Obviously the taker normally adjust and just roll it the other way. Maybe the odds would shift a little.

Do keepers save more in the here and now than prior to the digital age ?
For now I’m sticking with instinct is king and too much info can overload

If the taker has to decide in a split second whether to change his mind or not (and then take a completely different penalty), he is far more likely to miss. Far more likely.

Penalty taking has moved on. Penalty saving has moved on. Whoever doesn’t move with the times loses. It’s like saying back in the day we didn’t do any proper training and went out and got pissed and had a kebab the night before a game. Just because what you did or didn’t do light years ago was successful then (or when everyone else had the same approach) doesn’t mean you could do it like that today when everyone else is super fit, and get away with it. Times change. We now have the technology and we have the analysts.? So we should use them!!!
And we do. And is it of benefit on this specific instance ? Again, that’s a question. I would genuinely like to

Not really sure how this would be of any relevance. Penalty taking has improved and penalty saving has improved.
But if you were to do what you suggest (ie put a goalie from a bygone era) in goal against a striker from modern times, my money would be on the player with all the analysis and research at his disposal.

It must be hard for keepers to judge these days because of slow, short and straight line run ups favoured by penalty takers. In the old days, you could bet a fast, curved run up would be followed by a shot to the side of the taker's standing foot.

The topic is statistics that may benefit a keeper today vs natural instinct
I am suggesting too much data and intervention may stifle and could even confuse
eg. Keeper is told that he or she tends to go down the right and low, so before the kick is taken they already have a premeditated decision rather than watching the player and certain signs in the moment

But the takers are so good at disguising which way they will put it! That’s my whole point as to why you need to rely on their previous kicks rather than their run up etc
Doesn't matter what data you study. If you strike the last 3 like Greenwood has, nobody is saving them. The old Warren Joyce penalty.

Every well taken penalty (hit with venom bottom bag up to postage stamp) should result in a goal.
Or, a goalkeeper in those circumstances is on a hiding to nothing. On toes, ready to react etc is irrelevant. As you say, in those circumstances, stats are irrelevant. (Paraphrased.)
Take for example Mr Shearer who you refer to, our own Alexander, Touré, Le Tissier etc, etc. Kicker decides & executes.
As “proof of the pudding,” as it were, see PNE v Fulham.
Two prime examples of poor penalties in that game & one committing the penalty takers cardinal sin, not hitting the target.
Why are some penalties saved? Usually a badly taken penalty, a ‘keeper responding to cues in the run up, research pre-match or simple good luck. Or option “D,” all of the above.
‘Keepers tend to have their own way of dealing with matters in a penalty situation. As with all in life, one of the most important factors in the ‘keeper’s armoury, I’d suggest, is experience.
Raya just made a good penalty save for Arsenal with a save from the rebound that was even better. The first save to his right the second to his left. Great reflexes.

Any penalty not scored is a poor penalty. End of story.
Some bad penalties result in goals, no good penalties result in saves.
More interesting to me is the psychology of it. Favourite example is Holland subbing their keeper in the last minute of extra time. The sub (Tim Krul from memory) had no significantly good record against penalties but maybe that extra doubt made the difference? “They brought this keeper on, he must be good”.
The other one is the keeper who had no information but kept consulting a blank bit of paper.
There was also some interesting stuff about how England approach shootouts now psychologically to try and boil it down to technique and control the outside pressures.
Really interesting stuff if you’re that way inclined.
I suppose there’s always the Sean Gregan approach of just making sure you put your foot through it!

Picture the scene, England losing 2-1 in a world cup game against Russia. We get awarded a penalty late in the game. Yashin is known to research penalty takers so Finney decides to take it with his right foot. This is something Yashin would not expect because he would assume as Finney was left footed he would take it with that foot.
When questioned about it later, Finney explained that although he still put it in the same place as he usually did but, using the right foot just gave him the split second of doubt in Yashin's mind he needed and yes, indeed he did score to level the scores up.
Just another piece of evidence that he was the greatest of his period.
