I remember Derek Mayer coming from Everton played in the 57/58 runners up team.

That is a bit before my time as a supporter though obviously he did make a major contribution. Most of the other players mentioned after my initial post - thanks for the replies everybody - didn't make much of an impression at the time as I recall though did we actually get McGeady from Everton in which case he is an exception. The player we signed from Everton I recall most vividly for less than the best reasons is Ray Veall. I have mentioned him here before - he was a left winger who literally could not run in a straight line when he had the ball. Instead he constantly zigzagged in and out as he moved forward so that if you had put some white paint on the soles of his boots he would have left a saw edge line all the way along the inside of the actual touchline - as I recall he lasted about half a season. Heaven knows how this board would react if we signed someone like that today.

As i read this mornings ramblings on here rough in bed, I can't help but think, what is Ford united gk up to these days ???? ( you had to be there, what a guy)
With it being FA Cup week I was discussing him last week with someone. Most un- goalie shaped keeper I can recall, lapped up the chants of ’who ate all the pies?’ Then left with his place in folklore guaranteed and a lap of honour… that’s when the FA cup meant something.

We won 3-0 as I recall….

I remember back in the 80’s we played a team called Shepshed Charterhouse , I wonder if they are still going ?

Yep, he was club chairman too…

He was. You don't get ties like that anymore. Great day, Julian Darby pulling the strings.

Then they all came back on the triumphant last day of the season.

Just typing this has made me miss when it was fun being a PNE fan.

Yes they hit the skids in the early nineties after Martin O Neill left for bigger and better things and reformed as Shepshed Dynamo

I was living in Nottingham at the time and remember driving up and back to the game… the giant killing preview on the radio, the game where to be fair to them they were courageous and made it difficult. I’m sure David Lucas pulled off a few decent saves that game and their keeper pulled of a worldie to deny Jason Harris, the old town end chanting there’s only one Ford United as the they did a lap of honour afterwards. Must have been a good game as I remember it quite well.

Couldn’t happen these days sadly, aside from a team so low down struggling to make it, there would be next to nobody on at the end game and with a 3-0 lead.

Great story on Shepshed . Preston’s Invincibles even get in there ..as well as a link to a story about matches between Leicester and PNE .. didn’t know that Finney played on in a cup tie against Lewith a broken jaw ..

Sadly Shepshed are gone
