Ledson

Ledson

My issue with ledson is that I really can't identify something he does well. We've had some amazing midfielders at this level since promotion as well as some poor ones, but ledson is the only one I can think of that really doesn't offer a single outstanding quality.

Pearson is obvious, he was great in the tackle, could carry the ball and was an ok passer. Gally had phenomenal range, vision and accuracy. Even Welsh was a good tackler, even if he was very limited in every other regard.

Today we have Ali, who is a very good tackler both standing and when going to ground. Whiteman is just a worse gally but he can put in a decent tackle, and I can see what he offers to the team. Browne requires no introduction, he's just a very good player. A team can always have someone like that in the squad, but why does he start so often?

What does ledson do? His passing is pedestrian, his range and vision is poor, his tackling is inferior to any of the other defensive mods we've had: Whiteman, Ali and even Browne. He runs around a lot like Browne but to much less effect, and his shooting is atrocious. He's such a frustrating player who I had massive hopes for.

Now I'm getting all sentimental for that Person/Gally/Browne midfield. I pity the likes of @Silverback who never got to see it in its heyday.
I would have loved to have seen it. I'm hopeful Mads will develop into something special. I believe he has all the tools.

Ah...Ledo... what has happened?

There is a lot of OTT reactionary stuff posted about players, I see all the hyperbole about how awful Ledson, Brady, Woodman (and a few others) are, but these three seem to be the players of choice to have a pop at currently. Couple of things about Ledson - for balance.

1) When we signed Ledson, he had been a huge hit in League 1. Looked too good for the level, and we paid a hefty fee for him. Other clubs were interested but he came here. He was raw, but as a fan base we loved it when he came on the pitch as he gave us some bite. Every 50/50 drew a sharp intake of breath as he was always on the cusp of a red card. He's not a non-league player and anyone who posts this is taking things a step too far. He hasn't developed as we'd hoped he would, but how much of this is coaching and doing as he's told?
2) It's fair to say (as others have posted) that he has matured and dives in much less now than he did, but this occasionally makes him less effective. Remember the crunching tackle at Ewood last season in the first minute. Could have been a red card - instead, it arguably set the tone and won us the game. He rarely does this now - marking space, jogging back, holding the position, motioning to the forwards to get back and help. Why's that? Team instructions...
3) Passing - to me Ledson has always had the eye for an incisive pass. All too often, however, he telegraphs it and they get intercepted. Passes 'through the lines' as AN would have said. The long diagonals seemed to have stopped until recently - been out of the team and feels he has to show what he can do? At least he was trying to get us forward, unlike Whiteman who took the safe option every time on Tuesday night (and does all too often)
4) Passion - he cares, he really cares. Watch the goal celebrations. Even when he's on the bench he's the first into the celebrations, jumping on the scorer and enjoying being with the crowd.
5) He's a human being - he makes mistakes, we all do, we all get things wrong. Difference for most of us is when we're working, and we get something slightly wrong, we don't have 15,000 people telling us we're useless. Some of the stuff that has been posted about him, Brady and others, both here and on other platforms, is pretty unforgiveable in my view. I am not trying to be all saintly or anything, but please just remember that every single human being (well most) have got feelings and emotions. They don't mess things up deliberately, and don't deserve abuse for any of it. If you don't agree, please don't respond with the 'pay me 10k a week and I'll take abuse', as that's just stupid. No amount of money, 5k, 10k, 20k, 500k, can control our emotions. He's a human being - be kind to him as you'd want people to be kind to yourself. OTT criticism is counter-productive and a toxic environment never makes things better. Or as my mum would have said (and often did), 'If you can't think of something positive to say, say nothing'.
really? so you don't have an annual.appraisal at work. If I am not mistaken, these are filled with what you have done well and what you have not and what yo u are going to do to improve. Or do you tell your boss 'if you don't have anything nice to say, say nothing'. maybe it's me....... has the world gone mad?

actually, you might be on to something. we have decided to wait to hear the team before setting off. If leddo is starting, I am not going just in case I give a groan, or laugh out loud, when yet another 'pass' flies out cor a throw and Leddo blames those around him. There, does that conform to your perfect, happy world?

Yes, I have an appraisal at work and also I carry out appraisals. We have a 121 every 2 months as well as a check in. We have objectives to meet, which are carefully planned and constructed, with clear success criteria. That process is fulfilling and worthwhile. A bit different than calling a footballer a useless piece of whatever online. And if we’re reflecting on a whole year and talking about what’s not been done well, you’ve got a crap system. Appraisal is about improving performance, abusing people isn’t.

Ryan Ledson is what you get when you try to appease the utter dick on the Town End yelling "FORRRRWAAAARRRRRRDDD!!!" after our second consecutive pass. Every. Single. Bastard. Time.

FWIW I'd like to see us play a 4-2-3-1 like we did under Alex Neil so that those (currently) aimless balls in to the channel actually have a target chasing them higher up the pitch. Like when the "Rolls-Royce" Ben Davies could gain the plaudits for doing precisely the same thing punting it diagonally every time towards Barky...

Sorry but he combines two attributes,
He is slightly out of his depth at this level !
His vastly overated opinion of himself has him thinking that he is too good for this level !!
A poor combination because he deludedly blames his team mates for his cock ups, very bad for morale!!

I also did miss sitting down in January ( as a team ) and setting objectives for the year !

We call them PDRs as well. 🙂 I actually enjoy them, both as appraiser and appraisee.

This should have said “ I also DONT miss sitting down and setting objectives … “

It can be difficult being the appraiser , especially if you have to mark someone down for poor or inconsistent performance…
It can be a difficult conversation if they won’t accept it…..

That's why the regular check ins are so important - the true skill of leadership, spotting issues before they really arise and intervening to fix them before they're really broken.

If only PNE had a manager like that!

Spot on, a poor performance rating shouldn’t come as a surprise to the recipient….

As you say, there should regular informal chats going on prior to the actual rating stage…

saying 'if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing'. I can honestly say that I say nothing that Leddo can hear, ever. I would never shout abuse at any player. Give my honest appriaisal of him on here and going forward the plan would be to loan him out or sell him. If he chooses to read this, then I would be very surprised.

Lucky not to get a red card with that challenge.
There is probably a player in there somewhere??? But he does not seem to have learnt anything over the past few years, positioning -always chasing back, passing- mostly backwards and that's it...!!!!

He's as shit and lower league as Kevin Nicholls was, but our wank owners and management have allowed him to accumulate over 150 appearances for us, instead of the dozen or so Nicholls was given before being binned.

I think being a 'decent lad' automatically earns you a contract extension at this lazy, directionless, nothing club.
