Good carefree times. What a season.

Tony Cunningham was such an aggressive forward, I think a very young Alan Kelly would have learnt a lot that day. I do remember he got overly aggressive a couple of years later at Bloomfield and got himself sent off and he arguably could have done at Newcastle.

Newcastle was another of those away grounds with pens behind the goal. The overcrowding seemed ok at the time but looking back …..

Great following of over 5,000, fantastic North End support, especially after the previous nightmare of a season.
The promotion winning season was brilliant and that Cup run, went all over the Country and to all the FA Cup games.
Unbelievable North End support throughout the season and always travelled in good numbers to all the away games.👍😀

Me too, my favourite season of all time. It’s probably as much to with my age (I was 17 or 18) but what McGrath did that season defied belief.

Yeah probably an age thing and also what was achieved after the previous season and having to apply for re-election.
Was a fantastic season to be a North End fan, huge support home and away and some incredible games.
The win at home on a Friday night against Northampton with a crowd of nearly 16,500 and the old Deepdale bouncing like it hadn't done for many years.😀

Great season for certain after the debacle of the previous reelection season. Was our second highest points total in the 3 points for a win era.
Big turnaround.

i was up in the stands in our seating area and it can tell you it looked more than 5000 in those pens.
It certainly felt like there was more than 5000 in the section behind the goal,I was quite central and I think those areas filled very quickly.
Not sure how many tickets we had for the seats, I know that previously I've heard mention that the total following was nearer 7000?

I was in the middle pen behind the goals.

You can see the crowd surging down the terraces when there was a near miss.

Par for the course in those less-regulated days and all part of the fun of going on games.

But, of course, a tragedy waiting to happen. 🙁

Sadly didn't go to either of the North Eastern cup games, I used to play (poorly) local football in those days. I did however go to Ewood for the Chorley game, must have been a blank Saturday, and the replay.
Ironically for the Boro game, our match was postponed and it was too late to make alternative arrangements. Some of my mates went and due to the local 'hospitality' hadn't enjoyed themselves, despite Ronnie's rocket.
Like all the previous posts have said, a great time to be a PNE fan.
RIP John McGrath. Thanks for the happy memories.

The Chorley game played at Ewood was our neighbours biggest attendance of the season. The goal by Ronnie Hildersley made it a fantastic day at Middlesbrough, well until the walk back to your transport after the game.🥴
