Man of the Match

Man of the Match

If it was Man Of the Last 20 minutes then yeah it'd be McCann, but he was shite for the previous 70, including missing an absolute sitter. Had we not scored he was about to be hooked for Devine. Tbf to him, very much not his game today, everything was aerial so he wasnt able to break up play as much.

Not sure he deserved Man of the match, but would like to give credit to Andy Hughes. Never gets a mention really, but he's been every bit as good as Storey so far this season, without the intermittent shit games too. If that cross finds literally anyone else in our squad he'd have had a quality assist to his name.

Gibson my MotM, struggled at times with the wind, but recovered well and he brings a sense of calm and composure that really helps those around him. The ball over the top for the second was perfectly timed and weighted. Another clean sheet for him

Fully agree about Hughes. I was vocally critical of his contract renewal last season, but he's made me eat my words.

I'm very confident that a backline of Storey/Gibson/Hughes would've seen us come away with three points at Hull, had he been available.

McCann became a man possessed after we opening the scoring. Seeing Devine getting ready must of changed him. He became relentless in everything he did. Before we scored I thought he was the poorest player for us, by the end of the 90, he was one of best on the pitch.

Gibson carries the ball forward so well, not seen that from one of our CB’s since St Ledger. Davies did it a bit too I suppose.

We need to find an alternative solution to when Vukcevic has to go off, Lindsay coming on and shifting Gibson to the outside isn’t it. Grabbing hold of the attacker’s shirt and giving away needless free kicks and losing the bloke you’re marking presumably isn’t in the defending handbook.

Hopefully Vukcevic will soon get used to the intensity, he’s not played 90 minutes at this level very often recently, if ever.

Agree. Changing your centre backs is a risky business. I’m not sure why he didn’t move Small across and bring Offiah on the right

They'd just brought on a 6ft6 tank in Miles Leaburn and wanted to match him up. Leaburn didn't get a sniff.

Could it be that Leaburn is six feet six? Makes sense to me. Horses for courses.
Yeah, that was exactly the reason, but it can cause issues when Lyndsay gets dragged out wide, as happened over at the left back position. However, it worked.

Perhaps Lindsay isn't being 'dragged' out wide, could it be, he's been told to stick to Leaburn, leaving Hughes and Gibson to cover the box?

Perhaps. Perhaps he’s also been instructed to pull the guy down and give away a free kick.

Just one thing, that I have put in one other post - the missed header was a good chance but far from a sitter imo.
If the cross had been delivered straight onto his head, then yeah, a sitter. But getting power or direction on a header is difficult when a cross bounces up from the turf a few yards in front of you.

I'd be pissed off if he did that earlier but as a late foul to disrupt the attack and reset for the free kick I'm not averse to it. It's something I'm sure Heckingbottom will be thinking about as he's less effective when he's drawn out wide

The first thing is to hit the target, which he did. It was a clean connection that deserved a goal, but hey ho, Small's goal had more than a touch of luck.

I think the main takeaway from yesterday is that up to half the team could have been man of the match, and the others could have been in the running on a bad day.

It's a far cry from previous seasons where there's been an obvious candidate or if we lost Lindsay.
