Perspective

25pts after 15 games last season would have seen us just 2pts behind 1st place.

Burnley and Sheff Utd had 26pts and 25pts respectively after 15 games.

Just puts into perspective that we really are doing well this season.

The recent poor run was tough to take after such an incredible start, but just perhaps we should cut the manager (and players) some slack and give them more credit than criticism.

We are 6th, just 3pts behind Leeds in 3rd, in what is a fiercely competitive league this season. It's a remarkable achievement so far.

Considering the size of our budget and depth/quality of our squad, we ARE over achieving (like it or not) and we should be proud.

We all want more, and that's a good thing, but let's also be grateful for what we've got.

Lets keep it going! Up the whites!!
GREAT POST.....

We have the 4th lowest budget in the division and yet are top 6....... that is a sign of remarkable team work.....

keep trying to be positive.......

I.H.E.

Obviously we'd all take 6th place at the end of the season. We haven't played everyone yet and there's a long way to go.
I still think our league position is falsely high due to that great run we had. The question is, can we do it again to maintain that position?
Equally, I could respond my saying our position is false because of the poor run we've just come out of.

What is undisputable is that after a 3rd of the season and since late August (bar last week), we have been a Top 6 Team this season. That is a fact, the table doesn't lie.

I'll give some leeway to those who'll scoff and I'll suggest that Game 23 is a fair marker which neither side (For / Against Ryan) can argue with.

Remember that the teams around us have to play each other as well so if we just concentrate on picking as many points up as poss then thats all we can do.

It would be quite interesting to re-read the Season Prediction Thread.

I was one of the more optimistic ones suggesting that we'd finish 10th.

The majority predicted lower placings.

Based upon this, commonsense suggests that 6th actually isn't all that bad and I'll happily take 6th at the seasons end now.

Well Done to Ryan, his staff and the players.
As you know JD , I am very optimistic when it come to North End, but I think that even I put 12th-15th

The buffer we built up early on has already been eroded. After the first 8 games continuing in a "business as usual" way (i.e. circa 1.4 points per game) would probably have been enough for the playoffs. As it stands now we need to continue at something close to (wait for it!) playoff form to make the playoffs (more like 1.6 points a game).

If Lowe can quickly find the self-assurance to play with confidence on the front foot more often than not then it might be possible. The way we approached the Southampton and Coventry games give a little bit of room for optimism but I can quite easily see the season drifting away to our usual 10-15th spot unfortunately.

With respect, your post is absolute nonsense.

You have an interesting but unsurprising view on things and an unusual interpretation of mediocre/unambitious.

Of course it's an achievement to be where we are in the league right now, both points and positions wise (6th and just 3pts off 3rd). And it's an improvement of 6pts on last seasons position after the same number of games.

That's something we have achieved, or is it in my imagination?

This season so far has been anything but mediocre, whichever way you look at it. Up to now it has been remarkable.

This is something to be proud of and happy about. Credit goes to the club & manager for over achieving (currently), especially in the context of other clubs with much bigger budgets and larger fan bases.

To describe this as accepting mediocrity and being unambitious is...well...really odd frankly.

Also interesting how you claim our league position only matters at the end of the season. Fans look at the league table all the time - it's a barometer of success that indicates how well a team and manager are doing.

If it only matters at the end of the season, then we should all ignore our league position until then.

Let's not get excited after a win, or excited at how close we are to promotion. Don't get upset after a defeat, or depressed if we're close to relegation. Let's all keep quiet until the end of the season.
Why is what I posted a nonsense? I’m a realist not in cloud cuckoo land getting all excited at being 6th when not even halfway through the season and crying “remarkable achievement“ dear me. 60 odd years of going absolutely nowhere tells you we have achieved nothing and yet you want us to get all self satisfied and bragging at being in 6th place after 15 of 46 games, dear me I bloody despair how satisfied with mediocrity you are.

I have said we are doing well so far but I stand by every word I said, the only nonsense being spoken is from you, we are 6th after 15 game and doing quite well but it’s hardly a remarkable achievement. People looking at the table will all admit the only table that matters is the one showing positions after 46 games. It’s how I see it, we have done well but achieved absolutely nothing, zilch, nada up to now. People look at the table all the time as you say, so after one game if your team are top that’s an achievement? Get a grip eh.

oh and as for your last paragraph I never suggested any such thing.

When we have done a Luton you can make claims like these but we haven’t yet have we. I hope we do but sorry I see no remarkable achievements until then.

No one has said it’s bad, in fact the reverse but it’s far from remarkable or an achievement yet imo.

Hello everyone, never posted on here before 👍
Anyhow, yes we've got off to a good start barring the mess in between. Let's just say I'm between the 30-40 range and I believe this is the best squad we've had since the Mckenna/Nugent days. Our defence is a bit worrying though. That is our weak point there's no doubt about it. Hopefully Ramsay will come in and be class. We will see.
Let's be honest, we're never going to be competing with Leicester this season with their squad. A better showing at Ipswich would have been nice though. We should have beat saints and let's face it, we should have had a stone wall penalty against Hull (albeit we were shite).
I think we have a better squad than everyone believes. Normally everyone is talking up bang average players. This season is the opposite.

If we had two quality defenders (Cb and LWB) I really do believe we'd easily be top 4. More like 3rd/4th.
I think this season we will be between 5th and 10th to be honest with you.

This I agree with. Although we are still a couple of players short of matching the Billy Davies era. We have some darn good players though.

No I wasn’t Ando, but will be back for the next game hopefully. See you then🙂.
I missed the Millwall and Soton games due to being away on holiday, so despite having a bad back I struggled to the game on Saturday….

I was walking like a 90 year man….

Hopefully, I will be fighting fit for the Cardiff game on the 25th….

I'd say it's our best squad since when we missed out on the play-offs with Alex Neil personally, but with 2 or 3 additions to the defence and with the new guys getting more experience under their belt, I think we'll be stronger than back then. Assuming we tie down Woodman, Browne and Whiteman too.

The likes of Pearson, Davies, Fisher, Gallagher, Robinson, Cunningham Mk I, and a prime DJ still walk into this team, Barkhuizen was really good in that period too.

Next season could be a more realistic target for a promotion campaign.

The plan should be to bring in a RB, RCB, LCB, and LB over the next two windows, with Storey and Lindsay dropping to backup, Ramsay going back, and Cunningham and Bauer moving on.

That bag of toss, Paul Simpson had our best squad in my lifetime, and he wasted it.

Psst. The table doesn't lie at the end of the season. It lies all the time before that, if you're looking for how good a specific team is. Cause the teams haven't all played against the same opposition.

It literally gets more accurate with every game that is played.

I just don’t understand how people make such outlandish claims. If we have gained a remarkable achievement for being 6th after 15 games does it then follow that after being top for several weeks before falling to 8th there was a remarkable capitulation in not winning any of our next 7 games, was that a remarkable team effort too? Cant have it both ways. As I said we are doing quite well but, as yet, no remarkable achievements that really is a nonsense.

Joan you're hilarious. 🤣 I would suggest, politely, that it's you who needs to 'get a grip' if you think this season has so far been mediocre and unambitious. I can only assume you were one of those who wouldn't allow themselves to enjoy it when we were top of the league.

I'm talking about PNE and THIS season, not Luton last season. But since you mention Luton, yes what Luton achieved was absolutely remarkable, and an anomaly in modern day football.

What PNE have achieved so far this season is remarkable, a description that seems to upset you. If you believe that enjoying our start to this season and being delighted with our current league position is accepting mediocrity, or being unambitious, then you're utterly clueless. Or you're on a wind-up.

Regarding the last paragraph of my previous post, you said our league position "only means something at the end of 46 games", thereby inferring that current league position doesn't matter.

So why do you appear to be upset that mediocre and unambitious Preston are 'only' 6th in the league, if our current league position is meaningless? And why are some folk calling for the manager to be sacked?

Have to congratulate you though on your sense of fairness, by giving the club and Ryan Lowe the full season before you judge whether we've been successful, fulfilled any ambitions, or achieved anything remarkable.

You won't be looking at the league table until May, when you can see our final league position, so I won't expect to see any comment from you until then, good or bad.

" Football, 'Bloody Hell' " (Ferguson quote)

Seriously, I don't think Joan was saying " Don't be too passionate " at all.
Some fans might be just getting their breath back after being so-long at the dizzying heights for so long, so early . A bit bizarre, wasn't it ?
