back on the transfer trail

Irvine back on the transfer trail

If Derek was asked why did we lose out to Sheff United and he answered by saying they have more money than us, I see nothing wrong than that. Fortunately the usual suspects love to jump on anything they can.

Danny said Derek should have said we are moving on and looking for other players who do want to play for Preston North End instead. Well as far as I can see having looked at the article, the opening line is "Preston North End are in the hunt for two transfer targets as Alan Irvine bids to bolster his Championship squad after last season's play-off heartbreak."

I would imagine rather than Tony Dewhurst just making that rumour up himself out of boredom, Derek probably said to him "we are currently trying to bring in two new faces."

Still, we should never miss a chance to complain.

Its the tone though. The same tone that we've had for years under Derek that I used to buy into hook line and sinker. These are comments designed to make DS look like hes doing a unbelievable job instead of designed to actually placate fans.

Im just fucking annoyed with it now. We were told for years that theres no money, we cant afford to push the boat out, but we do when we are in relegation trouble. I dont want to be pissed on and be told its raining and I dont want derek to run around telling us all we will definitely get promoted, we all know the craic, we all know moneys tight, we all know we cant compete financially so why force it down everyones throats at every oppurtunity and effectively treat the fan base like morons who cant read a balance sheet or work out that 20m in debt means we cant throw money at the team (unless its to sort out dereks mistakes of course 🙄).

I want him to have a think about what his comments suggest before he says them and I want to stop excusing failure before we've even failed, thats all.

These things cost nothing and might got someway to effecting the change in mentality of fans im sure DS wants.

wierdly that has worked for us in the past though... Nugent? St Ledger? Some teams were after them but were prepared to let another club take the gamble... if we get a right midfielder and a centre midfielder that turns into the next two St Ledger/Nugent's then fantastic.

Without trying to sound too much like Voldemort we should have taken the gamble on Dave Edwards and Carlos Edwards or Dave Cotterill instead of Anyinsah whilst he was at Bristol City... these are all players we were linked with or took the wrong option!!

C'est La Vie

I understand that you cannot sign every player that there is out there, however to constantly have it rammed down your throat that its due to our support / attendances that we didn't sign x,y and z player is a bit of a piss take and makes you wonder why fucking bother watching the team. If they have no ambition, why should I be optimistic about them ? I'm not bothered which players the club sign, more how the supporters / fans are typecast by our Chairman and board.

As for the players you mention above, i.e. Nugent, St Ledger the players had been scouted by other clubs (as all players invariably are) however neither Bury or Peterborough had any other bids than North End's for these players so how can you say it worked for us - do you still think if any club from the same division had actually had a bid accepted the 2 players would have signed for shitty little Preston (Chairman's likely response)!

Thing is, if Derek did say this, and I'm not saying he didn't, why is it not quoted in the article? Why not use a direct quote to get some confidence spread amongst fans?

Like I've said before this whole Williamson debacle is indicative of our transfer policy as a whole, and it has been for a while. There is no urgency coming from the club, indeed the impression they give off is down right lazy imo. The best players within our budget aren't just going to materialise from thin air.

We were crying out for a player like Williamson as soon as the January window opened but for some unexplicable reason we had to wait until the LOAN deadline day to sign him. Exactly what is the point of that?

I personally couldn't give a fuck about not getting Williamson - which should be the line Derek takes on this rather than always hammering home the negative.

Or he was one person we had been observing, however we will now move on to our main targets and try and push on the squad for a promotion push next season - not difficult is it to try and be slightly positive !

Some people would call you negative mate, you'd probably just say you are realistic. People often see whatever they want to see.

I'm as disappointed as everyone else with the false dawns down the years and the crap club/fan relationship at the moment, but I don't see anything wrong from DS in the above interview and it is equally damaging I believe when fans jump on anything Derek says.

Not sure mate. Tony Dewhurst is a top journo though so if after an interview he is under the impression we are after two new players, that's good enough for me.

The title of the article is "Irvine back on the transfer trail" and is about us moving on from not signing Williamson by going out to try and bring two new faces in. I consider that a positive, not a negative.

Didnt SSL turn down Birmingham to come here? i have read an interview where he says that.

Burnley going up has been a bit of a watershed moment though hasnt it. The defence for degsy has always been, "oh hes just telling the truth, would you prefer he lied", and we've been doing well, so its washed. Yet burnley have somehow created an atmosphere were the vast majoirty of fans went to wembley believing that the job hadnt been done, and that it wasnt just good enough to get there and that they could do it. They went there and did it.

We should be a club that is so far ahead of Burnley its untrue. We've had play offs and the money thats involved in them, we've had great managers who have left for decent money while raising the profile of the club. We've had players do the same and go for some ridiculous fees. We get more fans on average, we have a better stadium that should bring in more hospitality. We are in a nicer city with a bigger population and catchment area. We have a billionaire majority shareholder who is willing to see us right and cover a short fall.

Yet despite all this Burnley still have a significantly better youth system then us that produces players good enough for this league and above with a fair regularity. They are the team that can turn up to big games and perform. They are the team looking forward to a first month next season playing 3 champions league clubs. How the fuck is that the case? That all reeks of bad managments and financial misdemeanours.

Yet im meant to bow down at the feet of Derek and not criticise while he makes himself feel better by saying hes doing a fucking fabulous job and that we are the cunts and the reason we cant push on.

Despite the diatribe, I do believe dereks done, and continues to do a good job, Burnleys success doesnt detract that (it does however put the job hes done into context). I just want to see a change of attitude from him that I believe will go someway to helping us all have a better time supporting the team we love and may just help us push on. This article is simply a continuation of the bullshit we've heard throughout his tenure.

So it wasn't yet another dig at the fans or the small club syndrome shit we constantly hear ? Thats my take on it and I will leave it at that, i'm not saying you are right or wrong and I have tried to say as positive as I can for a long time however to have the same thing constantly rammed back at the fans makes you wonder why we bother !

.........Bob on/seconded.

So if you were chairman and a journalist had just asked you why Preston had lost out on Williamson to Sheff Utd, your answer would be...?
I would simply say that you would need to ask Williamson that as we had offered him an extremely good financial package in line with our commitment and policy to bring in players to improve the squad

Can't disagree with much of that. That said though, before last season they hadn't achieved anything in the preceding 8 seasons. They have had the luck of it all clicking in place at exactly the right time. I think we've had all the right components (manager/players/mentality/tactics etc.)at different points, our problem has been it's never all at the same time.

Has our "success" been our "failure", getting so close a few times and people tend to say "We just need a couple more players to make it" (as is being said now). Is it true though, do we need a bigger overhaul in fact in terms of players/systems/mentality? Burnley only got close once in all that time so knew they needed something drastic to make it. Coyle/the mentality/few new players all came at once and bingo.

I would give it 5 minutes after the article was published before some were on here complaining you had alluded to the fact the financial package we had offered wasn't as good as the one Sheff Utd had made.

Perhaps people would prefer it if we were fighting for players with the likes of Blackpool, Doncaster, Barnsley and Plymouth so despite signing a lesser player we could feel better about ourselves after.

It's amusing the reaction we still get on here when a football player, just like all of us, will go where the money is, just because DS said as much.

I still think that luck played its part in Burnley going up this season. To play 60+ games without losing key players to injury and suspension for vital periods with such a small squad is pretty fortunate. That's to take nothing away from their achievement as Coyle spent his money wisely, got them playing good football and install a tough mental attitude, but I think all that would have counted for nothing if players had not been injured or suspended at key moments.

Think how it might have all been different for us if Chaplow had not got injured and maintained his early season form or Davidson had been fit all season. We might not even be having this discussion if Williamson had not got suspended and missed the playoffs, meaning we had to play the ineffectual and useless Carter or Nicholson. What a difference it could have made if Mellor had not got injured and maintained the form he was in before crashing into the advert hordings against Bristol City?

All if's and buts fella.

We should be asking why we have so many players who are constantly injured or unfit 🙄

I agree with your sentiments regarding missing key players, but when was the last time Callum completed a full season?
