There used to be a time when referees for games came from neutral parts of the country to avoid any bias. Tell me / could the EFL have chosen anyone from closer to the WBA home ground? Guess where he’s from ? Stafford shire - well done EFL -

We've had Lancashire FA referees officiate us before (Simpson, Doughty, Bond to name but three)

I wasn’t too impressed. The penalty was soft, we've had better shouts this season not given. Hull at home immediately comes to mind. At least 2 WBA players should've been booked, I can't remember now, but was pretty vocal at the time.
However, it's stating the obvious, we've had a lot worse.

The guys on Radio Lancs said he was poor and very pro WBA. One example they said, was an obvious foul before the penalty decision came. I confess to only noticing we'd kicked off early and only joined the game at 2-0 so no overall view of how things were going.

He was even very quick to dish out yellows for us but even the WBA commentators were laughing at what their team got away with with no cards. He was completely biased.

Simpson is a Man United fan. Just like any other referee, he has shit games and ok games.

The commentator on Radio Lancs was the abysmal Hunt, accompanied by Ormerod - they were even worse than normal on Saturday.

Isn't Paul Tierney from Preston? I know he mainly referees in the prem these days, I can't say I ever remember him refereeing one of our games.

We could have had one of our own coaching staff referree our last 5 games, wouldn’t have made a blind bit of difference. We have far bigger problems as a club than where the referee lives.

It's absolutely ridiculous to infer that professional a referee may be biased towards their local team. Yes referees are asked to declare their affiliation but this is only to protect them from accusations such as this.

No one would ever demand that a player declares their affiliation and shouldn't be able to play against their home town.

I think that we all have unconscious biases, and in an attempt to overcome this, often over compensate. I’ve been guilty of that while umpiring cricket games involving players that I have coached. I do feel that on borderline decisions, I have probably given benefit of the doubt to opponents more than to my team.

Possibly because he's not a PNE fan but lives relatively close where there are a good few, he (as someone else said) goes out of his way, to seem neutral and steers too much the other way.
