I see that a couple of relatively high profile posters have changed their usernames recently. Maybe there are more that I haven’t spotted.

I had understood that in the past this wasn’t possible - at least not without admin help, but I am presuming that these posters have done it themselves and that this is a feature of the new software introduced last year??

I see that the name change is applied to all their historical posts - but it is NOT applied where their posts have been quoted within other people‘s posts. This is a way of being certain who has changed their name to what - as they are clearly identifiable.

I am not sure I like this feature. Not least as I see potential for mischief. Any comments? And could the feature be disabled, even if there is a consensus that we’d like it to be?
 
I commented on one of the posters name changes and, in fairness, completely agree with his reasonings behind it.

Not sure about NorthWesterns to Guest though 💩

But no, I didn't do it myself. I went through one of the admins and it has to be approved by all of them I think.
 
I am absolutely not against the idea that people should be able to change usernames. But I don’t like the idea that people can change it themselves - for fun, for devilment or whatever - and I am assuming that’s now piss easy to do in user setting?

I like the idea that we try to have some consistency- some feeling that we know who we’re talking to. Like the mods/admin go to some trouble to try to prevent alter egos. So a system where you make a request for a name change just feels sensible.

As I edited in to my post, that's not how I did it. Can't speak for the other poster though.

Only the Mod Team can change a User Name.

We very rarely grant it (see Marsbars) unless it is an extreme example (see Korol).

Hope this clears things up for you.
 
.has to be done through the moderation/admin teams and is done on a case by case basis.

Depending on the reason for the request it will be accepted or declined.
 
OK - Great. Thanks for clearing that up. With name-changes being a rarity- then seeing two so close together, I put two-and-two together and made five.

Not sure I’d have approved the name Guest. though! Not least because Guest (no full stop) has a very particular status on this forum.

There is a different reason behind that one altogether nit I wouldn't worry about it causing any confusion

The thought had crossed my mind too....that said all my alternatives were offensive which I know isn't allowed!
