An interesting read;

In particular the final paragraphs: (my highlighting)

The summer arrivals of Craig Bellamy and Dirk Kuyt pushed Mellor into fifth – possibly sixth if you factor in Luis Garcia – place among Liverpool’s strikers. Not a good situation for a 23 year old needy of regular football to progress. And whilst he might have not been exactly looking for a move, it was probably the best solution.

As will be playing in the Championship, even if the player himself might feel that he is ready to play in the Premiership. At Preston he is joining an ambitious club that is slowly building a reputation for attractive football and a squad full of youthful talent. If he has truly recovered from the injuries that have kept him out for the majority of the past two seasons, he should easily prove that he can score goals at this level.

How Mellor, who remains an avid Liverpool fan, will get on with staunch Evertonion Dave Nugent will be crucial. Both are instinctive strikers and, if they hit it off, Preston should have one of the best forward lines in the division. The worrying alternative is that they prove to be too similar to each other which would probably indicate that Simpson bought Mellor in anticipation of Nugent’s departure.

Re: mellor article

Mellor and Nugent are probably quite similar, bubbly characters and young men. But as footballers and forwards, they are definitely not very similar players.

I don't think it's a bad thing at all, if both two strikers are instinctive: have an eye for goal. 😎 Furthermore, Mellor has proved in a Liverpool shirt that he is a very good team player - in that respect better than Nugent, I reckon.

Re: mellor article

I personally think Mellor culd be the buy of the decade (well up there with nugent)...thats ff he does come good.

He is a proven goalscorer in the Prem, if he can get some good service to him. I'm sure he'll be knocking them in for fun.

Add in that bit of class from nugent, and we have a remarkable front line, that no one will want to defend against.

Seriously, going forward we have arguably, the best line up now outside the Prem.

Re: mellor article

If Mellor and Nugent click, we DO have the best pair of strikers in this division, possibly only matched by a combination of Forssell, Bendtner and Jerome at Birmingham.

However, both are rather prone to injury, so a returning Brett Ormerod will be VITAL to our success this year. He's a good workhorse and will help get the 2 more lethal strikers the service they need to fire us up th league.

Not to mention Whalley and Nowland who will get their fair share this season!

Forssell is class but he has a couple of inury nightmare seasons behind him, and was disappointed not to find a new club last week - he had negotiatons with at least HSV (Hamburg) and Blackburn. He's currently down in the pecking order in the Finnish national team: after the "One and Only" Jari Litmanen (who plays as a 2nd striker in 4-4-1-1 formation), Jonathan Johansson, Alexei Eremenko jr - and Shefki Kuqi. 😱

Mikael Forssell is not happy to sit on the Birmingham bench, but I guess he has to endure that quite a bit - until he moves to a new club in January.

Re: mellor article

I'm certainly happier with the purchase of Mellor than if we'd got an expensive journeyman like Horsfield or Dobie.
Just a thought about our recent best buy...Jon Macken, promising youngster bought for only £250,000. He fired us to promotion and then we got rid when his ego got too big. £5,000,000 in the bank, thank you Mr.Keegan and what's more Macken has played less than 50 games since.

I'd be interested if anyone knows just how much we did bank from thee macken deal - he certainly did not hit many "appearances" targets. So i suspect the top line was less than the £5M headline number and we paid 25% of the profit to Manure.

Minus a million to Man Ure too.
