Watching the penalty shoutout last night got me thinking.. why are some keepers better than others at saving penalties?
Pickford is obviously given bucketloads of data for England about where individual players have historically put the majority of their penalties.
It’s very rare for a player not to have a favoured side - even top drawer players like Harry Kane - so just how much data is freddie given at PNE?
Generally speaking, it seems the vast majority of penalties go to the keepers right, yet if anything they tend to dive to their left most of the time.
Watching the Everton v Southampton shoutout last night, out of the 12 penalties taken, 10 went to the keepers right… yet only ONCE did a keeper dive that way.
If in doubt the keeper should always dive to the side of the standing foot of the penalty taker. That will increase the odds of them making a save.
Last night, out of the 17 pens woodman faced against Fulham, 11 went to his right. He went that way correctly 6 times. Not too bad to be fair, but I still think it could be better.
I really do hope PNE do substantial research on this. Penalty saving is not all down to luck. You can make your own luck through research, narrowing the odds, and practice 🍀

Is there much data available on where their reserve goalkeeper usually puts his penalties?

If there is data, use it and dive where they have put most of their other penalties.
If there is no data, dive to the side of his standing foot to increase the chances of going the right way.
It won’t work every time in every situation of course, but it will improve the odds of making a save. And it all comes down to fine margins at the end of the day..

There is a big difference between usual penalties in league games where teams have one or two usual first team takers and a penalty shootout against a team that is playing eleven seconds string players. Teams would have to have information on something like forty players which is virtually impossible.

Yep, I'd be very surprised if there's a dossier of information on where Liam Lindsay likes to put his penalties!

Let's be honest, most of the penalties in the shootout were just absolutely belted towards goal. Keepers had no chance with lots of them and, frankly, looked tired by the end. 😂

Exactly what I was thinking. That would have been the first time many of them would have ever taken a penalty in a game. Normally on the international stage many of the pen takers would have gone before.

The rule of sticking the keeper on the line and monitoring it has certainly hindered them.

Also the pens were struck so confidently. Probably minimal pressure infront of pretty much an empty stand.

The penalty marathon on Tuesday will give all our opponents GK coaches a dossier on where our penaĺty takers prefer to aim for. Same for Fulham of course.
Still buzzing

Still plenty who wernt on the pitch who could take one.
Riis, Bowler, Potts, Brady.........

I have always thought the secret to saving penalties is for a keeper to wait to see which way the ball is going before diving. Then if it is close enough or straight at him so that he doesn't have to dive at all he should have a good chance of saving it. It would mean that in order to score the penalty taker would either have to hit it so hard or so closely just inside the post that the keeper had no chance even if he guessed right. In fairness one of their players hit one of the first kind in the shootout on Tuesday where he didn't even take a run up while Greenwood's first penalty was of the second sort. Something that annoys me is if a keeper dives out of the way of a penalty that he could have just caught with no effort if he stood still - well maybe not if we are taking it but you know what I mean.

Didn’t the second penalty takers change the direction of their kick to the opposite side of the goal .

We all now know where Sam Greenwood will aim for.

Problem is trying to save them, the lad is deadly accurate from 12 yards.

3/3.

I did wonder how big Freddie's water bottle would have to be

Something this size

But really (I know of no club doing this, just hypothetical) there is nothing stopping a club putting someone in the stands telling the Keeper or player which way to go or using the Digital Advertising. Not saying this has happened or will. but there is always a potential.

I guess what was unusual was how difficult to save were the penalties from some players who may not have ever taken a penalty before in a competitive game.

Even though there wasn’t a big crowd adding to the pressure, I’m sure none of them would have wanted to be the one responsible for their team getting knocked out of the competition.

For a right footer a goalkeeper should dive right, for a left footer dive left. You would go the right way on about 70% of Pens.

For a second penalty, stand still

Ive often thought also about freaking the taker out and, for a right footer , put yourself a step or 2 nearer to that right hand post, but then dive left. The taker may decide to go for the bigger side but because it is not their natural one they are less likely to get to teh corner and you could well stop it near the middle

For quite a lot of the penalties, the taker sent ME the wrong way! I found myself thinking the keeper was diving the right way, only for the ball to end up in the other side of the net from where I was looking.
